A164161B-1FD5-4FD0-9174-421671F8BFFB.jpeg I plan to upgrade my current diamond. You all were so helpful 10 years ago when I found my baby, I’ve got that itch for an upgrade. My round is 3.33 cts. with a custom halo. James Allen set it for me in a Danhov. Because the halo was built around the diamond, I’m not sure if it’s best to try to sell the ring as a whole or have the stone taken out and sold as a loose stone? I’m assuming unmounting would severely damage the setting? I love my setting but want to move to a 5ct and will find out if JA can just take off the current halo and basket and attach to a larger one. 3.33 is not a typical size for a stone so I’m thinking I will just be at a loss for the setting but would love any suggestions on what you would with unmount vs. mount. Thanks a million :)

If you are upgrading your stone through JA, then it wouldn’t make sense to try to sell the entire as that would likely lead to taking a loss on the ring.

I would upgrade the stone through the original vendor and see if the setting can be reworked by someone like DK.

Happy New Year!

I agree with Emeraldsaremyfavorite. Try to sell it as a ring. If no luck then unmount it. Its a large(expensive) stone so may be difficult to sell
on your own. May have to consign it with someone.

Did you get the stone through JA or just the setting? Still a little confused about your situation.

thanks for the help! The stone I purchased loose from USA Certed. They don’t take back for upgrades. The setting was from James Allen and they mounted. I think I’ll go with what you said and list for sale as a whole first, then consign, then unmount. Halos still seem pretty popular so maybe someone will like having the whole thing already done. I’ll see if I can take it to a local jeweler to see if they can buff up platinum to make it bright and shiny again. Thanks for the help!
