Wedding band made too small.

Hi,

I had a beautiful engagement ring made in a size 4 . The ring was custumed made during the warmer months. It fit perfectly and in the colder temps it is a little loose. It does not slip off due to my rather large knuckle .

I went back to the same shop to have a custume band to match . I was only going to do the half enternity with micro pave to match my engagement ring but it was suggested to do the full so if it spins it will not show metal on the other half.

The wedding band was made in platinum with a full eternity micro pave design . I agreed to go smaller in the wedding band to a 3.75 and was concerned with it being tight in the summer months . I agreed so it would maybe help my engagement from spinning when temperature is colder. On the receipt we requested a 3.75 . On returning to pick up the custume made ring we were informed it was made into a 3.50. I tried it on and it did go on but after wearing for 30 minutes just to uncomfortable and really difficult to remove. My knuckle was raw from removing.

My fiancé is very upset that we requested a ring made in a certain size and were given it in a size smaller. I went back the next day to request a size bigger . They claim they can resize it by scarsping it out and that it will still be strong . We are disappointed and upset that already we are having it resized . We thought. 10 -20 years this might be something we would need to do with weight gain but not now.

Is the shop telling the truth that the platinum eternity band can be resized without compromising the strength and the micro pave . Should we tell the shop we want a refund due to them not making it in the size we requested in email and on the receipt and work order . Was this done to harvest extra platinum for the shop. We really don’t understand why and want to know what we should do .

Thanks!

I am sorry about the trouble you are going through.

A full eternity can’t be resized and definitely not the way the shop is recommending.

You were given a different size band and that is a sufficient enough reason to request a refund or a remake at their expense.

Regarding the size, size 4 is what your ring finger is in the summer months, that is what your ring size is. Once you get a replacement/band remake I would get it at least in size 4 and maybe even 4.25 depending on how much your fingers change in the summer months. Once you stack rings, the two or more rings together will feel much tighter than one ring in the given size.

For example, I am size 5.25 in the cold months. 5.5 is a solid medium and many of my rings are that size. However, if I stack multiple rings together, I get at least 5.75 or 6.

Can you please share a picture of your engagement and wedding rings?

I would be very annoyed! :x2 It should not be difficult to make a ring an exact size as requested. As it is a full eternity, I suggest asking them to remake it correctly as "scraping it out" may weaken the structural integrity of the ring. :snooty: In my experience it's best to have it made as a 3/4 eternity and not too tight and fingers do change size slightly over the years.

I would request a full refund and have it remade in a size 4.

Scraping it out also means you would have paid for metal that you ultimately didn't receive. I'm so sorry this happened to you but they should remake it from scratch to the size you ordered.

Easy decision for me....

Sorry Mr. Jeweler, I thought I needed a size 4 when we initially came in. You talked me into a size 3.75. You actually made and gave me a size 3.50. It's too small, uncomfortable and I am not satisfied. More importantly, it's not what was agreed upon and what I paid to receive. I don't like your resolution to fix and I certainly wouldn't pay for it. I would want you to remake the ring. Worse yet, even if you agreed to remake I am not sure that I trust you would actually remake and not try to resize.

All this makes me frustrated & sad. Rather than risk damaging this working relationship further, I feel the only logical resolution is for me to return the ring and you refund my money immediately.

Tell them to make a new one 4.25 or 4.5

Thank you so much for the replies . We just emailed them and are requesting a full refund . I really have lost trust in them on this. I have numerous emails with my concerns about not going too small and to go even smaller than agreed upon was shocking . We have the receipt with the size the band was to be made in. I feel they made a mistake and are just going do say anything to not take responsibility..

Sorry you are going through this @NYCPARIS100, but I really think you are making the right decision.

I sensed there was trust issues which is why I suggested just getting a refund and starting over. Once trust is lost, you will never be truly happy.

What major metro area is close to you? Maybe we can recommend someone local or if you don't mind working through email, phone and shipping there are some great jewelers that can handle this.

David Klass from Los Angeles is who I used to custom make my fiancee's ring. Great pricing and excellent work!

Thank you so much for your response we are in NYC. Thank You!

Have you reached out to Yuketiel @ ID Jewelry in NYC yet?

I know they can do custom work, plus they have a large selection of designer bands meaning you may not have to go custom, etc to get what you want. Make sure you let them know that are a PS member and expect PS quality stones and quality.

No we have not . Waiting to see the response we get with my current wedding band . I just turned in the ring a few days and now after rally getting more info have just sent a request to refund the band . I told them we not comfortable with the resizing after thinking it over and getting more information about the ability to resize without weakening the band. .
Will update what the shop decides to do i hope they realize that we will not happy and it is not worth it to not give us the refund . You all are so correct on not trusting them with the option of making a new ring . I really would not feel comfortable with them claiming a brand new ring will be made . Thanks so much for the detailed information and encouragement on what to do .

Hi @NYCPARIS100. Just checking in with you to see what was going on and if myself or others might be able to help any further. Fingers crossed this turned out well for you, and you got a full refund. :cool2:

The reply we received was that the ring was structured to withstand resizing . They said it would stress the ring to go smaller but resized bigger was fine. We were not happy with their reply. We were informed that they had already resized it within a day of me dropping it off.

They claimed they reduced the size from the original 3.75 for a reason when we said this must have been a mistake. My eyes rolled to back of my head on that part of the reply . My fiancé is pretty annoyed he said it’s like buying a brand new car thst was in an accident a few hours later and rebuilt .

If we had not had a great prior relationship with this shop we would have refused the ring the day we went to pick it up and said sorry this is a 3.50 not a 3.75 as listed on the receipt and what we agreed to. This ring is too small. We would have had a complete new ring made or called our credit company to dispute this.

We think they made a mistake and were rushed since this was during the month of December. When I had my engagement ring made I tried on the wax casting . They never called me in for one with the wedding band. If they would have the mistake in sizing would have been noticed and resized correctly. The only reason I even agreed to the 3.75 and not the 4 was because my engagement ring will spin in the colder months. We were going to just to a half pave band like my engagement ring but the shop suggests we do the full so if it spins not as noticeable so why make us do that when you went down to a 3.50 instead of the 3.75. At this point I would have been better off ordering a half pave online and saving a lot of money . My wedding band in platinum was close to $2,600 with tax. I could have ordered a band online far cheaper and had the correct size as well . We paid a premium for a custume band only to have it weakened before even wearing . My fiancé wants to make sure we have a shop that will honor the work they did on making my engagement ring . The shop claims lifetime warranty on replacing the pave and structure of my rings . My engagement ring is beautiful and really well made and the wedding band now that it is resized looks the same just a little smaller. The shop did show me a non custume ring and mine still looks much thicker but still disappointed in them not making the ring in the size we agreed upon originally.

I hope someone learns from our situation. Please refuse a ring if they are not what you ordered or agreed to. We could have pushed back but my fiancé wants them to honor the work they claim they do on all rings. We had a total of 3 rings in platinum. One diamond engagement ring and two wedding bands . We spent a significant amount of money in a 1.5 year time frame. We do not buy jewelry usually so this was a major purchase.

I’m so happy and thankful that I will be getting married to my best friend in a few months and that we have our health. We are annoyed but in the end we have each other and a lot of people would love to have this as their biggest problem . We both want to move on from this and hope the shop does honor their promise to always take care of rings they make.

Thank you all for such helpful replies . We also contacted local jewelers and most recommended starting over and building a new ring as well.

Thanks again!!!
