So Mara, will Greg's fabulous raise translate to a new Tudor home? We'll have to stay tuned to see! And btw......I haven't seen a picture that included your face, but I'm betting your face matches the rest of your body, which is to say, I'm sure Greg takes the prettiest girl in the neighborhood on walks!

Emerald......glad you enjoyed the kickboxing class. Pain equal's good things ultimately, so keep it up!!!

Lorelei......it's always good to see you keep on going. Good for you getting hubby to stop hogging the station and let you have a go at it

Last night was night two of our triple during the week gym sessions. I was tired going into it, but was determined to work hard. I had commented about my heart rate on the elliptical being low, so I spoke with my trainer and he just had me raise the level of difficulty pretty significantly to elevate my rate to about 150. My legs are a bit sore this morning, but I did get my heart rate higher for the 45 minutes and that's good. It did make it harder for me to fall asleep last night. I guess I'll have to readjust to the higher level..........Anyway, tonight is day three. Since I didn't sleep too well last night, I'm not sure how hard I'll work tonight, but work I will. Tomorrow is Friday, which means Sushi! Yeah!!!

EDIT: Hey Danielle: Got to get off the couch girl!! Now that you've publicly announced your going to the gym today, we'll look forward to hearing how it went tomorrow.........

Sorry to hear about your dad needing surgery......

"Tis only fair after all. I told him off and made him tremble as when I humbly asked him if he would help me with it and a routine, he said '' Don''t forget I have MY workout to do too" Boy he suffered for that one!

OK, I made it to the kickboxing class last night and WOW, let me just say I knew it would be intense but not THAT intense, lol! There were only like, 8 of us in the class, so that was nice...our instructor was a crazy drill sargeant chick who was very motivational for me. I was wearing one of my breast cancer walk t-shirts, and at one point she got up in my face and was like, "come on, get mad! I know you have it in you, even though you''re one of those nice little volunteer people!" I thought that was pretty funny. After the first 20 minutes of kickboxing moves, she got out the jump ropes and we did about 5 minutes of that, which had me huffin'' and puffin''! We finished with some good ol'' butts n'' guts using 5 lb. dumbbells, and needless to say, I''m pretty sore today. I''m so glad I went, and I wish the class was offered more than once a week, but there are several others I will try now that I got a bit of a confidence booster last night. I thought I was a lot more out of shape than I really am...I surprised myself by how well I was able to keep up. I even came home and worked my arms again last night while I was still feeling the euphoric effects!

Tonight there is a beginner''s Pilates mat class...I don''t know if I''m ready for Pilates yet, but there is a Saturday morning yoga class that''s supposed to be really good. I think I may try the yoga first. If I don''t do the class tonight I will do some weights and cardio on the treadmill hill program again.

OK, I should probably get some work done now...everyone have a great day!

Ha ha hahaha!!! ROFLMOA - Butts n'' guts, hilarious Monnie! I have never heard that one before!

Rod you''re too cute. Here is my Who''s Who thread where there are some pictures of both Greg and I. Face really hasn''t changed much!! Some checker yesterday told me he thought I looked 25....but he WAS flirting with me...so hmm not sure how valid his age estimate is. hehee.

Mara:

As to the Tudor house....well we have been thinking for a while now about what our next steps are with our life...do we want to stay where we are in our place for a few more years or take advantage of the slowing market to get out with our appreciation while we can, and into a bigger/better kind of thing where we can stay there for 10+ years. This townhouse, as lovely as it is for us, was just supposed to be a 5 year thing and then we wanted to get into a house. So I''ve been ''looking'' in the surrounding areas but it''s very hard to think about leaving as this place has a TON of perks, we won''t find all of them in an actual house in a good neighborhood we can AFFORD. It''s just so expensive here. This Tudor has many of the elements we want and a separate MIL kind of room which would also make a fabulous separate office. But it''s pricey...eeee!

Congrats Monnie on getting into the class and doing it! LOL re the volunteer people thing!! Your gym only offers it once a week? That is a drag!!

