The thread below has someone saying that the Tiffany''s Novo has a cushion brilliant cut that is patented by Tiffany''s. Is this true? Or is a cushion brilliant a cushion brilliant...

"the tiffany novo is a brilliant cushion, by the way :)

.. which is different from a cushion. the brilliant cushion shapes are patented by tiffany. other cushions don''t sparkle as much as round (aka brilliant) shapes do.. so this tiffany''s cushion was created to increase the sparkle factor. it''s basically a round shape on the bottom, cushion on top. it''s magnificent!!"

Also, I''m going to be going to a jeweler to have a replica Novo setting made. Just curious if anyone knows whats the best depth % for the Tiffany''s diamonds they use in the Novo. Any recommendations for a jeweler or diamond vendor in NYC, Boston or anywhere in between.

Hi magnus,

The link wouldn't work for me. I have heard the Novo is patented. I would recommend taking a trip to GOG in Long Island. Their service is second to none, and they carry a signature line of cushions that are to die for. They really put an emphasis on cut.

Here's a video Jon did on cushions/cushion brilliants. This may make things clearer for you.

And here's a video with some of their cushions in it.

Goodoldgold carries a square hearts and arrows stone which I understand to be the closest the Novo. it is indeed a patented cut so you be able to find that exact stone unless you buy it from Tiffany''s. Goodoldgold is not far from NYC and worth the train ride or drive over to see them in person. If you do decide to go be sure to call ahead and set up an appointment b/c they are known to get busy and it would guarantee you getting some quality time there.

The way the pavillion is cut on the novo is different from other Cushion Brilliants. I tried to find the thread but failed miserably, but someone posted one awhile back that shows the faceting structure of the Novo and other cushion cuts.

From what I recall, the novo''s pavillions aren''t all evenly spaced apart. They''re closer together at the 12,3,6,and 9 oclock positions, if you can visualize what I''m describing.

Thanks for the info! I'll def check out GOG in Long Island. How is the reputation for Engagement Rings Direct?

Has anyone had a setting made from GOG? In particular a replica of the Novo?

What exactly is an H&A stone? Sorry for the stupid question but I couldn''t find any good threads on it.

Here you go, this is from GOG's site.

And I think they could do a nice job of replicating the setting you want. They have done some very nice custiom work. Keep in mind though, that for copyright reasons, they cannot makle it exactly like the Tiff setting.

ERD has a great reputation for stones and settings. However, GOG is the only vendor I know of that sells the square H&A.

ERD and GOG are both fabulous vendors. Can''t go wrong with either.

Good to hear both are great vendors. I''ll be taking a look at them.

One final question. My gf has really expressed interest in the Tiffany Novo style ring. I know she likes the cushion cut but now I''m a little confused which would be best. Should I go with a cushion brilliant cut because she likes that diamond cut or the square H&A because of how she likes the Novo? Any opinions? Thanks again!

Would it be possible for her to look at regular cushons vs. square H&A on video to see which she likes? Or is this a surprise?

Ellen - That was a huge help! Thanks so much! Its going to be a surprise so I didn''t want to lead her on at all.

I''ll take a look at the square H&A vs. cushion in person and make a decision.

Really stupid question...obviously I''m new to all this but is the Tiffany Novo setting a pave or shared prong setting?

Ooh, I''m no expert on settings, but I''ll put a bug in the ear of a gal who is.

Ok, if it''s a surprise, that makes it tougher, because again, just like size, types of looks are personal. I know if it was me, I''d get the square H&A, because that''s what I really wanted on my upgrade! However, I couldn''t afford the size I wanted, so I went with a round again. In my dreams, a square with the sparkle of a round is perfect.

That''s what a square H&A is.

I don''t think you could go wrong with either one. And if all else fails, do a poll. You''ll get lots of input, and at least maybe general concensus!

And you''re quite welcome!

not a stupid question at all. the novo is 4 prong ..each tiny stone is held by 4 prongs. there are all sorts of terms used to describe this style. just make sure your custom jewelers has good pictures.

Thanks for the info about the setting!

After looking on GOG''s site, I''ve noticed that there are Cushion Square H&A, Cushion and Jubilee stones. What is a Jubilee cut? Is it similar to the other two?

Thanks again!

I guess I''m just a little concerned because this is a surprise. I know she loves the Novo but I''m wondering if the square cushion H&A looks very similar. Is the Novo cushion more square or rectangle...I''m heading to Tiffany''s this weekend to take a closer look when my gf isn''t with me. That''ll tell me if I''ll go with a square cushion (H&A or regular) or more of a rectangular.

Do most think that the Novo is a square cushion?
