Thoughts? Caysie & custom oval rose cut?

So....been looking for awhile and thought I would go with an AVC from Jonathan (I almost feel like I’m cheating on him, lol) but I saw this and couldn’t get it out of my head. Caysie found me an 8.5 x 6.5 ovalrose cut, G color...she thinks it’s great. What do you think of this ring? I know it’s probably smaller than most PSers but it’s big for us, lol. It would be for our 20th, with intention to pass down to my daughterone day. Do you like or stick with AVC solitaire or even an opal opulence? Or keep looking? This one would be white gold, soft brushed matte finish.

I think it’s very pretty, but AVC and opulence ovals are such different stones to it that it’s very hard to compare!! I think a lot of it is going to come down to personal preference. FWIW I love working with Caysie and think she’s great! But so is Jonathan, so tough choice there.
 
There would be a couple factors for me:
a) price- I've seen rose cut diamonds prices rival those of "regular cuts" for the same coverage
b) Cut- If I had seen a rose cut/AVC in person before and liked it. I'd be less willing to take a risk on a cut I hadn't seen in person.
 
One of the things I love about this forum is seeing so many styles of cuts and settings. Prior to here I didn't give two thoughts to any of this. Since then I've learned I like a lot of different things. None of which I will never wear because I'm a guy. And my fiancee isn't as varied in her tastes, so many of those things will never find there way to our home. However, when she is ready and finds something that speaks to her, we will make it a reality.

I mention this only because I think a particular stone like this needs to speak to you. If it's not talking maybe it's not the one. Your choices seem great to me but something I learned after being here is I like a lot of the old chunky facet cuts. Of course hard to beat the awesomeness of a round super ideal as well.

Over the years I have learned to follow my gut even if there was no other reason. It tends to lead me right even if I don't have the logical proof at the time I make the decision.

Be steady. Listen carefully and trust yourself. You got this!
 
Ugh.... I was so sure. The only thing holding me back is not try a rose cut on in person. I love the oval shapes on though.
 
Personally, if it were my choice, I’d go the AVC route. I own 2 AVCs & adore both. You can get an elongated more rectangular shape which would mimic the ‘oval’ appearance you like in that rose cut. For my personal choice, I would prefer the performance of an AVC cut over a rose cut long term. But what a fun dilemma to have!!
 
I like rose cuts but would do more as a rhr personally. A dress ring rather than a special ring. I love the AVC and opulence ovals and that would be my preference over a rose cut especially if you have never seen one in person. They are a particular look. I like the look and own rose cuts but if I had to choose - AVC would win every time.
 
Given the choice of these three, I'd go with the AVR or an AVC - if you want it a bit more elongate.
 
I feel like the rose cut you posted is a bit tready right now. It is totally beautiful, but if you are making a purchase with the intention of passing it to your daughter, do you think it will “stand the test of time”?
I think the MRB and even AVRs and AVCs will look less dated in 20 years. But hey, what do I know? :lol-2:

I have a rose cut from cvb in a spring gulch halo. I really like it but definitely not for my ering. Rise cuts are impossible to keep clean and about 80% of the time look crappy. After a good cleaning they look great but a few hours later not so much.
 
Agree with others! I think that Caysie has a knack for finding some of the best rose cuts (those high domes!), but I am not sure I would go with a rose cut for a 20 year upgrade. Especially if your other considerations are an avc or opulence, which are both known for crazy light return. If the rose cut sings to you, by all means go for it! But the appeal is less consistent, so may not be the best choice for an heirloom ring to pass on...
 
I agree with the others. I like rose cuts but they are so different. If you did a rose cut, I would do a faux foil back. I also think that they are trendy now. I have old rose cuts that are super rustic and a modern one in a target ring. The modern one while pretty, feels less classic. If you want to hand it down, I'd want to make it look as antique in style as possible- the faux foil back look.

For what you are looking at, I'd do the AVC.
 
So confused now....thought I had my mind made up after sooooo long. I never thought of these as trendy.... I’ve never seen one in person and can barely find them online. Some good points to consider though. Thx all

As others have mentioned, it’s what speaks to YOU. There are ladies that are infatuated with their “galaxy” or salt and pepper diamonds in their e ring, though the majority wouldn’t PREFER this type of stone. Other ladies have other precious/semi precious stones in their e ring because it spoke to them, even though they are not the majority. If you love this and it makes your heart flutter then go for it. The advice here is amazing, from folks with more knowledge than many could hope or want to achieve, but at the end of the day you will be wearing it. I personally would choose an AVR, but this is just my preference.

If possible maybe see both/all in person and see which one you can imagine on your finger. It is a gorgeous rose cut!