I was going to say too that if any of you gals find yourself really loving kbox then I''d search out an actual kbox or karate studio like where I go...most karate places nowadays tend to want to supplement the income by doing a kbox class for a bunch of women at night..hehee. There is definitely more than a few near us...so I''d check out the areas around you in case you DO want to do something more than once a week and are willing to pay for it.

Lorelei, once you figure out how to learn the machine it will be great as for me the weight resistance stuff is really important as well to not be thin but flabbyish. Also, you can do your own body resistance exercises without using the machines which are just as effective. This is things like pushups or leg/glute (butt) exercises...situps and ab work etc. I try to incorporate some of this in at least 2-3x a week even with my gym and kickboxing because it really does continue to help ''tone'' the body. Usually I just do what Danielle did which is do an at home workout in front of the TV or something...I have been doing Lizzie''s bootcamp thing at home about 1x a week so I really get a lot of those exercises in at that time as well. I put on a fave show or soap opera and just work out in front of the TV. Of course this is while Greg is GONE like out running or something, I could never do it in front of anyone else..haha.

Haha, this is so funny to me cause I was working out by myself downstairs until fi came down. He saw me doing jumping jacks & asked me if I wanted to have a contest! I had to finish my workout once I started so he sat there and watched me. He was definitely laughing, but he did say I looked cute in my workout clothes
2.gif
. Also - I motivated him a bit because he did some push ups & sit ups with me

Morning All,

This is my no elliptical day, plan on walking tonight with hubby.

Not much else to share on that front.

Danielle: thanks for the kind words, I am too. Sometimes I''m down and out for a week, it was only 2 days which is a huge relief.

OMG......Mara, I knew you would be beautiful, but I had no idea you were incredibly beautiful. And it''s not just on the outside. You are obviously beautiful inside and out!

BTW.......Interesting about Greg being an MBA and scientist, but really amazing he is a musician to boot. My degree is in classical clarinet, and I played professionally for a while, until I realized that I was good, but not so good that I would land one of the Major Symphony positions someday. Also, I realized that musicians live for music, not money and I''m afraid I have a taste for the finer things, so I packed up my instruments over 28 years ago and never looked back. My parents were most upset over this as they had made quite an investment in my music, but such is life.

I''m afraid in addition to the Car of the Month Club, we''re also members of the House of the Month Club. I wouldn''t be the kind of guy to offer advice. I believe life''s too short and if there''s something you see you want AND you could afford it, I''d go for it. At least with real estate it''s an appreciating purchase! Good luck with that decision.

Thanks Mara!!

Hi ladies! Ok, so I am officially joining the club. My boyfriend and I have been together for about 5 1/2 years and we are always complaining about how much weight we''ve each gained since we started dating, and how cute & thin we used to be ( sometimes hindsight is viewed through rose colored glasses eh?

20.gif
hehe) So this morning I finally got my butt up and decided to do something about it. I went for a run, albeit a short one, and I''m feeling really motivated. I brought along my little dog, assuming that she would probably get tired, but that it would be a fun run. She blew me away! She loved it and stuck with me (actually ahead of me) through the whole thing, she probably could''ve gone a few miles and been fine. So, now I know i have an awesome workout partner, which is great, especially because I know if i get her into a routine that she enjoys, she will bug me until i take her out for that run every morning, so thats really good, because for me motivation is key, which is where this thread comes in handy too. It’s encouraging to know that you ladies are working hard at it too, and many of you have made similar changes.

