Hi Guys,

I was just wondering, what is the strongest type of prong setting?

Thanks!!!

Hi Daisi,

Stongest based on what? I suppose it all depends, type of metal, expected use, item being set, 4 prongs, 6 prongs.....

Sorry I should have been more specific.

Is a four prong stronger than a 6 prong, or beaded, or pave (not sure if they are the same thing).

Thank you!

Well speaking from my own experience and understanding...

I had 4 prongs but changed to 6 because...

I worried about knocking the stone on the top and bottom (especially on doors) and 6 prongs protected the stone better.
If one prong loosens on 4 prongs, it may drop the stone; less likely in 6 prongs.
I think that 6 prongs is the best, but it can make the stone look more hexagonal. (Based on a round cut)

Do some searches for pics of the stone settings you mentioned for a better idea. For example, pave is more of a side stone set involving tiny cuts of stone, bezel is a full/half/partial setting of the stone around the circumfernce (the girdle), bead is like channel but uses teeny prongs to hold the stones in place.

What type of metal are you considering?

Well, my whole e-ring is made out of platinum, so the whole thing is quite strong. Within the band are smaller diamonds and I read stories about people who lose the smaller stones that are set into their bands. My stones look to be prong set into the band and I was wondering which type of setting was the strongest for these types of smaller stones. I worry about how prone they are to falling out....

It also depends on the prongs themselves, how well they are made, how thick they are, how large the diamond is, etc. I would just focus on getting a high quality setting from an excellent manufacturer and getting your ring insured. Beyong that, I would just pick out what you like!

All I know is that the prongs that hold down the little diamonds in the band were hand done...It''s a good ring so I think it should be fine. Scares me think of losing one of my sparklies :)

So you don''t mean the actual prongs you mean how the pave/smaller diamonds are set? Channel set is the strongest in that case.

Ditto, pave isn''t that strong. This shouldn''t really be a huge concern though because it doesn''t cost that much to replace tiny sidestone melee and it''s fairly common to loose a sidestone, so don''t worry if it does happen.

This is a picture of my e-ring. Are these type of diamonds on the band pave, beaded, melee? Sorry! I''m really unfamiliar and get really confused with the different types of small stone settings.

Daisi,

You have a stunning ring, congrats!

I am pretty sure that they are bead set - it is hard to see with your pic. I would mention that even as a worst case scenario, replacing one of those stones will not set you back much. Try not to worry about it. Get 6 month checks and regularly inspect your ring. It should be fine.

Again, very beautiful ring. Do I see some flour in your centre stone - yummy

Steel,

Thank you! I looked at the links you sent me and I do think that I have beaded stones in my band. I really appreciate your help!
