Favorite:
Assher (number one all time fave - it was love/lust/obsession at first sight)
Emerald
Baguette (any type)

New Favorites:
Marquise
Pear
Half Moons

Likes:
Cushion
Radiant
Princess

Not so sure about:
Rounds
Trilliants as a center stone
Hearts

But I''m sure I could learn to love just about any shape.

These are what I like for me. I have seen many rounds on PS that are gorgeous on the ladies who own them. But on me - meh.

Why does everyone dislike Princess cuts? I
I don''t like the harsh square shape, corners, the prongs normally used to set them (bulky to me), faceting pattern, and small face up due to depth.
Ditto. I also don''t like how pervasive they became, so quickly. HOWEVER ... I do have a cross pendant with teensy tiny channel set princesses & they work very well for that purpose - as the tables are so large that they form almost a liquid ribbon of diamonds. And that small the faceting pattern isn''t as prominent - it''s just random sparkle. For that reason they didn''t make MY "dislike" list.

my favorite cut is that of the royal asscher. i currently have a more generic square emerald but hope to one day upgrade to a royal asscher, it's such a mesmerizing cut! my least favorite has to be the trilliant....it may stem from trauma caused by math in high school or something but triangles just don't do it for me!

I love marquises, too! I think they look sooo elegant, though I might agree that not everyone can pull them off.
Hmm... for me, I honestly like every shape, but I don''t think I''d want a princess, heart, or trillion for an ering. In other jewelry (esp. earrings), sure!
My favorites are probably rounds, OEC/OMC''s, classic emerald cuts, and of course, pears.
2.gif

I love marquise diamonds too (see avatar
31.gif
). I also like them set N/S with baguettes on the side. So, so classic. My other favorite is the EC, another timeless classic.

My least favorites are the princess and radiant. Just don't like the crushed look. I also don't like heart shaped diamonds, which seem too cutsey to me.

Wow, princess cuts are really taking a beating
15.gif

My favorites:

Princess cuts
Emerald cuts
Asschers
Radiants (but more rectangular)
Cushions
Tiffany Lucida

Would happily take if given:

Rounds
a fatty pear
Ovals

Least fav:

Hearts
Marquis (unless it's a fattier marquis and in the right setting)
Trillons

I like the round brilliant, followed closely by the PEAR, then EMERALD cut (these two cuts always look so majestic, royal, and classy, in a simple mounting). I would never wear a Princess cut diamond or Heart shape diamond.

My Favs
Round Brilliants
Glacier
Cushions
Lucida
Radiants (most I have seen IRL look too busy though that I don''t like)
Asschers
Hearts (they look so romantic but yet again IRL yet too see a beauty)
Ovals
Half moons (for sidestones)
Emeralds

Least Favs:
Baguette
Pears (though I saw a pear shaped ruby in a halo that was really nice so i''m fence sitting on this one)
Marquise - Not for me
Trillons (possibly for sidestones again not my thing)
Princess Cuts - While beautiful diamonds just not my thing
Shields

In saying that though I have seen PS''s rings that may not feature my favourite center stone but they still look AMAZING

Great thread! My favorite shape is the Marquise because, to me, it''s the most elegant shape and it makes my fingers look longer and thinner. My next favorite shape is a tie between the Radiant and the Royal Asscher because they are full of fire and life. My least favorite is something called a Crisscut because none of the ones I have seen have any fire or life.

I love emeralds, asschers, ovals and cushions. Rounds I am luke warm on for an ering, but of course love them for other things. Least favorites are pears and marquise, again for erings, but I do love them in other pieces. Just depends how they are arrayed. And I really do not love radiants, too busy.

Side stones I love traps, shields, bullets, kites and half moons...

My favourite, no surprise, is a Tiffany Lucida and has been since I saw one on the internet four years ago. I also love RB''s, although they were just not for me.

I dislike the most Marquise and also heart-shaped.

All others, I wouldn''t turn down but I wouldn''t pick one myself.

I love all cuts.

I have seen a pretty heart pendant. I love the marquise east/west. My aunt was the first person I ever knew to have a radiant and I thought it was pretty cool! I love your radiant Sharon! I didn't love trillions but my hubby picked them so I love them tons!

My favorites are all cuts but it is so much fun to see an oec, omc, transitional cut. I am a huge sucker for antiques
30.gif

I like all cuts, as long as they are well cut and beautiful looking. I would choose a well cut marquise over a bleh round cut anytime..

Neat thread

FAVORITES:
Antique cushions
OEC
very flat cut stones like pears and rounds (they are so stunning but rare!)
Royal Asscher
Square Emeralds
Emerald Cuts
Rose Cuts
Briolettes
Ovals
Brilliant modern cushions
Pears
Marquise (if set within a good design)
Lucida (but HATE the setting)

So So:
Rounds (60/60 cuts)
Legacy cut (LOVE the setting) If i could put the Lucida in a legacy setting...ahhhhh)
30.gif

(basically any sidestones that are necessary to e-rings)
Lilly cut
half moons
trapezoids
Baguettes
LEAST FAVORITE:
Princess (this one I can''t deal with in any design setting)
Heart (Only one have I ever liked, and it was a ruby in a pendant necklace of 15ct+)
Super Ideal rounds (they are too overdone)

Although it depends on each stone''s cut, these are all fairly general. Intersting to see the princess is fading from popularity though just as Tiffany STARTS selling them...

I tend to like squarish stones.

Favorites -
Cushion with 1:1 l/w (this is what my engagement ring would probably be if I were choosing now)
Princess (this is what my engagement ring is; it was sooo distinctive when I got it
2.gif
- I still love it though)
Not-too-rectangular radiant

Also nice:
Round
Not-too-skinny emerald
Asscher
Marquise set e/w
Rose
OEC
OMC
Baguette

Okay:
Pear
Oval
Very rectangular cushion or radiant

Yuck:
Heart
Trilliant

Hey Nicrez,

Again it''s something that would likely terrorize the majority of IDEAL CUT posters on PS.