So here is the situation, I''ve gained about 15-20 lbs in the last 5 years and would ideally like to lose at least 30lbs. Not just to be thinner, but also to be healthier and to feel better in my own skin. ( And, I''d be lying if I didn''t say that the idea of possibly decreasing my ring size is a big motivation
31.gif
) I''m only 23, and I know that I need to set a pattern of a healthy lifestyle now, because it''ll only get harder as I get older. Plus, I''m a shortie...only about 5'' 4"...which means that weight shows much more on my relatively petite frame than many of my much taller friends. I shop pretty healthy, lots of whole grains, fruits, nuts, I try to buy things that have a high fiber content. My road block is that my boyfriend frequently eats fast food (gross, I know) and loves to go out to dinner, and I have been in the habit of tagging along, and my waist line proves it. We recently bought a house, so financial constraints have slowed the going out to dinner issue, but the fast food one has been harder for him. I never buy the stuff, and have stopped eating it if he brings it home ( I just have to remind my self how gross the stuff is, and that even if it tastes good , its full of junk that isn’t good for my body.) I’ve cut down on my snacking, and have stopped buying sweets, (chocolate is seriously my evil little buddy) I still have my slip ups, but I’m getting much better. So…the diet improvement has helped a bit, but honestly, not as much as I thought it would. I know now that I need the exercise. I’m going to start running every morning, doing my small run through the neighborhood until I get to the point where don’t feel like I’m dying and then my goal is to get to maybe 3miles each morning. I think honestly I’m at about ½ mile right now. But I’m out of shape and I know it will get better. I’m not really into the gym thing, so I was wondering if you ladies had any suggestions on exercises I could do on my own, around the house, etc. beyond running, sit-ups and push-ups. I appreciate any offerings you ladies have. Thanks!

.......careful, this thread isn''t just for ladies, there are actually a couple of us guys here too!
28.gif

Stick around, this thread is really active and there''s a core group of us sincerely interested in offering each other help and encouragement. Sounds like your goals are great and starting to run is a good thing. 1/2 mile out the gate is great and if you keep it up, you''ll be surprised how quickly you can add distance. And running is an amazing way to boost your metabolism and burn calories.

In answer to your question about exercises you can do at home, I reall really really recommend a book by Mark Verstegen called ''Core Performance Essentials.'' You need a mat and large ball and through this book you can do all sorts of core strengthening at home exercises. I have become quite evangelical about strengthening the core. With a strong core, you can accomplish so much.

Anyway, it''s great to see new members joining our healthy family.

Hi Rod
35.gif
! Sorry about that ! I''ve heard really great things about core exercises, thats actually a really great idea. I have a yoga mat (will that work?) and I actually almost bought one of those large exercise balls at costco the other day, I might just have to go back. Thanks!

Nothing to apologize about!! A yoga mat might work just fine. I tend to prefer the mats that are like a foam material and give a little more cushion, but that could also describe a yoga mat for sure. If it's just a flat mat and isn't foam like, you might want to see if Costco has one of them when you pick up the ball. Most important thing is to get that book. Any Borders has one, or you can get one online too.

Hope this helps.........

We have all age groups represented here as well as all shapes and sizes

And I should mention that Rod and I represent the male gender but I''m only 49.

Rod is actually going to be 52 but there''s no way you could tell...he appears much younger!

So whatever you decide to do...just do something great for your health and well being!

Good luck

Hubby and I just went on a great hike/walk. Our house backs up to a mountain and we followed the easement (sp?) back behind it (with a stick in hand to protect us from rattlesnakes...what a fun adventure!) and then walked the streets around our house for a while. It''s a fairly rural and hilly neighborhood (we live 3 miles up a mountain), especially for San Diego county, so it''s great for walking hills, which helps with the 3Day prep. We probably walked about 4 miles in total.

We''re having gnocchi with grilled peppers for dinner, delicious!

