Hey guys and gals,

I'm new to all this and I've decided to pop the question in the next couple of weeks. I've read way too much about diamonds prior to embarking on the journey, but in a way this has come to my disadvantage.

I currently live in Saudi Arabia and our choice of diamonds is limited, extremely limited. After learning about the "four C's" (which is the only thing salespeople know about here, and even that is limited), I dug deeper into crown, pavilion, table, and depth. I then went even deeper and started using the HCA as an elimination tool and that pretty much eliminated every single stone I've looked at.

All this has rather soured my diamond buying experience and I'm basically struggling to find anything half decent. What makes this worse is that I'm running out of time, and the sad truth is that I'm eventually going to have to settle for something that is not 100% what I wanted due to limited availability. To top things off, diamonds are not cheaply priced here either compared to NA

Originally, I wanted something with the following specs (willing to pay around 7-7.5K) :

Carat: 1.10 - 1.25
Color: F-G
Cut: Excellent
Clarity: SI1 (eye clean)-VS2

Of course, I found none of that and even if they do exist, they're HRD certified which I'm not willing to go with (I want GIA, which is EXTREMELY RARE and super over priced).

Yesterday however, I found a diamond (7.2K) with the attached specs. It has a nice spread for a 1.01 carat (as seen by actual measurements), but I'm afraid the crown angle is way to shallow (30%). I checked it out using the HCA tool and it seemed pretty decent for fire, scintillation, brilliance, etc. This diamond is prepackaged so I cannot open it until I buy it.

In person though, it looks quite good - it sparkles nicely (despite being packaged) and it has a "darker" overall look to it when looking dead center at it compared to the other one's I've seen. It doesn't have a specific dark spot, but the whole diamond has a "deeper" darker look (not sure if that's a good thing) compared to others I've seen that pretty much look like...glass.

Please any opinions on this would be greatly appreciated. What do you think of this diamond, and what would you do in my case?

Pictures were taken using my cell phone, but the darker look is apparent in the comparison photo.

HRD is ok. Can't really advise about what you have... your pictures aren't good enough for that, it does seem like the top one is less dark. However, glassy looking is bad.

HCA on it returns "good" for scintillation. I think you can do better.

Thanks for the reply Julie. The reason I didn't want to go with HRD because I've heard they're not as stringent in their tests as GIA is and I don't want the headache of having to guess "how would this rate if it was GIA certified?"

I know I can get much better, but finding anything here is proving to be a daunting task.

Do you have the option of buying online?

I did consider buying online prior to searching locally - this was a few weeks ago and I thought there would be good options here. Clearly, that wasn't the case and with less than 10 days left till she comes for a visit (from Canada) I'm afraid that is cutting it too close to the deadline.

The diamonds you are considering look dismal.

I'm not sure about international shipping times, but I'm sure that you could pay extra to have it arrive overnight or 2nd day air. A bit of advice, though: don't settle on a diamond you're that not comfortable with/don't love just because you're in a rush. It may seem like a good idea now, but I think you'll end up regretting it later. And I'm sure that she would rather wait a bit and get something amazing. :) That said, start looking on sites like James Allen, Good Old Gold, Whiteflash, Brian Gavin Diamonds, High Performance Diamonds, etc. Find the best combination of price, policy, and service. Look for an AGS 000 stone and/or one with a great looking ideal scope, post it here for a quick verification, and then order it. It shouldn't take long at all and you can rest easy knowing that it was money well spent. You can either purchase a setting locally and have the diamond set or purchase a stock setting from one of the vendors and they will set/ship it. If it has to be made or ordered, it will take longer.

BTW it doesn't have good spread. The spread is normal for a well cut one carat, and low for a diamond with 30.0 crown angle. the girdle is eating all the spread it should have. You might have just enough time, my tailor in China ships anywhere within 3-5 business days for 18$.

Thanks for the responses. Like I mentioned, the pictures don't do any of the diamonds any justice, especially the last one.

As for buying online, I've already spoken to James Allen and they mentioned the Diamond won't ship until the payment is clear (of course) and that takes around 3 business days for a wire transfer. They also won't ship to our neighboring Kingdom (Bahrain) but will ship to Dubai. I'm considering that option.

Meanwhile, here are some possible candidates, what do you think?

I couldn't find anything on GOG with the specs I wanted. I will continue searching. Thanks

First two look nice.

Keep import taxes in mind, they can eat into a budget quite a lot. Taxes and duties may differ if the diamond is loose or set.

I've spoken to my brother who lives in Dubai to try and find out more information regarding importing a loose diamond or a diamond ring. My GF resides in Canada and is only here on a visit. Apparently, there is a possibility where the diamond ring may be exempt from any customs because it will be considered an "import for re-export" item - basically, they take into consideration that the ring is going back out of Dubai.

This will buy me quite a bit of time as we are only going to Dubai the last 3 days (Nov. 21,22,23) of our trip, and that's where I initially intended to propose.

I'm driving over to Bahrain in an hour to go tour the market and see if I can find anything worth it there. I will keep updating this thread with my status. Thanks to all those who've helped :)

Update:

I didn't end up going to Bahrain as the bridge to pass over was packed. Instead, I've decided that I'm going to call customs tomorrow to find out the duty charges. If it is the 5% on the overall price, I'm going to order from James Allen either of the following diamonds after reviewing them with their Gemologist:

I'm personally leaning more towards the AGS one, what you guys think?
