Long term lurker here and thanks in advance for all the help you offer.
I'm about a month out from proposing. I've worked with a local jeweler here in Chicago on a simple solitaire setting, with a slightly pinched shank reaches a white gold/platinum 4 prong head.
Two Questions -
First, is the slight pinching of the shank a classic, timeless look. My thinking is that the narrowing effect will showcase the diamond better. Also, do I need to go with double prongs for a 2.5 carat+ stone. Finally, will platinum prongs be a stronger setting?
Secondly, where I'm really hoping you can help. I've been to a number of brokers here in Chicago looking at loose stones. My novice eye is having a tough time determining what is really different between the stones beside the size. I'd also love to avoid a 10% tax. Can you help me locate a few 2.5 + carat brilliant cushion cuts with a budget of $18k? I'm looking for great value and a very respectable stone with will catch a look or two.
