Hi—this is my first post here, and I was hoping to hear your seasoned input. We will be getting wedding bands soon, and I was wondering if any of you had advice on what kind of band would work well with my engagement ring. The ring is platinum (10% iridium) with a 1ct diamond, size 6, width 2.4mm tapering to 1.8, band height about 2 mm. It’s low-set but with open gallery, and bands will sit flush with it if the edges are thin (like a domed band). I’m curious about what style, thickness, metal you’d think would be nice with it.

Some info: I’m open to platinum or 14k yellow gold, though I heard mixing metals was not recommended for durability of the rings. Does this include different platinum alloys? I am hard on my hands, so I would want a band with no stones or with stones that are very securely set. Either new or used is fine. I like unique, vintage engravings, though I’d worry about the durability of engravings with modern cast rings. My budget is up to $450.

Thanks in advance for your advice! Photos included below.

Congrats on the engagement! Do you have pics of the profile (side view) of the setting? That would help in terms of suggestions.

I would stick with platinum for consistency. I prefer when bands sit flush, but that's just my personal preference. I would either do a plain plat band or one with diamonds (small ones rather than anything too big or distracting). But if you're really hard on your jewelry then a plain band might be best.

Thank you! I like the plain one you posted! I might worry about it bending if it’s only 1.15mm thick though.

The plain one comes in almost every thickness. 1mm, 1.5, 2, 2.5, etc. So you can pick whichever thickness you want.

Ah, I meant depth. For the 2mm width ring, it lists a depth of 1.15mm. I’d be afraid of bending that.

What do you mean about bending? You won't bend the "height" of the ring itself unless you smash your hand into something downwards. Thin bands (e.g. thin widths) are the ones to be concerned about.

Hmm, I have a thin (in depth not width) 14k gold ring that deformed from a circle to oval shape I assumed because it’s really thin (~2mm wide but less than 1mm deep). I thought I heard that about a 1.6 mm depth was about the minimum for a 2mm wide platinum band for structural integrity, but maybe that’s for gold.

Very true. Also can not compare between platinum alloys in terms of tensile strength, which varies as low as 40,000PSI (which is probably around what 14K yellow gold would be) up to 64,000PSI. I use my hands heavily, and I would be sad to bend a ring again if it weren’t hefty enough, but it would definitely open up my options if 1mm was okay.

What do you think the minimum thickness that’s reasonable for a cast 10% iridium platinum alloy band in 2mm width?

Given the profile I think you may actually have to go custom. I would also stick with a similar width and platinum, given the rings will be touching. The cut of your center stone and reflected color appears different than a typical diamond.

Thank you—the diamond is an F-color and “excellent” cut (60/60 and different looking) by the GIA, but it looks blue outside thanks to the strong fluorescence. I’d prefer to not go custom due to price, but I see your point.

Have you considered a knife-edge band or one with sloped sides?

Or a twist one could sit under the basket?

Wow, these are so nice!I think these would work. I especially like the first one! Thank you!

oh wow !
i love it
and congratulations on your engagement
i would have just a plain band, no embellishment but that'd not really the modern way
that ER is the star !

I echo the idea of a knife edge. Either with an angular shape or a curved slope. Your ering is quite architecural in shape but has softened edges so you can do any style really. It os a lovely setting, i love nsew prong positionings.

Thank you all—I’ll be on the lookout for something platinum, knife-edged (or at least thinned our on the edges) about 2-3mm wide. You all are so helpful and kind!
