DA83C693-4AAF-448B-AC59-48668FD19C80.jpeg What’s the general consensus on cathedral setting for princess cut diamond? Pros and cons? I haven’t seen on IRL.

The image is what this setting looks like.

I understand that princess cut can break more easily and so should be somewhat more protected in the setting than a round ...
But that cathedral is not all that high, imo, and if the setting is designed for e princess (to be safe), I think it’s lovely!

I prefer cathedral settings for basket style heads.

I like cathedral settings when there is a basket for them to attach to. I dont really like it when the arms just hang in the air because there is nowhere
for them to attach. That setting head/cathedral look fine to me.

Thanks - I’m always a little cautious buying online without seeing first. The choice is really between a classic 4 claw or this cathedral - I’m leaning forwards this one

I prefer a cathedral setting for a solitaire. And I agree with @tyty333 about having them connect to a basket vs open air. I reset my princess from a cathedral that didn’t connect, to one that connects to a basket earlier this year. It looks so much better now.

What do you mean by connect to a basket? Is the one in the photos I uploaded above a basket?

Yes, on mine, the cathedral sides are connected to the thin little bar halfway down between the prongs. On my old setting, the cathedral sides didn’t touch anything. They just ended near my stone, midair.

I prefer cathedrals as well, but I don't like them when they are gratuitously high. You can have a cathedral low to the finger. Also I prefer v prongs for princess cuts.

This is all helpful feedback. @jbake your setting looks really nice.

I’m looking for something clean, simple and classy - hoping the cathedral setting is not too flashy or elaborate in appearance.

See how the arms to this cathedral are not connected to the basket (just stop in mid-air). This is what we are saying we dont like. We like how they are connected in @jbake 's ring (see photo above) and the one you have posted. This especially comes into play with smaller stones where you can see the ends of the arms at the side
of the stone. Bigger stones will usually cover the arms but still not pretty in my book.

This is my old setting vs new. The new one is more delicate overall, but the sides connecting make a huge difference, too.

I understand now. Thanks.

@jbake what a difference the setting has made the appearance of the stone.

Right...I am going for the cathedral

I love the elegance of a plain cathedral setting.
