So I said I would NEVER go below an I in an EC. But I am having an extremely hard time staying in budget with I color and above. A nice J showed up. Love the size, ratio, and it’s eye clean. My hang up is the J color. Thoughts? Will have more imaging Monday. I have also been talking a lot with 2 custom cutters for ECs. I know this can be tricky but I trust both a lot. Should I hold out for them? Thanks in advance!

Keep your options open. Don’t make a rash decision just yet!

I am pretty darn picky! Looking for at least 10.5 x 8 or above, 1.3 ratio or below and eye clean. Of course beautiful diamond as well.

Can you wear it on trial basis for a week?

Yes, good return policy. However... I have no other diamonds to compare to as far as color. That’s my biggest hang up. Seems like J is always a “no go” in ECs and having a hard time wrapping my head around that.

Usually I would agree with you. Just wondering if you would change your mind if you could try it for a. WHile. If you had your heart set on higher color and you know yourself well enough that it would bug you and you would keep trying to get a higher color even after you had the J then I would skip it. The question is how mental is the color issue for you?

Yes, that’s the question I have to ask myself. I have been mostly influenced by the articles I have read about J color in an EC

If your opinion is based on what you read I would tend to be willing to try it on a trial basis to be completely sure. It’s a chance for you to see if you can tolerate a J. It may be good info for you in the future too.

Hi! If it were me, I would say no to a J. It's priced low for a reason. Yes,you can convince yourself it's a great color, but the minute you put it against any other diamond in your jewelry wardrobe, the yellow will show up. I have an H stone, I do regret a bit I purchased it. My setting is a plain solitaire, and at the time, it looked great and super white to me. Then after wearing at it a while, my eyes got more fine tuned and when I compare it against my other diamonds, for sure you can see the H faint yellow come through.

Are you trying to hit a magic carat weight? If the magic number is 4.0ct, maybe you can go down to a 4.10-4.20 range and get an H? A 4ct stone is already a good size, so going down in size a bit will not matter visualy. Emeralds are step cut, and to me, they show any tint of color more so than rounds. And to me, emeralds are less about "fire and briliance" but they are more about the beauty of step cuts, like clear glass, that you can look into infinity.

When you look at the stone, I would recommend you compare it to your other diamonds. My guess is you will see that faint difference. Over time, it will become more obvious and you may regret it.
If it were me, I would pass for sure.

Just my two cents. Hope this helps.

HI:

You have not seen the stone IRL yet, correct?

If there is a great return policy/upgrade policy, what is the risk looking IRL? You have already stated you have no IRL comparison/frame of reference in this sized or color graded stone so I can only surmise your "objections" are, academic. Given you have been looking for 6 months you may never get 10 or 5 or even 2 great stones to compare side by side.

FWIW, I saw a large K colored EC and was fooled, entirely, on the color "guessing" game. I thought it was graded much more toward the colorless range. In short, and it was wonderful. But I am not you.

cheers--Sharon

Thank you all! I had a 3 carat I color and it never bugged me one minute. I felt the EC picked up the surrounding colors so much that one could never really tell whats it's true color was. I may just order it in. I will be posting more photos when I get them Monday.

After 6 months and finding nothing, I began to reach out to Brian Gavin and Jon. It sounds so tempting to go for a custom cut EC with ideal optics. But it is a waiting game and there are no absolute guarantees.

I will ask again...the vendor said closer to an I...is that bogus? Seems they always say it is closer to the better color:lol:

As long as they don't say it is Sponge Bob Square Pants!:lol-2:

@Emeraldsaremyfavorite Have you thought about asking someone attending JCK this weekend to hunt something down for you? Never know what they may find there ...

I love my K with Fluor. If you lived by me I'd let you play with it.

Color bugs me in shapes that come to a point, like lemons and pears. The points show color more. That's why my marquise is an E. My MRBs run from H to K and my EC is a K too.

