I have not found anything else that i like...i have been back to see the ring twice....lol - i keep going back to remember what it looks like as well...and when i see it and other rings to make sure its what i want
i just love it .....
im going to continue shopping around ...but so far i have not seen anything else...
i have seen others but they are just not the same...

It sounds like you are really set on it being from Tiffs, go for it. Sure it costs more, but what is a little more money over a lifetime.

I personally am not a fan of the Etoile, but I love the solitaire and the legacy rings.

nerf, it sounds like you''re asking us to justify you paying top dollar for a luxury store purchase. You obviously love the Tiffany version of this ring so just go for it. You dont need to justify spending the extra money, as long as you have the extra money to spend...get what you love, so long as it''s in your budget! Enjoy...!

i agree with surfgirl (well-said!).

a few years ago when i began thinking about engagement rings, i decided i wanted the Etoile. i love that it is modern and beautifully designed. and that slight problem with the band thickness corresponding to the carat weight? i found the proportions of a .35-.50ct ring to be perfect for a size 5.5-6. the band was substantial in appearance but not too thick. a smaller stone would cost much less than a traditional setting, but it would have great PRESENCE. for me, the tiffany design/service, the elegant and modern design, and the lower price were all worth it.

long story short, i didn''t end up with the Etoile. my journey was sidelined by last-minute concerns about conflict diamonds and gold mining, and i ended up with a canadian stone in recycled gold. but the ring style was heavily influenced by my first love.

i think if the tiffany''s is in your budget, you should focus on getting the best stone for your money and wear that ring joyfully!
 
So, regardless of price, do you think it''s at all POSSIBLE to find a stone at Tiffany''s that is as well cut as some found on the internet? If someone did decide to purchase from Tiffany''s, would they just request to have several diamonds brought in, then run the numbers through on HCA to find a super-ideal cut?

thanks for that input....i know that a small stone is what i will need about a 0.3 - 0.4 bc of the tickness
i have been calling around so lets see what prices come up and i will definitely post for more input once i get the prices like i did last time.

even if i could find the prices, they would be over 4 years old! but judging from the prices you listed, i would guess that you could find a well-cut .30ct etoile H-VS1/2 for about $3000-3500?

i definitely think you should ask your sales associate at Tiffany''s to call in several rings along with their full specs. when you go to look at the rings, you should also ask if you can see them in daylight (even if it''s next to a window). don''t let them bully you into thinking that all Tiffany diamonds are the best. they''re always nice and chummy with me once they realize that i adore diamonds and have done a bit of my own research. i always feign ''some'' ignorance, but they know that they aren''t dealing with the average customer.

Get the #s from Tiffany and run them through the HCA to weed out, which will narrow down to the ones you want to evaluate, then take an Idealscope to Tiffany''s to evaluate the remaining stones in person.

If the HCA score is between 0 and 2, there is a darn good possibility that the stone will be a sparkler. I would not buy any stones that scores over HCA 2. Well, unless the Idealscope and ASET can back it up as a contender.

The other option is to find stones with these narrow specifications:
table 54-57%
depth 60-62%
crown angle 34-35
pavilion angle 40.7 to 41
polish and symmetry should be at least very good to excellent

On HCA I am going to go ahead and warn you that Tiff diamonds almost always lean to the "more fire"/"Younger people" diamonds part of the HCA scale. I don''t think the stones are purposely misscut or anything, I just think TIffs is putting an emphasis on fire. Therefore not all Tiff stones will grade out under 2. The one I bought was 2.6, however I am a long time subscriber to using the HCA as a weeder out and then using your eyes for the actual purchase. The 2.6 looked better to me in the window light then the 2 that graded under a 2. So always trust your eyes over HCA is my advice, if there is one they bring in that doesn''t score as well but looks better to you, go with it. BTW, irregardless of what HCA has said, I have yet to see a diamond in Tiffany''s or a Tiffany ring on some lucky girl''s hand that I didn''t consider beautiful and dazzling. Sometimes we just overthink things.
 
BTW, when I was looking then printed off the stats on like 8 different diamonds for me to look at, just ask them for it.

My Tiffany''s stone also came out to be 2.2 on the HCA. My sales person emailed me 5 or 6 gem reports and I ran the number on HCA, 2.2 is the highest. I was a little disappointed that the score is not higher, but when I saw it in real person I knew it didn''t really matter coz it looks fantastic. If you decide to go with Tiffany''s just ask them to sent you the reports.

You can take an idealscope with you to evaluate the stones that you physically see, but I don''t know if you have time to purchase one. It took me about a week to get mine. I purchased it from Dave Atlas (aka Oldminer).

Also, when we purchased the ring I didn't know anything about ideal scope and HCA. I didn't know the specifics until I got the certificate about a month after purchasing it (just that it looked very sparkly and pretty and fit our 3 Cs criteria!). When I plugged the numbers into HCA it got a score of 0.6, which I'm happy with. I would certainly recommend asking to see the certificate before purchasing the ring, but don't get too hung up on the numbers - as others have said, it's easy to overthink it!

There's lots of information around here about what the depth, table etc should be, and you can plug the numbers into the HCA for ones you're considering that fit your other criteria.
