I spoke with my friend today and they have switched up their criteria a bit. I am now looking for a cushion or radiant cut diamond as square in shape as possible. Asscher or square emerald are also possibilities The budget for the ring is 2000 with a bit of wiggle room. This setting is pretty close to what he is looking for although I would love to give him a rose gold option at a similar price.

Of the cushions you posted, #1 looks weak, #2 looks bowtie/contrasty, #3 I would entertain. Shape is rather severe for a cushion but that should mean it looks bigger than a rounder cushion of the same dimensions.

Could you please explain what you mean by weak for option #1?
 
I expect it to have a lot of green and black under an ASET. It also looks really round, a round in a cushion halo would be the nicer option.
 
I prefer the cut of stone one , stone 2 is a dog ! stone 3 is cut pretty nice as well .
H-J colour is a little low for fancy cuts but if your ok with that ,
