Well, after a long chat about things, my boyfriend and I decided that we''re going to go with a diamond engagment ring!

But I have a question...I am looking at a .64 diamond and was wondering what that would look like on a size 8 finger...Thanks!!!

Yeah! You get to go ring shopping! Congrats!

Picking out a diamond is really a personal preference. My suggestion would be to try on as many as possible!!

I''m also loving the halo settings right now!

04diamond, your best bet may be to message the admin and ask him to change the topic of your post to "Show me your 1/2-ish caraters on size 8s" or something like that.

Then anyone who has a ring close to that carat weight, and a finger close to that size, will see the thread and (hopefully) post a pic for you.

Also, you said ".64 diamond" but you didn't mention what shape diamond. Different shapes face up very differently! For instance, my 1.96 Asscher faces up the same as a 1.3ish round brilliant!!

So that's an important distinction to make.

Somewhere around here is a diamond size chart, I think originally found on amazon.com. I'll try to find the link for you! ETA: Here it is!

EagainTA: You can also look through the "Forum Engagement Ring/Eye Candy" thread, where you'll find nearly every ring ever posted on PS.

good point musey...its a round....thanks!!!

the only problem with that chart is that I never know what the actual size is...because what it shows should be a 1/2 carat looks like a 1 carat...

This is just what I found by scanning the first 15 pages of the Forum Engagement Ring folder, I''m sure there are more around here.

Here''s a .75ct RB on size 8:

This asscher is a 1.17ct, which is pretty similar to a .6ct RB (not sure what finger size, though

Here''s a .51ct RB on a 7.5 finger:

A .27ct RB on size 4.5 finger (which will be pretty comparable dimensions to .64 on an 8):

Have you thought about what kind of setting? Are you a modern clean cut kinda gal- maybe a tiffany etoile setting a la Whiteflash or a bit more dainty as in Chrono''s OEC in a vintage inspired tiffany setting- both are bezel settings which would make the diamond look bigger...

You have to use a ruler and measure the stones. If it says 6.5 underneath a stone diagram, adjust the zoom until it fits 6.5mm on a ruler. It depends on the calibration of your monitor, but on mine 120% zoom is pretty accurate.

Not all the mm estimates are correct (for my stone, the asscher estimate is WAY off!) but I think that the RB estimates are pretty close to accurate.

Musey - I didn''t know that about asschers? That they face up smaller than rounds...how can that be? I have heard that emeralds face up larger than rounds...but I guess that must be because of the elongating. But asschers are symmetrical.

I'm VERY, VERY surprised that you've never heard that before. It's a very commonly approached topic on these boards, and if you do a basic search for asschers and rounds of the same carat weight, you will see the difference in dimensions.

I haven't heard either way about emeralds facing up larger/smaller than rounds, but I know that asschers face up smaller. The biggest reason is that they are cut deeper, so therefore more carat weight is in the belly of the stone.

ETA: Here are some resources for you:
Does a 2ct Asscher appear smaller than a 2ct Round?
Asscher cut center stones?

Here's a helpful image (be mindful of the ct weights... the RB is a 2.00ct while the asscher and emerald are both 3.00ct):

Forgive me, I''m new to this board. And to diamonds.

Musey- how do you upload multiples?
33.gif

nebe, I didn''t upload them (note no attachment on the post), they''re hosted elsewhere on PS

Oh? so you just post the HTML?

Yep! Right-click on the image and select "Copy Image Address," then click on the little image button above the type field for your post and paste the address there. Makes sharing images so much easier!!

I really wish we could upload multiple pics per post, though, that would save some time & space!

04diamond, I hope some of those pics helped. What kind of setting are you thinking of?

It will probably be in a 4 prong solitaire setting...white gold...

ECs face up smaller than rounds. MQ and pears face up the largest.

It''ll be gorgeous and classic! Don''t worry too much about figuring out how it will look on your hand, especially if you''ve already settled on/bought the stone. Pictures can be deceiving in so many ways, and never really compare to the real-life experience of a ring, in my opinion.

Regardless, I do hope the pictures and links I posted helped you! Congratulations on your upcoming engagement!!

I can''t post a pic right now because we''re mid-move and my computer is packed up (grrr...) but if you scroll through the under 1 ct thread, mine is in there near the end - I have a .62 EC on a size 8. Have you looked at ovals? I''ve always wanted an EC, so there was really no question in my mind, but several jewelers pointed me toward an oval to maximize coverage. Might be something to toss around?