Hope you''re all having a great Thursday!

i''m going to workout in a few minutes...but i wanted to share something interesting...i''ve been getting hungrier in the last week and week and a half and i wasn''t sure if it was because i was not replacing my calories very well or what...so i decided to check my BMR calories plus workout against what it used to be, since i realized the last time i did the calculation was when i was working out 3x a week. so i redid it with 6x a week basically and i should be consuming 1700-2000 calories a day in order to lose weight. 2200 is my BMR+workout replacement calories. so i have been *trying* to stay around 1400 (1700 on days i work out so that i end up with ~1400 at end of the day) per day...so that would account for why i have been getting hungrier between lunch and dinner...i have about 200 extra calories per day before i feel like i''m ''okay''. so that was kind of interesting, guess i SHOULD be eating a little bit more anyway.

so just wanted to throw out there for some of you who have been working out more than you used to...don''t forget to recalculate how many calories you should be consuming to maintain weight vs lose it. especially as you lose weight, if you are losing weight, then you require less calories etc. since i have only lost 5 lbs but am working out 3x a week extra over before, i guess i need another 300 calories a day.

anyway i''m off to burn some calories then we are having burritos for dinner. yum!

Hi all! Haven't posted here in a couple of weeks or so, but I've been up to the same ol' same ol'. Teaching Bootcamp on Mondays, Kickbox on Tuesdays, Step on Thursdays, and trying (but not always succeeding) to get in at lease one other workout a week. For Bootcamp, I'm still doing the interval thing that I posted. It really kicks my butt! I'm always SO sore on Tuesdays!

The gym I work at has been having some probs
7.gif
Basically, we have quite a few newbie instructors right now, and they're just being ridiculously irresponsible (i.e. not showing up for their classes/cancelling last minute, not cleaning up after participants, leaving equipment out, etc.).
20.gif
Rumor is that a couple of them might be getting fired, so there's a good chance I'll be picking up a Wed. morning class.

I think I posted awhile back that I was going to try to get my personal trainer certification... well this is the weekend! I have a lot of studying to do between now and Sunday! Wish me luck!
1.gif

BTW Mara- I saw your pics in the Shopping thread, and dang girl... you look super fit! Ignore that silly scale... what you're doing is definitely working!
36.gif

Hi all! Sounds like everyone is working hard and staying motivated!! Yay!
36.gif
36.gif

Rod, I totally identify with the not sleeping well lately and I have been using that as an excuse not to push myself, excercise wise, which is a big mistake!! I read that you pushed on, without much sleep and you have motivated me to do the same, so thanks!

Mara, you hot chick! I saw your picture in the other thread and you look great! You must be so pleased with the changes you have made in your body! Congrats to you for being so dedicated! I don''t think you need to lose any more weight at all... so forget that scale!

My goal is to start skipping a little every day and build it up time wise. I am getting bored with other activities and this is something that I know I like. My rope is ready and waiting!

I hope everyone has a great weekend!!!
35.gif

So, I had my 3rd of three in a row workouts tonight. I always push harder on Thursday nights because I know tomorrow will be a complete day of rest. I''m going to take some simply sleep tonight (the PM part of Tylenol PM, without the Tylenol). Hopefully, that will help me come dowm from my endorphin high...........

HLMR, thanks for letting me know I may have helped to motivate you.

I''ll check in tomorrow. In the meantime, I hope everyone enjoys a great nights sleep.

I hope you have a wonderful night''s sleep Rod! Oh, and please call me Heather
1.gif

Mara, how do you figure out calories? i need to do that, i eat around 2000 a day, which i know is to much!!! But its that will power.

I did so good today, till i got to work, I swiped a piece of german chocolate cake from the cafeteria and then just now the pastry chef wanted me to try this new single vineyard chocolate creme bruleee....YUMMY.

I worked out on the eliptical for 45 minutes this morning....

msflutter- I know you addressed this question to Mara, but I really like www.fitday.com for calculating how many calories you need, how many you eat, and how many you burn. The free online one is better than the one you download, IMO. Sparkpeople has one too, but I prefer the fitday one... probably just b/c I''m used to it.

