Hi looking for some feedback on this rock that I went to see.

Looks nice in real life and bigger than I imagined.

Price quoted including setting (platinum) is £10,250.

Please let me know what you think as I am a total novice!

Can't tell.you squat of any substance from a lab report for princesses.

But princesses are the cut most prone to chipping so any princess with very thin part girdle is a automatic reject.

Thank for the replies:

1 - not too square - is that a positive or negative?

2 - is this one thin? Ideally what should I be looking for? Budget is 10k (GBP) max including setting and has to be princess cut in platinum.

Thanks again - it's a real minefield if you don't know your stuff!

Look up 'thin girdle princess' on google on PS search. High Performance diamond has excellent cut and performance tutorials read those too. Learn the anatomy of a diamond.

Do exchange rate for us, tell us your budget in USD.

You've come to the right place, we will help you.

Thankyou both,

Yes around $13,000.

If I'm honest it's the first stone I've seen in real life.

Be more than willing to look at other stones of course.

So I'm guessing I should look for something more square, thick girdle and a better grade?

Appreciate any links - I'm assuming bluenile a good place to start?
Mthanks again

I wouldn't go bragging about that stone. That's a terrible ASET. It's not even acceptable let alone "great" as you claim. Performance sucks.

OP, please ignore the self promoting vendor in this thread. We can help you find a truly fantastic stone in budget from a reputable vendor.

Unless you are flying out here there will be import taxes and such, are those in addition to your budget? Or does the 13k include that? If it does you need to figure those out and give us an adjusted budget that is for the stone only.

Gypsy, you are correct that is not a great aset but I wanted to show what is available which is better than his original stone at a lower budget. I am not trying to offer him the stone or promote myself in any way. Maybe my msg didn't come across the way it was intended. I still insist that the OP speak with his jeweler and get a more personal explanation for the stones he selects. :)

I just have firm boundaries with newer vendors. It does come across that way so please be aware. I appreciate you clarifying. =)

I like this princess. https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/1.51-carat-g-color-vs2-clarity-sku-1943904 Please put it on hold and ask them for an ASET image.

This one is a beauty too. https://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/princess-cut/1.51-carat-d-color-vs2-clarity-sku-1925898

But the G above is my first choice. It's a very well balanced stone and the price is excellent and so is the spread.

Settings:

https://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/platinum-petite-diamond-accent-engagement-ring-item-50319

Both of those can be made for a princess.

But, are you SURE your lady WANTS a princess? 100% she asked for a princess by name?

Gypsy thanks so much for all of your help.

I agree that James Allen first ring looks excellent especially at that price.

Is the girdle not thin again or am i reading that wrong?

She definitely asked for a princess by name after seeing a friends stone.

However this was a Tiffany ring and it could have been the setting that she liked more....

Would k get more bang for my buck with a different cut?

Many thanks again

Sorry. My bad. yes, the D has a very thin girdle. So forget about that one.

The G is okay. It is "thin" not "very thin" so I would ask James Allen to have their gemologist look at the stone and tell you HOW MUCH of it is THIN and WHERE it is thin.

What was the Tiffany setting?

I'm not entirely sure of the setting - it could have been something similar to this:

http://m.tiffany.co.uk/engagement/rings/princess-cut?trackpdp=bg&origin=engagement&search_params=param+0/0/0/0/0/0/GRP10027#p+1-n+1000-c+-s+-r+-t+-ni+1-x+-pu+-f+-lr+-hr+-ri+-mi+-pp+

Or could have been the 6 claw Tiffany setting which wouldn't be a princess....

Fees and taxes to import are looking like 2-3k ($) Which seems a real waste.

I am in the US with my gf 4 weeks after the proposal so I could potentially get a 'holding' ring - and then get some more input from her.

Then i could potentially avoid taxes and pick up the ring from the US on our vacation?

Thanks again

To avoid ruining the surprise, does she have a close friend or sister you can get to ask about stone shape of the size you are considering vs huge ones she may admire? I've had lunch dates with friends for just this purpose...just added a convenient trip to a B&M near the restaurant.

No. Blue nile disqualifies it. Stick to only Signature Line stones at Blue Nile.

Thanks Gypsy,

Would you recommend jamesallen over bluenile?

I either go with a ring here in the next 4 weeks or buy a novelty holding ring and then pick one up from the US at the end of October.

Definitely has to be princess cut - I asked her friend again yesterday.

So I'm thinking I should be able to get:

Circa 1.50 carat
F/G
VS2
With the highest cut available.

The high import taxes is a real shame and seems a waste if I choose Jamesallen?

Appreciate all the help

You just want a simple platinum solitaire. See how has the best stone (stick to only Blue Nile Signature at BN).

Gypsy,

Thanks for your help.

I have looked again this morning and have come across the following stones.

In order of preference - which would you feel would be best for solitaire platinum?

http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD02687653?click_id=115600088

Many thanks

So for the 12/13k $ budget is there anything out there in a princess cut that is better than any listed above?

Please don't think I'm being lazy but I'm just looking for a bit of help from the more seasoned pros!

Thanks again

One of these two:
http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD06193017
http://www.bluenile.com/diamond-details/LD03570405

Or the first one on your list above.

All Blue Nile Signature are guaranteed eyeclean there is no sense in paying for clarity you can't see. An eyeclean SI1 loooks the same as a VVS. These are lovely stones with proper spread for weight. Many of stones above only face up at 6.2mm.

Settings:
http://www.bluenile.com/build-your-own-ring/truly-zac-posen-knife-edge-solitaire-engagement-ring_55261?elem=img&track=product
http://www.bluenile.com/build-your-own-ring/petite-solitaire-ring-platinum_19010?elem=img&track=product

Just tell them you want 'very delicate prongs'.

When comparing princess cuts with GIA reports against those with AGS reports it is important to understand the distinctions between the two with regard to cut quality and light performance. GIA does not include an overall cut grade on princess cuts (only on rounds). The AGS cut grade is a light performance based grade assessed by computerized ray tracing of a 3D model of the diamond. Details of AGS grading of princess cuts can be found here:
https://www.pricescope.com/journal/ags-laboratories-diamond-cut-grading-princess-cut
