I don't mind paying more taxes depending on how they spend it. I have no problem with our state spending on educating our kids and senior citizens. I just don't like for them to spend it on the able to work bodies.

:twisted2: Don’t worry. California soon won’t have enough money to spend on able-bodied people. Like you and your wife, for instance. I think you said she worked for the state and expect to retire from there? I hope you aren’t expecting (what would soon be seen as generous) benefits to remain. This whole starve the government approach has consequences. Enjoy!

The Republican philosophy as explained by Orin Hatch.

Mere hours after passing a tax reform plan that costs $1.5 Trillion, Orin Hatch explains why the Republicans in the Senate can’t get it together to fund CHIP, the Children’s Health Insurance Program:

Nobody believes more in the CHIP program than I. I invented it. We’re gonna do CHIP. There’s no question about it in my mind, and it’s gotta be done the right way. The reason CHIP’s having trouble is we don’t have any money anymore.

I have a rough time wanting to spend billions and billions and trillions of trillions of dollars to help people who won’t help themselves, won’t lift a finger, and expect the federal government to do everything. Unfortunately, the liberal philosophy has created millions of people that way, who believe everything they are or ever hope to be depend on the federal government rather than the opportunities that this great country grants them.

I think Orin Hatch is referring to welfare recipients, not the children, as takers, but he’ll sacrifice the 9 million children’s health insurance to punish the “welfare queens”. And, of course, to give a $1 Trillion tax cut to corporations and billionaires — because we really really had to do the tax cut ASAP; the children can wait a little longer.

I can respect the fact that some people don't value helping the poor/needy as much as others, and there can be constructive debate around where to draw the line between deserving and taking advantage. I personally draw the line with larger room for error I suppose because I'd rather help someone who doesn't deserve it than leave someone out who really needs it.

HOWEVER how can the same people who chafe against helping the poor/needy turn around and justify corporate welfare and handouts to the wealthy? There is no way to reconcile that.

I look for humor wherever I can find it nowadays, so please bear with me. MSNBC announced today that there are now zero percent African-American senior staff in The White House. I honestly do not know if that was tongue in cheek. How can one know with the Trump White House? At any rate, this was excerpted from an article in "The New York Times". (By the way, The White House denies reports that Ms. Newman was heard screaming at General Kelly and seen being escorted off the White House grounds by The Secret Service.)

"What Omarosa Did Best: Get Fired"

"We don’t know what exactly Omarosa Manigault Newman did at the White House, but we do know the number one skill she brought to the table — being fired.

The Trump administration clearly looked at Doug Jones’s victory in Alabama on Tuesday and decided to reach out to black female voters by firing one. This is consistent with Mr. Trump’s previous attempts to bond with black voters by not allowing them to live in his apartment buildings….

In fact, Mr. Trump is probably sitting around right now drinking Diet Coke, watching TV, and dreaming up a plan to make Jeff Sessions hold every black voter’s hand in the voting booth while whispering sweet nothings about the Ku Klux Klan.

When Steve Bannon got fired, people cheered. When Anthony Scaramucci got fired, people laughed, because most of us have had bouts of flu that lasted longer than he did. But now the Trump administration is giving me a chance to relax during the stressful holiday season by firing someone I can feel neutral about.

Ms. Newman’s official title was director of communications for the White House Office of Public Liaison, but she was better known by a title that reflected the breadth and depth of her job responsibilities: director of nothing. Her firing puts the White House in a real jam. Who in the administration is going to do nothing now?

Traditionally the position of director of nothing in a presidential administration falls to the vice president, whose main responsibility is standing around waiting for the president to die, but Mike Pence left an N.F.L. football game a couple of months ago, so his resume’s too full. Given that Ms. Newman made the maximum White House staffer salary of $179,700 a year, it’s clear that director of nothing is too important a position to go unfilled.

Ms. Newman was theoretically supposed to do African-American outreach. Without her there, no one will do nothing to reach out to black people, which is a huge loss for everyone who was dedicated to Ms. Newman’s particular style of ignoring African-Americans.

Ben Carson ignores black people, but he doesn’t do it with the same level of intrigue. Now Mr. Trump’s going to have to celebrate Black History Month by issuing a few misspelled tweets and falling asleep in the middle of everything Ben Carson whispers without Ms. Newman there to do nothing next to the two of them.

Even though Ms. Newman didn’t do anything during her time in the White House, it would still feel weird if she didn’t write a book about it. Can’t wait for her upcoming memoir 'What I Did in the White House,' which reviewers will call 'a riveting collection of blank pages.'

Until then, we can have a good time imagining the blank goodbye cards the other White House staffers probably sent her after melting down in frustration that Hallmark doesn’t have cards that say 'why are you here.' ”

I'm really behind in this thread and will have to spend some time catching up. This article reminded me of the thread so I had to come and inquire. Which PSer(s) are responsible for this creative little gift to Mnuchin? Fess up!

Suspicious Package Addressed to Treasury Secretary Mnuchin Contained Horse Manure: Officials
Multiple law enforcement sources tell NBC investigations that officers unwrapped the box to discover it was filled with manure

A Los Angeles Department bomb squad responded to a Bel-Air neighborhood Saturday night due to a suspicious package addressed to Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin.

Someone in the neighborhood reportedly received a suspicious package addressed to Mnuchin, according to the LAPD. The package -- which contained horse manure -- was dropped off at a neighbor's house. It was cleared by investigators around 8 p.m.

The Secret Service was also involved due to the connection to Mnuchin.

Aerial footage from NewsChopper 4 showed officers investigating a large box wrapped in wrapping paper. Multiple law enforcement sources tell NBC investigations that officers unwrapped the box to discover it was filled with horse manure.

A Christmas card was also inside the package, making some reference to Mnuchin and President Donald Trump, multiple sources told NBC.

The card did not contain a threat, but there was some kind of negative reference to Trump's $1.5 trillion tax overhaul, signed on Dec. 22, according to multiple sources.

No evacuations were reported, but Bel Air Road was closed due to the investigation.

Trump doesn’t know the meaning of the word diplomacy. I wonder how many times Tillerson called him a f#$&ing moron last night.

We will see if your opinions change when bombs are headed toward your family @Dancing Fire . Our lunatic is every bit as dangerous as the one in North Korea. :angryfire:

We don't want or need anything from North Korea, China is doing a better job managing their leader. This is SO unnecessary! Why provoke someone who is isolated and highly paranoid?
I just keep thinking of this quote by Steven Colbert: "All this time we have been worried that the next war will be caused by artificial intelligence. Turns out the real danger is natural stupidity."

A smart logical person would ignore Kim. I can’t wait to hear how Sarah Sanders Huckabee tries to spin this tweet,

Possible internecine war between Bannon and Trump (and their corresponding supporters)?

Oh, how I wish I could believe that. But the reality is that we're talking about two unbalanced juveniles in adult bodies throwing rocks at each other. The world is not a playground.