Simply, it''s a round stone faceted with a depth of 30-40%, where the crown was the same as a regular cut. It''s best set in a bezel and left open from behind. Many confuse them for rose cuts, but they are too faceted to be rose. I have seen a few pieces like this, one was a set of earrings that dangled and had a perfect demure sort of sparkle, and another was a diamond collar necklace repro that had something like a rose cut, but looking closer they were very flat rounds, and pears. I have no pictures, but again their rarity is what make that a hard thing to show... They are just stunning. I am a fan of diamond cuts that are unique and special, because in the end every diamond should be. The fact that so many are no different than one just around the corner is what makes something less valuable to me, regardless of trends.

I always like to go cross-current
11.gif
, and flat diamonds to me are the quintessence of demure elegance. It''s like sparkling enough to give a glow, but not enough to take out a cornea offensively.
31.gif

Are these the type of flat cuts used by folks like JAR?

I love:

~Asscher
~Emerald
~Round Brillant
~Tiffany Lucidia
~Fat Pears

I like:

~Oval
~Half Moon (as sidestones)
~Princess
~Fat Marquise

I don''t like:

~Heart
~Trillion (except as sidestones)

My e-ring is a marquise and I love it -- it is perfect for my hand. Mine is set in a very sleek 2.8 mm platinum solitaire, so I don't think it looks like it's from the 80's. Almost everyone I know IRL has an RB or princess, so my ring is unique. I have long slender (size 4.5) fingers, so I look better with an elongated stone (I need north-south finger coverage). I tried on RBs and squares, but they just didn't look right on my hand.

I adore Asschers, but they have to be at least 3 carats to look good on my finger, and that was more than we wanted to spend. (I am hoping for an Asscher cut Montana sapphire or aqua in an Art Deco style setting some day). I also really like cushions (square or oval) and ovals. I love emerald cut colored stones.

I do love the perfection of super ideal RBs, and plan to eventually buy a few for pendants and stud earrings.

I do not care for pears as the center stone of a ring (too asymmetrical for me), but think they look fab as sidestones, or as "teardrop" pendants or earrings.

Hearts are way too cutesy for me, even as sidestones.

ETA: I don't like Marquises to be too skinny. 1.8 - 2.0 L/W ratio is perfect for me. (Mine is 1.87.)

Fun topic!
My personal favorites:
Round Brillant
Pears (but HAS to be CHUBBY. Also really oohing and aaahing over pear side stones with RB center......hmmmmmm, future project????)
Cushion (if square-ish and very pillow-ish)
OEC and the other old super-chunky cuts
On the fence:
Oval
Princess (my original ering was a Princess and I do miss it sometimes but the shape and facet pattern just don''t do it for me so much anymore)
Emerald & Asscher (don''t get me wrong, they can both be gorgeous, but I just like sparkle more than that elegant glow of these cuts)

Dislike:
Radiants (especially rectangular ones...)
Marquis (...yeah, yeah, I know, I like pears but not marquis, I''m weird I guess)
Trillant
Heart

Obviously, I am a die-hard RB fan (favoring, of course, super ideal H&As!) - I have always loved that shape the most, and through the years, my taste hasn''t changed from that.

If I couldn''t have a RB though, I would probably choose a cushion as my second favorite shape.

Buuuut, let me say that, while I definitely have favorites, I can certainly appreciate the beauty of all the various diamond shapes, especially when set in some lovely setting.

Faves:
1. Cushion
2. Round Brillant
3. OEC

Hate:
1. Princess
2. Hearts

The fave list above isn''t in any particular order, I like them depending on the setting etc. I adore cushions but want a RB engagement ring because of the extra sparkle. But cushions are dreamy! I hope to get a nice right hand ring one day. I would also really love an antique with an OEC.

I don''t like princess cuts because I just don''t like the way they look as a whole. I just, really, really don''t like them. Hearts I think are cheesy and would have been cute on me as a teenager but would look ridiculous now.

The only shape I''ve never seen in a setting that made me like/love it is a heart. It''s way too cutesy for my tastes. So for me, it''s all about the setting fitting the stone.

My most favorite and what you will find in my jewelery box

Round Brilliants

My least favorites and you will not find in my jewelery box

Heart
Marquise

All the other cuts are nice as well. I will never pass one up.

Favs:
Emerald Cuts
Asschers (must be a good cut, good color, great size)
Marquise (there is a T&Co one on ebay right now that for some reason I love, my mom has one so I always was fond of it, on the right person!)
Round (in a classic setting!)

Least Favs:
Ovals
Princess
Radiant
Cushion
Rose Cuts
Pears

MY ALL TIME LEAST FAV:
Heart shaped diamonds
38.gif

Faves:

EC''s!
Cushions
OEC''S

Least Faves:

Heart
Marquise
Princess
Radiant
Pear

Like, but not for me:

Round
Asscher
Oval

Love:
Emerald Cuts
Asshers
Cushions

Definitely not for me:
Round Brilliants
Radiants
Anything with too much sparkle (I know, a lot different than most of you ladies, haha. I just can''t pull it off.)

I personally love going into stores looking for emerald cuts and getting offered a rectangular radiant instead EVERY.SINGLE.TIME. I politely say I''m not interested in a radiant but have my heart set on an emerald. "But this one sparkles! Look at all the facets! It''s the same shape as an emerald!" I just want to scream "I don''t like the sparkle! And I''m looking for an emerald cut because it''s an emerald cut NOT because it''s a rectangle."
