Thoughts on Cushion

Hi all,

I recently purchased the components of my soon-to-be engagement ring for my long time girlfriend. She is in love with cushion cut diamonds so I went that route. The only issue is I really fell in love with a more rectangular cushion (we never really discussed if she likes squared or more rectangular. I am having this set in a Ritani platinum band with .15 diamonds on the band plus a surpise diamond set underneath the cushion (I guess this helps with reflecting light?). Specs on the diamond: GIA 0.91 carat, D, SI1, un-rated cut (due to it being a cushion). Let me know your thoughts!

Additional questions:
-What is the purpose of the surprise diamond?
-Are rectangular cushions more or less desirable?
-What do you think I should have paid for this diamond (want to check if I was able to bargain a favorable deal)?

Price would depend on which laboratory graded the stone.

If GIA/AGS, I'd perhaps have paid $4000-5000. The ratio (i.e. width to length, perfect square having a 1:1 ratio) seems quite extreme, like way over 1.5:1? Do you have the dimensions and other details?
 
I do not have the exact dimensions in front of me but I calculated the ratio earlier and it was 1.21:1. I think this image may make it appear a little more rectangular than it really is but it is definitely more rectangular than square.
 
Hmmm.

For the record, I do think it looks like a great stone.

But from that picture, it does look to me as if it is closer to a 1.3 ratio than to 1.2, but I know photos can be misleading (although the fingers don't appear to be that elongated). Anyway... I don't think this has any bearing on the aesthetics or attractiveness of the stone, but I bring this up because long cushions won't be to everyone's taste and accordingly that can affect the value - once you start to get above the 1.2 or 1.3 ratio, it can reduce the price per carat compared with something which is 1.15 or even 1:1. For some reason the cushion seems to behave differently in this pricing aspect when compared with say radiants (where ratios aren't such a big deal) and asscher v emerald cuts.

I was probably being a little bit mean with the price I put down there; I think nearer to/around the $5k region (£3.5k in my language) would be a fair price, assuming VG-EX polish and symmetry and no-faint fluorescence. Do you have polish/sym/fluor details? Also table and depth % etc.

Just for looks. Doesnt really have anything to do with improving the light on the center stone unless this is something that
is new that I'm not familiar with.

I would say they are not as popular as ones that are closer to square. Nothing wrong with them.
-What do you think I should have paid for this diamond (want to check if I was able to bargain a favorable deal)?
I'm going to guess around $3200/$3400.
 
I think that the $3k price band is too low - see on GOG here http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/10887/

This seems identical in many aspects (at least as many as we can tell from the original post), but is an I colour (rather than D) and it is still priced at $3.7k. I think you'd struggle to find a D colour (even with those ratios below the $4k mark).
 
I agree the 3k seems low, the price I paid was towards the low end of the 4-5k. Original quoted price was 5k. I found a similar stone on James Allen http://www.jamesallen.com/loose-diamonds/cushion-cut/0.90-carat-e-color-si1-clarity-sku-172656.... It seems with a E color and falling close to 1 carat you can rarely drop below 4k if ever.

Just realized I mistyped before, it is an E not D.

Also, I do not think the picture is elongated but I believe the tweezers (?) create an illusion as to how wide the stone actually is, who knows I'll post the actual dimensions when available.
 
Update: Actual stone dimensions: 6.39 x 5.25 x 3.59 equalling 1.22:1
