Are you sure there are actually stones there? looks like they are faux stones to me (gold made to look like stones).
Perhaps the gold "stones" are shinier than the rest of the gold in the setting because the "stones" are sort of embedded below
the surface of the rest of the setting. Could this be a possibility?

Edit - can you get an upclose photo straight down on the stones?
