What is the appeal of halos?

Aside from making a smaller center stone look larger?

I think a halo makes a ring "about the whole piece" and not just about the center stone. Not that there's anything wrong with non-halo'd stones! It just changes what it is all about for me.

It depends on the halo, IMO. Some are more a frame and some are to make the center stone seem larger.

I had a double halo for the second reason, but then reset that into more of a frame style halo.

+1. Couldn’t have said it better. The stone is only a part of the ring with a halo. In a solitaire, it’s all about the stone. I appreciate both.

Nice little twinkling flashes surrounding a center stone is eye catching to me. Halos can be made into an interesting shape around the center. For example, rounds with cushion or octagonal halos. I know when I had my halo setting, I love the soft pillowy shape of a cushion, but I wanted the sparkle that only a round stone provides. So I did a cushion halo - best of both worlds. They can also help define the shape of the center stone - like the clipped corners of an asscher or emerald cut. Another thing a halo is good for is softening shape of the center stone - like if you have a very thin marquise center, but want the look to be a little softer and chubbier - throw a halo around that thing! ;)

I’m learning about this right now. It feels so romantic in the OEC I have in a temporary halo ring. I’m loving the extra size but something beyond that too. Probably resetting to an 8 prong solitaire but I have to say I’m enjoying this halo right now. :kiss2:

Everything stated above. Plus, I love that the girdle of my early OEC has the added protection from the halo!

Provides lots of little sparklies...

I also like the contrast between the little sparkles of the halo and the bigger facets of the center stone
(especially if the stone is a step cut). Sort of a texture difference that adds interest.

Halos are in style now but I'm a solitaire man. A classic solitaire will always be in style.

Halos are beautiful but not for me.

Until HPD's Queen Pari was conceived, I was strictly a solitaire or 3-stone lady.

Queen Pari changed all that. The modified halo with HP Lux H&A melee provided contrast for the 2.31 Q-VVS2 CBI diamond. Yes it was a Q and way out of my comfort zone of F or better color diamonds. I think that I blew @Wink away when I called him at 10 pm asking him to put the diamond on hold for me :lol-2:

But I am very happy with the results. Makes a great RHR.

@cflutist Your ring is gorgeous! That setting complements the warmth of the diamond perfectly.

At the time I had gotten my baby diamond in her Vatche Grace halo, I had horses, 4 pits, and 4 kids living at home. The horses like to try and eat your rings. I used the Grace halo to protect my diamond from getting knocked around (it's a low setting to begin with, and the diamond sits low in the halo), as well as from getting eaten by the horses.

I didn’t think I was a halo person at all, till I got one. :mrgreen2: I love it for all the reasons listed above.

That’s not to say I don’t appreciate the simple beauty of a solitaire either, they’re just different.

I used to like them for others but definitely not for me. And now I have two from Victor Canera with coloured stones and I love them!

I joined PS years ago and had never seen a halo ring before (I live in England). Lots of Princess Diana style rings but nothing like I've seen here. I couldn't wait to get one. I like them for the finger coverage and the sparkle! I wore mine for a short time before I realised I actually wanted a solitaire instead. Then I wanted something else and then something else and so on and so on....

I like halos as they provide better finger coverage on my short chubby fingers.
They also make a nice contrast against coloured stones to make them stand out more.
My personal favourite is air line/gap halos, and I had my EC diamond set in one, another similar design set with a rectangular blue green Tourmaline about the same size as my EC.
I am not a fan of double halos though as they look too fussy for my liking.

DK :))

Solitsires are not for me unless they are bezel set with a thick shank at least 4mm at the top.

Very fashionista. I love all settings but most solitaire settings make me feel traditional and I’m anything but. When I wear a halo, it feels more me. The irony is that i love to spot solitaires on others but when I wear them, they make me feel like I’m lacking that extra extra. Lol.

Who isn't fascinated by UFOs?:eek2::-o:eek-2::shock:

I so agree with this, when I went from a solitaire (I do love simplicity but got bored) to a halo, the responses I got was “before it was just a rock and now it’s a finished piece of work.”

This pretty much sums up the life of a PSer :D

As other's have said, there are a lot of reasons to love halos. However I think the main appeal has to do with supply and demand. Antiques show a lot of halos because there weren't a whole lot of big diamonds on the market.

Halos are a way to use tiny diamonds to good advantage. This saves money of course. A fun fact is that after the collapse of the Soviet Union small high quality diamonds began to be more available. Designers began to use them, and De beers actually pushed them to keep market prices for stones steadier and to discourage the Russians from dumping all those tiny stones on the market. So in many ways we're back to the situation of the 19th century.

I think halos are on the way out. They are still very popular but the fashion forward writers are starting to snub them.

If halos are on their way out, what’s on it’s way in? Just curious. =)

I’d consider a halo for a gem that might need a bit of extra protecting, but otherwise I feel they are too blingy for my lifestyle.
