So, here is the thing. My bf and I have been looking at engagement rings and thought we had decided on a rectangular modified brilliant that we both loved. When we returned to the store to visit the ring one last time before buying the ring, we were shown a beautiful cushion cut that we loved even more than the rectangular one! I had heard of cushion cut but had never seen one in person and my bf had never even heard of it. The salesman told us it is an older cut that is enjoying some renewed popularity of late. I like that it is a bit different, antique-y and not the ring you see on every blushing bride''s hand, but my bf is worried that we would be buying an edsel - that is, he is concerned that they stopped making the cushion cut because more modern cutting techniques and tools produced "better" stones and that made the cushion less desirable and less valuable. Any idea how I can show him a Good Housekeeping Seal of Approval for the cushion cut, so we can both feel good about buying the ring?

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

cushions are very very special but findnig a good one is hard--most look like lumpy potatoes. they run deep and thus you often get a smaller looking stone than what you are paying for..................they are the HOT trend of the moment and "everyone" wants one but your bf has a point. if you ever need to sell it and its not cut well then it wont be nearly as liquid as a more popular and consistent shape......................i was in search of a great cushion for months..................no longer

Hi Lucy and welcome to Pricescope!!

You will want to do a search on this forum for Cushion cut diamonds. Here are some of the links to other threads concerning Cushion cuts; MMM''s honker .

That should give you a good start! It is my understanding that the new "Modern Brilliant Cushion" cut is really beautiful and sparkly. The older Cushion cut is less brilliant, but lovely if you are into the more vintage look. Reena and MMM are the experts on the Modern Cushion, maybe they could comment!

what icelady said!

the fact is that they have NOT stopped making cushion cuts--you can absolutley find modern cut cushions in addition to the antique variety. the moderns stones ARE better cut in terms of brilliance than the antiques. (i happen to love the antique cushions as well, but it''s a different look. really a matter of taste.) they even make hearts and arrows cushions, as someone else may have said already!

of course, whether you want to go with a cushion vs. radiant is purely a personal decision--i think both are great (but obviously im a little biased as a cushion owner!). but i would definitely not rule out the cushion cut for fear that it''s been "phased out" or something like that. quite the opposite in fact!

I have to second reena and icelady. I orginally wanted a radiant, but after seeing some the modern cushions, I was hooked. They are normally cut deep, but you can find ones that aren''t. Personally, I liked that the modern cushons looked like the round brillant, obviously depends on the cut. It just depends. Good luck.