BTW... love your new avatar... we have some very similar Vegas sign pics! Someday I''ll actually go through all the photos and post some! I have some major bridal burnout.
2.gif

thanks heather and lizzie, that scale is definitely an evil evil creature!! it''s hard to believe that i have only ''lost'' 2-3 lbs yet my body looks so different. i wish i had gotten my body fat tested before and now to see if that is the big difference, but i figure it must be.

worked out tonite in kbox...the instructor was going WAY too easy for the first 20 min and i was frustrated because i knew it was my last kbox til saturday and i wanted to make it count. the day of ''rest'' (aka walking only) yesterday really let my muscles rest so they were raring to go tonight. but then another instructor took over and really worked us over!! so then i came home and did 250 jumping jacks and 2 series of pushups. tomorrow is a gym day on the treadmill and i am going to try to do a higher incline this time to burn more calories.

ms flutter...i use a few things to calc what i should be eating for calories, today i did sparkpeople since it saves my info. this is what it said for me...weighing 145 lbs, and 5''7" in height and age of 31.

Consume between 1710 & 2060 calories per day
Consume between 38 & 80 grams of fat per day.
Consume between 192 & 335 grams of carbohydrates per day.
Consume between 43 & 180 grams of protein per day.
Consume at least 8 cups of water per day.

that is what it is saying i should do because i am working out 6x a week with cardio and i am lifting weights about 2x a week and i estimated i am burning about 2200 calories per week based on my ''average'' of 350 calories per workout.

so then i went to this other website i have bookmarked:

http://www.freedomfly.net/Articles/Nutrition/nutrition14.htm

and did the calculation there too. so sparkpeople said between 1710-2060 (and that is with my goal of losing 10 lbs in mind); and this website after calcs said i should be eating 2250 to MAINTAIN my weight as it is now. but if i want to lose, i take calories out. so if i want to lose a lb every 2 weeks then i need to minus 1700 calories out of my per week intake, which averages about to be 250 calories per day. so then i would want to consume ~2k calories a day and workout 6x a week to lose 10 lbs.

anyway it''s all kind of nebulous and ''range-y'' but i figure if i consume around 1700-1800 per day and workout my 6x a day i should be good. and if i feel like i need to eat more, i will. i don''t really want to lose more weight necessarily, just want to continue to tone up and feel fit. i am pretty happy with what i am looking like now.

so hope that helps. in terms of ''tracking'' foods and calories, i use fitday.com since it''s just easy to use. also sparkpeople lets you do it too but i have never tried it. i do like their message boards though, lots of people there with lots of great suggestions on things like snacks, cool songs to listen to etc.

heather, definitely do the jump rope, it burns, as ms monarch found out...hehee. jumping jacks are kind of similar for me and i like that it works my arms too, i keep them tight and move them up and down pretty quickly when i do the jacks so it''s full body workout. i can feel it in my shoulders typically.

ms lizzie, did you see that i am doing your bootcamp workout once a week at home?! i love it!! i added a bit more cardio for me to really feel the burn but i really like it. it''s great to watch one of my crappy tv shows and workout to when greg is out running or running an errand or something on the weekend.

Rod, I LOVE Simply Sleep, I really think it is the best OTC when you''re in a sleep pinch! My Dh and I have had a small bottle of it for about six months and use it on occasions when we know we must get our rest. I find if I take the recommended dosage about half an hour before I know I need to be sleeping and read a bit, it really helps me fall asleep. We probably use it about once or twice a month...

Good job on the 3 workouts in a row! I''m, as always, impressed! You and Mara need to start a gym, I''m tellin'' ya! I think you should call it "Rod and Mara''s Diamond Club" or something way less cheesy, LOL! Seriously, though, you are both very inspiring.

So, I went to the gym tonight and did the hill program again...I actually upped my incline (couldn''t tell you what number as I really don''t pay attention, I just knew I wanted a bit more cardio), and I was huffing and puffing through the last 20 minutes of the 30 minute program. I was already sore from the k-box class from last night, and this really had me feeling some "pain." I came home and did a couple k-box moves for DH and he felt my gluts and was like "honey, they''re already so much tighter, I love it!" Now THAT is motivation, folks!

Anyone see the news about the e-coli scare with bagged spinach tonight? I just noticed an article on my homepage at home (yahoo), stating that the Midwest states pretty much need to take care to wash any and all pre-bagged spinach because they don''t know the origin of the e-coli bug which has affected like 20 people in WI. I live outside Chicago, and just ate some bagged spinach (although I steamed it first) two days ago...I feel fine. FYI, I guess.

