Moosejaw, that would be very helpful. I have no problems with buying a used ring whatsover. Sounds like a good idea to me.

I''m not going to go way in debt for this. I have 4k in cash I can spend, then I was going to hopefully find a card with 0% interest for 12monthes and pay off that in the next few months. I don''t have credit cards, I am a huge believe in saving money and not being in debt. I have seen many people struggling to pay minimum payments each month and I refuse to live like that. Now, this is a once in a lifetime purchase, so I''m willing to go a little in debt for it. House and kids will be a few years out. We plan on getting a cheap 1 bedroom apartment while we both work to save $$ so she can stay home with the kids when they come and the house be mostly paid for.

I'm honestly not sure. I can see myself asking unexpectedly one night as we lay in bed just being us and talking or laying out looking at stars one night... I don't think I could do the whole have everything planned out thing. I would be so nervous all day and something wouldn't go just right and I wouldn't feel it was the perfect time for it. So I really don't know, but probably within the next 6 months or so would be my best guess...

If you happen to find a nice diamond in a hideous setting for a good price please let me know about that too. Thanks so much for your help!

I''m not a huge fan of heart shaped diamonds but i understand why some people could love them!

Here is a diamond in your price range from James Allen to get you started looking...

Its a 1 carat I VS2 for 3,500 and I bet the price would be lower with the pricescope discount

Here are some ring pics to give you ideas on settings (not sure if these links will work)

I think you can find a great diamond, in a great setting for a great price. I the links to anything I find on here. When buying used it can be a little risky, and trickier. What I would do is go with a brand named signed item, i.e. Tiffany or Cartier, since they have very decent policies on their rings. This way no matter what city you live in, the person can ship it to the Tiffany store in your area, they can tell you if its legit, and you will get it at a discounted price since youre buying directly from the seller. When I say discounted prices, I typically see Tiffany rings selling at 40-60% off the purchase price.

I had a few picked out earlier...but I will find all the links, and let me know what you think.

Keep in mind some of the rings I am sure are negotiable and I would offer lower...and even if the stone isnt huge, the rings are beautiful. You can also call a Tiffany store and ask them the going rate for equivalent rings. Anything you buy used/online should be sent to an impartial appraiser in your area...and verified. Tiffany just seems the easiest. This is just a start so don't jump on anything yet.

Here are some links:

Tiffany #1
Tiffany #2
Nice ring
Ring 4 This looks like a potential good deal. I would offer 5500.00...but I would verify the stats, and call Tiffany to comp a price.
Ring 5 Against my better judgement, here is a decently priced heart shaped diamond ring. I again would offer 3500-3750 if the comps come out appropriately...the comps in my opinion should be close to double the value of the asking price. Not the appraisals but what the person paid.

Thank you so much.

I actually spent a few hours in a nice jewelry store today and they had a few heart shaped diamonds. I really like it, they just didn''t have the same sparkle that the quality round ones did. I hate these choices...

Crash:

Your eyes are not going to lie to you. With your budget I would certainly buy second hand, or online. Avoid the taxes as well. I really have a hard time trusting brick and mortar jewelers...so dont give into the hype.

I will definitley be buying online or second hand If i find what I want. I just wanted to get an idea of the size of a 1ct and say .75ct. It''s hard to tell from pictures alone.

The lady at the store amused me quite a bit. I''ve been reading for a few days on here and I think I knew more than she did. Quite funny, but it was pretty annoying.

I guess I''m in the minority when I say I really love heart shaped diamonds. However, for an engagement ring I''d choose a very simple, classic band, so the focus in on the shape of the stone. I find the thought of a heart shaped diamond engagement ring so romantic and a bit different to the norm. I say go for it, but check with the experts here if you find a stone you''re interested in. Some hearts are better shaped than others, so make sure you see it visually or have good photos from a PS vendor before you buy. GOOD LUCK and I''m definitely looking forward to seeing the end result in the ''show me the ring'' forum.

Honestly I think heart shaped diamonds are something that people tend to grow out of liking. I would just make sure that''s absolutely what she wants for a ring before getting one. I also don''t think its a big deal to propose without a ring and have her involved in picking one out. As for a used ring some girls can be picky about that, think its bad luck, personally I love my used ring because of what we saved (went through signedpieces, who I highly recommend).

I didn't read through the entire thread, so forgive me if I'm late, but having read a lot of the comments at the beginning, I am also in the "be careful; you might get tired of a heart-shaped diamond" camp. I would go with what some have suggested, hearts as side-stones maybe, or somewhere else in the design.

Here was a whole thread on a similar line:

https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/custom-design-2-diamond-ring-poll.51973/page-2

There were lots of suggestions if I remember right, and just before I saw that thread I had seen this ring:

http://www.ritani.com/home_html_2.php?stone=all&cat_id=98&gender=women&page=15&get_descr=1RD1235AAH&metal=&collection=&matching=&related=&nav=&top=jewelry

(One other thought: even if your girl is so sentimental now that she thinks she would NEVER change her ring, I used to be like that too - I used to think once the ring went on my finger it would never leave it; now I have changed my setting once and intend to again!

)

ETA: A few more thoughts:
- I know a man who proposed to his (now wife) with a necklace; that way she got to keep it for sentimental reasons, and still got to pick her ring. She almost always wears the necklace. Maybe you could get the heart-shaped stone as a pendant, and then the ring later??

- When I looked for the thread I posted above, I saw one with the idea of heart-shaped surprise diamonds. That seemed like it could be a good idea.
