Wedding Band Converted To Engagement Ring?

Hello, I've viewed the forum in the past but finally decided to create an account to seek the advice of the members of this forum. I made a terrible mistake and had my wedding ring lost and/or stolen while on vacation. Long story short I didn't have any insurance and no way of recovering my losses. I feel sick and terrible. My husband is really upset at me due to the fact that we married young and he saved up a couple of years to pay for it. My idea is to take my wedding band and have a jeweler put a setting on it and then put a loose diamond in. My original engagement ring was a 1.48 tiffanys solitaire and the wedding band was the matching platinum band. I would like to use the band because it has sentimental value to us both. So my question is, can a jeweler take my band, and place a setting and diamond on it? Thanks for the advice.

No one can answer that without seeing your band. I would take it to a jeweler and see what they think your options are. I don't believe Tiffany would put a head on one of their bands but I guess you could call them and ask. It might just be cheaper to buy a new e-ring.

ETA: I'm really sorry you lost your ring. I lost my e-ring last year and it was horrible. I feel your pain.

I am so sorry you lost your ring, I would be heart broken. This is why we have the thread for stand in rings on vacation (not putting you down, just showing those who wonder why we do it). I hope you can work out the new head!

I'm so sorry you lost your engagement ring. That must be so upsetting. I can't speak to converting the wedding band, but just wanted to check with you whether you carried home owners insurance at all. Even if the ring wasn't insured separately you might be okay. Our home owners insurance policy covers jewellery up to $10,000. I wish you the best of luck!

If it's a knife edge band, they can probably cut it and solder in a head of some sort. But you may wind up needing the ring sized bigger or smaller. A basket type head might work better than a Tiffany-type prong head, because the shank for a Tiffany type head has pointed tapered ends the go into the head and also is built up a bit in height at the shoulders, usually. If the jeweler cuts the wedding band, you will have a circular shank with straight ends, and there will be no built-up height at the shoulders. Study the pics of the Tiffany rings and the copies of them.

You might be happier keeping the band as wedding band and just getting a new solitaire setting for the diamond.

If you have a flat or half-round or comfort shank wedding band, usually a jeweler can drill a hole and mount any style of peg head in it.

A couple of years ago a local jeweler did almost what you describe. I was given a RHR by my grandmother that was big and bulky (very 80s); they cut the head off it and soldered it to a wedding band for me to use as a temporary setting (the stone is now in a pendant). You could see the solder join, but it wasn't terrible.

I don't know that I'd want to alter a Tiffany band…I would probably set the diamond in an inexpensive solitaire setting and save for a reset.
