Three-sided pave help

Hi all,

This is my first time posting, though I'll admit I have been lurking for a while. We are I'm the process of having my engagement ring custom made, and I am stumped on a couple technical things and measurements. To give you an idea of what we are having made, I would like a squared off (rather than rounded) three sided pave shank, with pave going up the four prongs, to hold my 3.02 carat round brilliant diamond. All of the edges will be finished with fine milgrain.

Let me stop here to ask that you all forgive me for using what is probably incorrect terminology several times in this post

I find the whole melee/pointers sizing thing to be a big confusing (I'm not really a math or decimals person). We decided that the width of the shank should be about 2.5mm wide, and possibly 2.5mm high/deep. Now, for the questions!

Those of you who have three sided pave shanks, what did you find the be your perfectly proportionate measurements for the shank?

If it's 2.5mm high, should it taper down at any point to be thinner? I'm picturing the shank sticking way out from the sides of the finger when viewed from the top.

2.5mm is still quite dainty. In order to place all the melee they will have to drill many many holes into the metal to seat the diamonds, this causes the shank to become less durable especially if it is too thin. We have seen cases where people have requested that the shank be thinner only to end up with broken and bent shanks and missing stones, which required that the ring be rebuilt all over again. At 2.5mm you ring will look very dainty on your finger...especially with a 3ct center stone.

Christina, thanks for your help. I will look into the width and see if we need to increase it from 2.5mm. Many if the rings I tried on (Michael B., Tacori) were 2.5mm wide, so that's what we were going off.

How, for the height or depth of the shank, is 2.5mm still smaller than normal? I have a pave band that is 3mm wide and only 1mm high, and it looks almost flat to me at times.

What are the measurements of everyone's three sided pave shanks? I would love to get an idea and see pictures, but maybe I'm in the wrong section of the forum

Hello! I just wanted to say that I LOVE the idea of a 3-sided pave Ering. I just want to add, have you thought about what type of wedding band you'd pair with it? Some things to think about - 1 side of that ring will always be up against the wedding band if you wear one. And there is the potential that the diamonds will scratch the band and the Ering metal will wear away as well. I think I've heard that soldering the rings together will help with that but then you'll never see that 1 side. Also, if you like the squared-off look, you can have 1 side without pave, that way you don't have to worry about any of that. Like I said, I do love 3-sided pave because you get sparkle from every angle. My wedding bands are knife-edge because then the above concerns don't apply as much. But the downside is that there isn't that row of diamonds on the top, though the rings still sparkle a lot regardless. Just some things to think about!! Keep us posted!

Yes, the wedding band will be two sided with the pave-less side touching the e-ring. I doubt I'll often wear both at the same time, but just to be safe for when I do...

I'm hoping someone out there can share the measurements (shank height/depth and width) of their three sided pave ring or eternity band.

My e-ring is 4mm wide and 3mm high, my pave wedding band is 3mm wide and slightly less tall though very near 3mm. My finger size is 4.5.

(I like the plain band between to give them some definition. I keep meaning to get a thin spacer but, eh, I like this look.)


(Sorry the profile looks whack here but for some reason I actually took these pictures after I had banged my hand and the stone had popped out, so the profile looks kind of whack because it IS.)










I don't find that it sticks out an annoying amount. You can see in pictures where my fingers are all closed that it DOES stick out, but basically the only times my fingers are that closed are when I'm taking a picture or my husband is holding that hand. It does taper in the back/palm-side, to be about 2.5mm wide and 2mm tall (I think... I didn't measure just made a wild guess), and imo that is where sticking out would decrease my comfort level while wearing a ring.

(Also as to the "finger fat" appearance in some of the pictures... my finger basically has that when I straighten it out all the way whether or not I have a ring on, but straightening it out all the way looks better in pictures. Sorry not sorry.)

Hi, hydelavilla! I'm just wondering what you decided to do about your engagement ring? Have you decided on a wedding band?

I actually just approved 2 new wedding bands to be made to match my engagement ring better! Like I said when I originally posted, I love the 3-sided pave look and, to be totally honest, I always wanted a look like that for my wedding bands. Now is the time that I can finally get my dream bands and I am so excited! I'm actually doing 2-sided pave, so that the sides up against the e-ring on each band don't scratch it. Fine millgrain will be added to all of the edging as well, and I'm doing 3/4 eternity.
