Thoughts on these diamonds?

I do not recognize the grading report on the second one so I would avoid it.

Stick to GIA XXX and AGS 000 stones.

Use the HCA tool under the Tools tab to check for stones that score under 2, which indicate angles that work well together.

Use the Pricescope search bar at the top of the forum. If you click the option for 'Excellent' HCA scores only, that will filter stones that have good light performance.

SI stones need careful vetting to ensure they are 'eye-clean' - you cannot usually buy them blind.

Make sure to check the Returns policies of where you are buying (if not buying from a Pricescope-recommended vendor) - good vendors will have a No Questions Asked returns period that costs you either nothing or minimal amounts (for shipping and insurance if buying online).

Hi all,

Just wanted to get your thoughts on the following two diamonds I'm considering for an engagement ring:
https://imgur.com/a/G7ePUSQ (1.34C, F, SI1)
https://imgur.com/a/bYkiqui (1.4C , H, VS2)

They are both priced in the $11-12K range. Thanks in advance!

1.34 F SI1: good proportions. Medium blue fluor has resulted in it likely being discounted and shouldn’t pose any problems transparency wise (again, need to see pics of actual stone). But SI1! Holy moley, the plot looks like it might have been on the borderline of being a SI2 (especially when one reads it with the comments on the report). Doing a search through virtual inventory online for a similar sized stone with medium blue fluor gives me a 1.30 D SI1 at just shy of US$7.8k. So I think this stone is a little overpriced.

1.4 H VS2: the report give you NO information to ascertain whether it actually is an “Idea Hearts & Arrows” stone (only gives dimensions but no proportions. Stone is also graded by a lab that most of us here would not have heard of. I also note that the CDL report says that it is inscribed with a pre-cert number. That alone gives me cause for concern as a well known lab (EGL, that very few in the market trust) did this for trade customers who would pay for a pre-cert and if the stone did not align with what the jeweller/cutter wants, they would just not bother to have it fully graded with report. The pre-cert is done by the National Gemmological Laboratory of Canada. Not one that a lot of us know of. Would not trust the lab report at all.

Edit: Similar sized H VS2-VS1 stones on virtual inventory are between US$7.5-9k.

NGLC report says this:
Report Number: 55790801
Carat Weight: 1.40
Date of Issue: 2019-03-05
Shape and Style: ROUND BRILLIANT
Clarity Grade: VS2
Color Grade: H
Cut Grade: IDEAL
Polish: EXCELLENT
Symmetry: EXCELLENT
Fluorescence: NONE
Measurements: 7.13 X 7.07 X 4.44
Table: 57%
Depth: 62%
Crown Height: 16%
Crown Angle: 35°
Pavilion Depth: 43%
Girdle: SLIGHTLY THICK To:
Girdle Condition: FACETED
Culet: NONE
Hearts and Arrows: YES
Laser Inscriptions: ETERNITY LOGO + 55790801

On those proportions, stone might be ok.

Thank you for the detailed reply! The jeweller did say they could get the GIA report for the second one for a cost of $150 CAD.

With regards to the first one being borderline SI1/SI2. Do you think i'm better off avoiding this then?

Here is a picture I grabbed today (I know its probably impossible to see much on it via picture: https://imgur.com/a/59g2hv8)

I think they are both overpriced, especially because the second one has almost zero info. And the first seems more like an sI2 than an sI1. I would use the search tool (as @OoohShiny said), and limit to stones that are either giaXXX OR AGS0 and that score under 2 on the HCA.

Is the 11k-12k in CAD or USD? If CAD, then your budget is around 8-9k USD at current FX rates. I think still both stones are overpriced from the B&M jeweller.

As for the pic, very difficult to make much out from it.

Re the SI1, it has the types of inclusions for a SI1 that I don’t particularly mind as the grade setters (twinning wisps). Provided you can get better imagery of the stone that confirms whether the twinning wisps are noticeable, I’d reserve any further comment on it.

Re: getting GIA report for 2nd stone, they’d better be up for reducing the price if the GIA lab report comes back with differing grades for colour and clarity for the stone. If it truly is H&A, I would want the retailer to show me H&A scope images to prove optical symmetry.

As lovedogs has mentioned you will get better value from PS forum recommended vendors.

Thank you for all the feedback and would like to confirm the prices are CAD so my budget for my stone would be approx $8500 USD. Perhaps I will pass on these and ask the jeweler to get me more inventory.

Thanks!

Oh whoops! Sorry, I was totally messing up your budget. My bad!