Sounds like everyone''s day went pretty well...I am going to the gym again Saturday at noon for my first yoga class. I plan to go earlier actually and either do time on elliptical or the treadmill. I''ve never done yoga before so this will be my test to see how flexible I am!

Take care!

Just for those who want to know, BMR or basal metabolic rate (which is basically the amount of calories that your body burns just living, aka not including physical activity) can be calculated using 2 different methods. (remember BMR is just an estimate, everyone is slightly different)

METHOD 1:

1.) Figure out your weight in Kilograms (2.2lbs/kg)
ex. If your weight is 150 lbs you weigh 68.18 kg
2.) Figure out what your body burns per hour :
a.) Women burn 0.7 calories per kilogram per hour.
ex. 0.7 x 68.18 = 47.73 kcal/hr
b.)Men burn 1.0 calories per kilogram per hour.
3.) Multiply multiply you kcal/hr by 24 (hours in a day) and you will get your BMR.
ex. 47.73 x 24 = BMR of 1145.52

METHOD 2:

1.) Estimate your ideal body weight (IBW) in pounds
a.) Women IBW: 100lbs for the first 5 ft. in height + 5lbs per inch above 5 ft.
b.)Men IBW: 106lbs for the first five feet in height + 6lbs per inch above 5 ft.
2.) Multiply you IBW by 10 for your daily estimated BMR.

** You can roughly estimate you total calorie expenditure for the day by calculating Activity factor x BMR

ACTIVITY FACTOR (AF) CHART:

Activity..................................................................................................AF
Lying in bed all day..................................................................................1.00-1.29
Mild activity- normal routine, no exercise.....................................................1.30-1.49
Moderate activity-1 hr of aerobic exercise...................................................1.50-1.69
Heavy activity- 2-4 hours of aerobic activity.................................................1.70-1.99
Rigorous athletic training..........................................................................2.0 and above

Hope this helps!

Ok I have just finished my workout, 25 treadmill, 20 elliptical and 20 mins on the gym machine!!! Hubby and I had a good session last night - my familiarization lesson. So this morning I was able to do some exercises on it. My weekly routine will look like this:

Mondays - 45 mins cardio then 20 - 25 mins gym

Tuesdays - 50 mins cardio

Wednesdays - 45 mins cardio - 20 mins gym >
Thursdays - 50 mins cardio

Fridays - 45 mins cardio - 20 mins gym <>

Weekends off.

So hopefully that little lot should whip me into shape fast! I need the toning exercises for sure, they definitely worked for you Mara and you have had a great result from them.

Well, I didn''t do a treadmill workout last night. I have been feeling really tired lately even though I''ve been going to bed early. So, I''m just going to give the running a rest from now until Sunday. That way my legs will be fresh. The weather is lousy anyway, so I won''t be able to get an outdoor run in, and I''d much rather do that than run on the treadmill. Boy, I have all kinds of rationalizations, don''t I?!? Anyway, counting the hours until the 13 miles of torture!

Have a good weekend, everyone!

Thank you! I did have a wonderful nights sleep. I actually overslept and was late for work, but a good night''s sleep is often a rare thing for me, so I felt I was entitled to take advantage of it. And I will from now on call you Heather and am glad to know your name and be your friend!

Doing great Lorelei!!!! I''m so proud of how hard you''re working and what you''re doing for your lungs. Isn''t it just the most wonderful feeling to feel the air going in and out of your lungs without any wheezing. Those who have never smoked wouldn''t get this, but I''m betting you do. And for me, when I''m running or pushing really hard on the elliptical and I start breathing harder (which feels so good), I take mental note of how good it feels and remember that I will NEVER have another cancer stick again in my life!!! Isn''t today like 2 months for you? I''m just shy of 14 months now.

You Go Lorelei!!!!!!