Hi, Emeraldsaremyfavorite! I just saw your thread now for the first time and I know how much you've been wanting the new EC and waiting for the right one to come along!
Here are my thoughts: I don't think this one is going to perform very well, based primarily on the ASET. There are thick blue bars (which indicate obstruction) and although there is a fair amount of red, it's not evenly distributed throughout the stone - it's mostly in the center, which means that, while it will appear bright in the center, there won't be much step movement and the stone won't look as bright towards the outer ends- so the stone won't look as big as it would have if the light continued to travel to the outer edges. o_O

While color is important, it's not just the color that makes the stone beautiful. For example, I had a 4 ct. I-color EC that I wasn't happy with. It just wasn't, in my opinion, a great looking EC because it seemed dull to me. Maybe it was the cut or just the nature of that particular stone. I know you loved your I-color EC! So there was something great about the stone you had in addition to the color! :D

If you can take a stone home and live with it a while, see it in different lighting, that would be the best way for you to get to know it. Then you'd have a feel for whether or not you really want it.
But I think I'd pass on this one because of the ASET. I think you can do better-and not because of the color. Maybe stay open on color, but try to find the stone with some or all of the attributes that made your 3 carat so special to you! :kiss2:

Who says this? J is always a no go?

“Step cuts show more color” is a common phrase here but lots of those people say that without seeing the diamond. And those people are not you.

The best thing you can do is see it in person and take it to all the places you’ll wear it. Work, your house, the store. See it with your own eyes.

@Niel thanks so much for the information. Definitely right about having to take home the diamond and see it in different lighting situations. I have done a lot of reading and most informational sites recommend going up in color when choosing an EC. Actually, most sites say stay H and above and I had an "I" that I loved so who knows!

@Blingalingaling So glad you chimed in! I am still closely following your journey. Funny...I am an EC lover as well, small- 5'2" but small hands- size 4:) Many similarities. I have been working with Shulamit at ID Jewelry, love her! Very patient and helpful. You are very right about this diamond...tons of blue could mean absolutely void of life. I still am going to get some images of the diamond in... for that off chance it performs well. Tough thing is, I owned a beautiful EC and need to go up to at least a 4 carat to make this whole thing worth it. But don't have an endless budget so it is making it extremely tough.

@PintoBean Glad to hear you love your K!

Will update more images on Monday everyone but have a feeling I will pass on this one based on the ASET. But gosh it was perfect in ratio, size and dimensions!

I agree you need to see it to believe it, which is why I said, keep all of your options open. Make in informed decision. Experience the J up close & personal.

You do have to see ANY stone to know if it's color and cut are appealing to you. I really like higher color diamonds in general, but the surprise was on me when I bought my K color antique asscher. It was such a gorgeous stone, I had to at least look at it. I was surprised that it didn't look tinted. It must be borderline J. It is more of an antique white. But I loved it overall and kept it since well cut antique asschers are not exactly common. I'd say that I usually like G-H in any modern cut, but with step cuts and other large faceted, antique cut stones, I think you can go a little lower on a case by case basis. So it's impossible for me to really have an opinion without seeing the particular stone. I wouldn't rule this one out. I have said this on another thread, but there is no way on earth that I'd commit to buying a custom cut 4 ct (fancy shape) stone that I don't see until it is complete. The only exception to that would be a custom cut, super ideal cut round.

@Matthews1127 and @diamondseeker2006 very Good points on Seeing the stone in person, and good to know that a J is not completely out. What do you both think of the ASET? Is it a train wreck? I will have a 360 video on Monday and the vendor does have a 30 day return policy, I just want to know if it’s even worth ordering in.

No, not a train wreck. You will see some contrast in these images which is what the blue is. But when the stone moves, different facets will light up.

Worst case scenario is that you'll find out what your color limit is. But every stone we see in person adds to our knowledge of what we like.

^this. Contrast does not = leakage. ;)2
