What do you think of pole dancing?

In Singapore, it's been quite the craze! There're studios all over the place offering pole dancing classes. I've seen a few women doing some sorts of pole dance moves in night-clubs (without the pole, if I might add)! There's even been a pole dance competion recently.

So, what are your views? A way to keep fit, artistic or just plain old sordid/ meant to titillate men?

We participated in a class as part of a bachelorette party... it was the hardest thing i've ever done.

I was sore for a week and think i pulled a shoulder muscle.

Well of course it is done in bars to get men to pay $10 for a beer but it doesn't have to be for that.

I'll bet it is a great physical workout and could be very challenging and satisfying to hone your skill in locations where there are no men leering at you.

I've seen a video clip of certain year's #1 world pole dancer. And I must say that it's so beautiful it's like an art, nothing sexual. It can be a great work out and a fun things for girl friends to do together as long as it doesn't involve money and guy~

I used to do it professionally and I was in the best shape of my life. I could do about 50 pull-ups is a row. I got an office job and now I can't even do one. Obviously I'm not the person to ask on whether it's vulgar.

Aren't most dances designed to catch the interest of the opposite sex??

If it's acrobatic in nature and fully clothed, sure. But I personally have no interest in jumping on a bandwagon that markets the idea that women need to learn how to perform for their husbands, since I'm guessing it's advertised as a way to feel sexy and spice things up, not as an athletic accomplishment. I don't feel strongly about it or care if other people do it; I just don't think women should feel the need to act like strippers or p*rn stars to keep their partners' attention. Even if an individual has a wonderful marriage and is doing it just for the fun of it, I think the industry as a whole is degrading to women, so I don't think I would want to support it by buying classes.

I agree with portions of this. It was huge in NYC for awhile - and women love to say it's just a great workout, that's all! Which it is, and fun, and for that I say it's fine...but there is an underlying aspect that has to do with appealing to men's fantasies and vamping up one's sexiness..and surely there has to be ways other than learning how strippers writhe on a pole? I think it's evident that stripper/porno culture sells right now (Paris Hilton/Britney Spears, celeb sex videos, fashions among young and younger girls, some video dance routines...). Kind of sad and just hope the pendulum swings the other way before my DD hits the tweens!

My college roommate has done it professionally...most recently at a club in NYC called The Executive Club. She has been in Playboy 6 times (last I checked). The girl is GORGEOUS but more importantly, she is an AMAZING dancer...she just used that style for awhile to get ahead. She is RICH RICH RICH now, living on the beach in Miami and "retired", getting ready to open a boutique and has graduated from Fashion school. She has been EXTREMELY smart with her money.

The fad in the gyms and for private classes seem "fun" but I could never bring myself to do it because I have watched my friend and I know that *I* look like a COMPLETE fool--lol!!! I WISH I had some of the coordination it takes to be good!!

It bothers me. Why don't men feel they have to do something comparable to turn women on? {not that I'd EVER in a million years think pole dancing by either sex a turn on, but I thin you get where I'm going....}

There are several Youtube videos of this.
Not that I'd ever watch them, and not that I'd ever laugh. :Up_to_something:

Me, either. Do people pole dance for Jesus? *confused*

I've seen some truly talented dancers online doing this. It's really amazing. The fact that it's associated with stripping is really moot if you're using it as part of a workout.

It's really great exercise. I've done it a few times over the years. Here in southern CA it's been a new "it" thing for a little while. I think there's phases of what becomes popular, a while ago it was kickboxing, bikram yoga (hot yoga), boot camp, now it's pole dancing. Honestly pole dancing and pilates is the thing that makes my body look AMAZING. I see changes within a week or two. It's immediate and it improves my posture along w/ making me feel muscles I never even knew that I had.

Honestly, I'm sooo over getting on the treadmill and elliptical. I've been a runner since I was young and I go running 4-5x a week, but when I want a good work out I love dance style classes. it's fun and I sweat and it does not feel like a workout.

I've done two classes and it's great. I absolutely adore it. I think it looks great when professionals do it.

I absolutely love it (watching other do it). I can't wait to try a class out soon!!

I think its a great way to stay fit because it can be really fun.

I would have a pole installed in my house if I had the room for it. In the future though, I will :Up_to_something:

LOL. What a silly way of naming something that has nothing to do with church. Nice.

No, not even I could make something like THAT one up. It is serious, or at least real. Serious might be too strong a word for pole dancing as a form of worship. Wacky or out there maybe...

Be happy.
Pole dancing for Jesus is better than ( and probably even a few IQ points above) crashing commercial jets into skyscrapers for Allah.

Indifferent but the spelling mistake on this poster made me laugh.

I saw that on the news one night not too long ago, and quite frankly I found it disturbing. Not as disturbing as a pole dancing class for toddlers, but nevertheless - disturbing.

Thanks for all your replies.

That's interesting how it's associated with different perspectives.

The reason I asked is because my GF asked me to join her in a class, but I was and still am rather reluctant. I mean the concept has been long associated with strippers and so on, but I recognise that it can be a great workout / it doesn't have to be sleazy. What caused me to stop and think though was when I saw i) our guy friends going all ga-ga, making slightly lewd comments (even in front of a bunch of girls) when this one guy showed a YouTube video of a pole-dance competition; and ii) this woman doing some pole-dance moves in a night-club and it just looked rather weird/ inappropriate somehow (not sure how to describe it).

So while I guess I can still take the class for fit-keeping purposes, am not going to rush into it.
