Thank you for all your help so far PSc members!

Went to jewlery store and casually looked at rings and my gf loves the a jaffe swirl. Now I need a diamond! I need the ring in 4 weeks so need to buy either tomorrow or Tuesday.

Budget 15k ring and diamond
Cut ideal or signature ideal

Color f, g, h
Clarity vs 2

Ideally would like close to 1.5 ct with cleanest appearing to eye. I went to Michael c fina in nyc but live in Chicago.
Where should I get the diamond from? I need the ring delivered within 4 weeks. Thank you for all of your help!

Options:

Blue Nile
James Allen
Michael c fina
Trabbert and hoeffer Chicago
James and son Chicago

Does it have to be A Jaffe?

James Allen has a very similar setting for a very good price ( i love this one from JA actually)

http://www.jamesallen.com/engagement-rings/pave/14k-white-gold-enclosed-pave-halo-item-8100 ( plat still under 2k)

The JA one recommends you stay 1.25 and under
so if that was true, id go with this one

if it can go bigger, this could be eye clean

Actually was debating between blue Nile swirl pave, James allen, and a jaffe. The blue Nile one was said to not look as good as ja and a jaffe. The James allen will not let me have a stone larger than 1.5

Do you guys feel the James allen one is better? I need to act quick. My gf loves the swirl design and the a jaffe was the only one we have seen. This is the style she likes, the ja seems more delicate.

Thank you for the diamond help. Any other suggestions? I will choose a few and post here later tonight. Thanks everyone!

I like the look and the price of the JA one better.

What I would do first is go over to JA and ask if it can go bigger. All there rings have size allotments, but I've seen them go above and below their limits, so I would ask if it could go higher.

Those are the JA ones I like, but you've got to nail down a setting first, as the JA and A Jeffe one have quite a difference in price.

Personally, I like the A Jaffe one better. I'm not a huge milgrain fan, so it's all in what look you're going for! Good luck!!

You need to stick with the one she told you she wants. I think it is risky to switch to a different setting when you haven't seen it, especially with a setting that is more distinctive like this one. You need to find out from the jeweler that sells A Jaffe the size range for that setting. Then you need to buy the diamond before ordering the setting. In fact, find out if the jeweler sends the diamond to A Jaffe to set. James Allen is going to be slower because you might have to wait a couple of days for idealscope images. I would recommend Good Old Gold and WhiteFlash who have stones in stock and they provide all the images. You are likely going to be looking at less than 1.5 cts (with the specs you listed) with that setting to stay in budget. How much is the setting?

The JA one and the AJ (see what I did there lol)
Are very very similar. I'd give her a chance to see this JA one before dismissing it.

Haha! Yes, he can certainly show her the picture tonight and see what she thinks. I adore milgrain, but I am not wild about it on such a contemporary style setting. She'd just have to see it to know whether she likes it as much as the other.

You're right. I'm kind of keen on the millgraining. Make it look a bit more sweetheart vs contemporary. But that's personal preference. Maybe they could do it without?

Who knows. I just know he wants close to a 1.5ct. Which will be hard if he has to spend 4k on a setting. Kwim?

I have purchased many, many diamonds and completed jewelry pieces from this Chicago company and would recommend them. Their website is not impressive aesthetically, but their information is good, and the diamonds are beautiful in person--but the pictures are not! Also, a nice trade-up policy. I usually work with Stan Perkins. I have gone back to this company for 15 years. I love them, because they actually encouraged my dh to shop around and ask the pertinent questions to other sellers. Only people with a superior product do that. :). If you want to see diamonds in person and you're in Chicago, I would give them a call.http://www.mmartinjewelry.com

OP, I am so glad your FF got to see the A. Jaffe ring! It's absolutely beautiful! Of course I haven't seen either of the BN or the JA settings in person, but I can attest that the AJ is substantial, yet delicate and extremely well made! Also, AJ uses a white gold alloy that doesn't have to be rhodium plated a lot -- if at all (this is a definite plus!!). I really think she'll love the AJ ring... oh wait! You already know she will!!

Can't wait to see the end product!!
P.S. Don't know how your FF feels about having a custom fit (curved) band or if she likes a little gap, but this setting looks AMAZING with a straight band!! It really makes the unique spiral shape stand out.

Thank you msop04!! You mentioned this and it is the only reason we went to see it in NYC. You made a huge impact on my decision!

Alright so- I have called a jewler in Chicago and will go see the ring instore on Tuesday to see the ring again, hopefully there is no issues with accommodating a ring 1.3-1.5 ct.

Now thank you for the diamond choices. This is my top 3:

I am leaning towards the 1.307. Thoughts? vs the 1.32 you guys mentioned in the above posts.
M budget is 15k total for the ring and band.

Now they said it may take 4 weeks for this to be done. I need to have the ring shipped to the store and I am praying I can have it before christmas or before dec 27th. What other costs will I incur at the jeweler. Thank you!! Getting so close.

I love the 1.30 H VS2 ACA stone! I didn't post them all but wanted to show you the range of prices for stones close to your specs. I have ACA diamond earrings and they are beautifully cut stones, so you cannot go wrong! I also think 1.30 is a great size in that particular setting! It will look big with the halo! What size is her finger?

You will probably have a setting fee (Likely around $100-200). You need to ask and be sure that AJ doesn't require that they set the stone to honor their warranty. I am always worried about local jewelers setting diamonds in designer settings because prong work surely does vary in quality.

You will also need to have the diamond covered by insurance as it is being set. This can be done through Jeweler's Mutual as long as they have the diamond and setting information.

Perfect. Just spoke to WF and they will see if they can get the A JAFFE ring for me so I do not have to go through 2 vendors. They do not list them on their website. Her ring size is 6- hoping the 1.3 is big enough- the difference in width between the 1.5 and 1.3 is 4mm (2 thin sheets of paper) which will be hard to discern to the naked eye.

I am praying that they are able to get the A Jaffe and set it so I do not have to worry about it. I do not see anyone on PSc that has received a A Jaffe from WF.

Thanks for the information on the setting fee. I will see what the warranty situation is with A Jaffe and then get insurance. If WF does not sell the A Jaffe ring..will be stressed to see if they can get the ring back to me in time.

So guys-- the 1.3 is the best option for my price range? Would anyone recommend anything else?

Thanks so much!!!

Don't second guess the diamond. It is top cut quality and in-stock, so I wouldn't even give that a second thought with your short time frame. I almost suggested asking WF if they could get the setting, but I didn't since you sounded like you were going to get it locally. While they do not carry that brand, many times a jeweler can still order a single setting from a company even though they don't carry their whole line. Hopefully they can, because that absolutely would be the BEST case scenario! Good luck and let us know!

You're so welcome, OP! I have been in love with that setting since I first tried it on -- I'm so glad that a PS member is going with it (and I can't wait to see photos!!)... I love the WF 1.3 stone you listed!
