What do people think of this stone?

Is there a reason you are looking at blue Nile stones? Astors seem to be overpriced. Whiteflash, HPD, BGD, and VC all have super idea cut stones and better upgrade policies than blue Nile.

Both appear to have good proportions. Of these two choices only I'd prefer the 1.71 J VVS2. It's cheaper. Doubtful you will see any color variation between a single color grade. And in both cases, VVS clarity is overkill, so I prefer to pay for less overkill with VVS2.

More importantly, the crown/pavilion combo is quite lovely on both stones. The 1.71 scores a 1.3 on HCA, whereas the 1.60 scores a 1.5 HCA. Both are passing scores.

However, the personality of the 1.71 will be a little more firey because of the smaller table. The larger 58 table will favor a little more brilliance (white light) than fire. If you aren't aware, as table size decreases, the upper girdle facets increase. Rainbow light (fire) is produced in the upper girdle facets, so smaller table = larger upper girdle facets = more fire. The inverse is just as true, so larger table = smaller upper girdle facets = less fire & more white light.

But honestly, there is more to picking a diamond than just proportions and the 4 C's. If you were to pick either of these stones I'd encourage you to ask for an ASET or idealscope image. We saw a similar stone the other day and despite having lovely proportions the idealscope revealed leakage at the 9 o'clock position.

Myself, I'd consider dropping clarity to an eye clean SI1, or VS2 and going up to G/H on color and/or jumping into a super ideal H&A stone.

Some super ideal H&A options to ponder....

1.591 I VS2 @ $12,073

54 table, 61.6 depth, 34.5 crown, 40.7 pavilion & 76 LGF

WOW...WOW...WOW!!! A complete freakin' sparkle bomb!! Absolutely love this small table and that lovely 34.5/40.7 proportions. Plus those sexy fat arrows. Video is amazing along with all the images. And very clean VS2 to boot. This is the complete package!

1.924 J VS2 @ $14,687

56 table, 61.6 depth, 34.5 crown, 40.9 pavilion & 76 LGF

If you can tolerate J color and don't mind maximizing your dollars, then this gets you to nearly a 2 carat sparkle bomb! No matter what they tell you, size matters. ;)2

1.654 F SI1 @ $15,697
https://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-4087217.htm

56.8 table, 61.0 depth, 34.5 crown, 40.8 pavilion & 76 LGF

Is this fat arrow day or something? Third straight one with 76 LGF, which is unusual. But I'm not complaining as I love'm. Big bold flashes with a lovely 34.5/40.8 combo. Here you are maximizing your budget to stay within your original size but getting a color bump to F -- hell yeah! :cool2:

I do have a concern though. Look at the 2 o'clock position in the images & videos. It appears there are some crystals. We are looking at magnified views, so they are exaggerated. But you need to make sure this bad boy is eye clean -- it may NOT be. Also, looking at the clarity plot, I don't see these plotted.

Easy to verify though. WF vets and stocks all their stones on-site. Call them and have one of their gemologist pull the stone and confirm if eye clean.
