I have a 2.18 I VS2 with an Israel cert my wife is happy with. I bought it from a New York wholesaler. My lifetime friend (who is a jewler put me in touch with the dealer and he looked at 3 stones for me and considered this the best for the cost.) Long story short he said in 2010 the stone is a GIA J or K SI 1. He told me to buy it...Now I don't think I can trade up because of the cert. Will a dealer look at the stone and ignore the Israel cert or am I doomed? I paid 13k for the stone. My jewler friend says it's really nice and ignore the paper. I don't want to lose my shirt trading up, but I think I'll buy GIA next time around... Any opinions?

Why don't you have have it certified by GIA? they have an office in the city I am pretty sure.. this will indeed solve your problem.

For a stone that size my first thought is get a GIA report on the stone and go from there.
If it is potentially a GIA ex cut even more so.
Are there any angles or percentages on the EGL report?
If so post them.

I agree ..as an owner of EGL Israel 2.41 studs I agree. If I ever get around to it I will GIA certify my stones so that I know the truth. When I bought them I also felt that although the certificates says F and G that they were J....But since i'm in NJ I will probably have them certified by GIA..

I bought this in Dec. 2010. I know little about diamonds and it doesn't look like my specs are too good? Do I have to take the stone out of the setting for a GIA report?

Don't look good.. :knockout:

Yes. You do have to take the stone out of the setting. GIA only grades loose diamonds.

Thanks. I might pass the gia report. If it doesn't come back a J or K I'll really be bummed. I thought I overpaid at the time, but if my buddy is accurate on the color and clarity then I guess its not so bad. A 2.18 K SI 1 gia stone sells for about what I paid for the egl... Wife likes it but asked about 3k diamond recently. Ouch!

The price you could sell it for if it gets GIA EX cut and there is a chance it will would be higher.
I cant find my facetware login at the moment to check it further the trade in amount could be a couple thousand higher with GIA paper even if it gets k-si1 if it gets EX.
Either way your going to take a loss on the deal but the GIA report could help you.
