What do you think of this 5 stone ring?

Hello all -

I have been looking for a platinum 1 carat 5 stone ring pre-loved for a little while. I found this one recently posted on eBay. It says it is a modern (not antique) band that has been polished to like new. There isn’t a lot of information about the diamonds other than they are E/F. I was wondering if this is considered a good deal for the price? I am a little worried that they might be too white for my H colored diamond with G halo or a G colored moissanite solitaire. I really wanted to be in the G color range but I haven’t been able to find one in a 1 carat in this low profile style that is also in platinum and like new looking. Any feedback would be great....

Well, there is a 30 day return policy on it so if not what you wanted or expected you could return it. Even though they are fairly up close photos, its
difficult to tell anything about the stones.

I think I can see inclusions in the center stone and others. I would be highly suspicious of the E-F color grade. I am also a little hesitant because of the blown out quality of the photos. If you are comfortable with the return policy go for it, if you cannot afford to loose that amount of money I would pass.

I was surprised it was marked as E/F as well. I have looked at a lot of 5 stone rings and most seem to be made with G stones. I tried asking a few questions but I only get back that they are white and sparkly and can be returned. I would need to change it by two sizes so I would have to buy it and keep/return or size it and return but lose that money. It is always hard to get detailed & specific information out of ebay vendors that sell in mass quantities.

I have tried LT and DB but can’t seem to find a 1 carat in platinum in the $1000 range....

Can you reach out to the seller & ask for more info on the stones? If it’s 1cttw, they are approx. 20pts/ea. They look super white in the photos, but the photos are super bright, and blown out, as stated, above.
If you’re sinking $$$$ into a diamond ring, you should know what you’re paying for; diamonds or Platinum.

I sent a second note to the seller so we will see if he responds over the holiday period. I asked a bit more about clarity, eye clean/inclusions. The photo’s do make it impossible to tell. Hopefully he will be more specific this time.

@swaye2010 Have you tried reaching out to 1477 Jewelers? They are in Las Vegas and can often hunt things up for their clients in the local pawn shops. I know their owner has done this for other PS'ers in the past.

I will take a look at them and see. We don’t have many pawn shops around where I live. I have never bought anything pre-owned before but I have wanted a 5 stone ring for some time and I don’t have enough for a new one right now. It has been hard to find one in that low shared prong setting that is 1 carat and platinum. If I compromise on one of those things, I know I won’t be happy. I have found some in yellow gold a little cheaper but it is expensive to change out the setting again unless I got the diamonds dirt cheap.

Other covered the diamond, but I'd just have you look at the setting. When judging a ring, always look inside.

The quality of the "re-polish" leaves me to question their abilities. If you look inside the band, you can see a lot of texture. It looks to me that there was a lot of casting remnant and they (or someone) tried to polish it offi. But, not only did not not remove the casting marks, they added long striations.. They don't know how to use the tools they have. That always makes me questions everything.

This is why it is great to be able to post these questions. I always buy new because I don’t have a detailed eye for buying preloved. I was wondering about those marks on the inside but I thought it was something to do with the photo program that was used. That doesn’t look very good now that you point this out. I think this company is located in Canada as well, which will slow down the return the process.

If they were well versed in diamonds, they would use descriptors much better than white and sparkly. A heavily included stone can face up white just because of the inclusions.

I too don't like the workmanship of the setting and highly doubt that their color grading is accurate. You generally get what you pay for so I would beware. A refund policy is great but not sure it would be worth the possible hassle.

Wilson Brothers also has an etsy shop, a Rubylane shop, and their own website ... it may be worth checking to see if the band is also listed on any of their other sites as sometimes additional photos and/or videos may be in one place but not another.

I have bought from them several times; kept one or two rings, and returned others. My purchases have been through their Rubylane shop and their own website.

FWIW, based on my own experience, I find them to be a reputable company with good customer service, their descriptions generally are reliable, refunds are given promptly.

I did see it listed on their etsy shop but the listing was the same. I will take a look at Ruby Lane and see if there is anything else that might help. Here is the 2nd response I got back:

The diamonds are VS2-SI1 and completely eye clean. They are round brilliant cut. There is no precise definition for hearts and arrows but they are close to excellent/ideal cuts.

I think you wiuld be exceptionally pleased woth the dimaond and quality.

Best,
Michae