Agreed. But if this speaks to you, your daughter will love it for having been yours and your style :)

My bff got a large rose cut despite all the warnings, and she adores it and gets compliments all the time. Maybe order a cheap moissanite rose cut off eBay to test out the feel?
 
You’ve been given great advice on the stone selection.
I echo go with what your heart wants. But your heart needs to see these in person. If you make your decision before that, it may always tug at you. We’ve all seen pictures of things that we have coveted, but once in hand the reality may be different.
Your children, if it’s in the cards for them to have sentimental attachment to what you have passed down, will treasure whatever you held as special.
I don’t think it was mentioned already, but the setting you have pictured above is what you are thinking? I personally wouldn’t risk having a rose cut stone set in a ring with it’s girdle so exposed. Or so that’s the way it looks from that one pic.

I took a picture of my rose cut round that doesn’t have a foil back or faux back so you can see in daylight how it’s kind of see through. It’s pretty, but a specific look.

You sound disappointed. I think many of us answered what we would prefer. I know that I did. But what are your compelling reasons for wanting this ring instead? You are the one who is going to be wearing it. Or rather, what drew you to it? I can see how it would be very unique as an ering. Is that a motivation?
 
Yeah, of course I admit I was a bit disappointed by the reaction but knowledge is power (especially about cleanings) and I’m taking into consideration everyone’s comments but Caysie’s as well, as she’s been incredible through this and works with them frequently. The only thing I really didn’t understand is the trendy comment. I’ve never really seen one until that picture searching ovals. I’ve never seen one in a B&M store, and VERY few online. No one I know in real life has one either. Maybe my definition of trendy is depifferent than others.

It’s a big thing for us. This is for our 20 year anniversary and I’ve never had an official engagement ring. I’m not discounting anything and still drooling over the AVCs and Opulence.... It’s a big emotional and financial decision and I just don’t want to mess up. My daughter also looked at that picture mixed with other rings and picked that one too. Getting back to it, lol, I did see this setting too that I loved:

Maybe part of it is I’m not ready for this process to be ove4 (looking/drooling, lol) so I’m having a hard time committing.
 
If you do love the rose cut (as I do!) then don't give up... but perhaps imagine one as a pendant, or earrings, etc as well as a ring, as far as possibility. Some people prefer the foil back look and some don't, but the advice given (above) to get some moissanites and play with them to see if you love the look once they are worn, is great thinking.

As far as them being trendy, it's pretty accurate, as fashion is cyclical... what was all the rage in 1780 went out of favour and came back in several times! Nowadays when people think engagement or anniversaries we tend to instantly think brilliant cut of varying styles/eras.

Was there a setting that you might choose if you were to put an AVR in? Or would you want a similar setting?
 
I really like the second ring inspiration you posted in that it looks to have a delicate edge support around the girdle. If you look at Caysie's stock setting that shows a rose cut - Norah?- it also has some metal supporting the girdle, unlike the first ring you posted.
Also- you should think about whatever ring style you want- NOT having the rose cuts back flat on the skin of your finger. That will help somewhat with see through- ness. And keep in mind the diameter /height of the stone you are looking at vs some of the examples that show massive windows. That may matter.
If you are overwhelmed. Step back and take a breather. This should be fun for you.
If you don't want to bring in a stone from a vendor to view in person under a return program, knowing the possibility that you might be out shipping both ways - you are only out cash that is a drop in the bucket for your project. But peace of mind to know what you want /don't want is priceless.

I really like rose cuts and think they’re ethereal and beautiful. If they make your heart sing, I would get one. Worst case, you sell it if you don’t love it. But I do think if you get a high-dome cut, it won’t be as see-through as the flatter ones and you’ll see a lovely prismatic effect.
I had a foiled back on my moissy rose cuts and hated it because water would stay in it after cleaning.. and with big facets, I wanted to be able to clean it frequently. I had the foil removed from mine (smaller and moissy so not a perfect comparison) and have never noticed any issues with them being see thru or looking like there was a hole in the middle.
 
helllllo old friends! So i rarely post on PS anymore but someone showed me this thread since Rose cuts are my jam- OP, a lot of people love rose cuts and i don' t know if it's trendy as much as more people are discovering them due to social media, and suddenly there are a bunch of celebrities ( Zoe Kravitz, Mandy Moore, and the OG rose cut queen Jen Anniston) getting them! There are many ways to get that very soft, elegant look you are after while getting some sparkle.

1) There are many kinds of cuts of rosies, just like with any other diamond. To prevent that flat or windowed effect you want smaller facets and a higher dome, vs. most of the more modern rose cuts that have broad facets and are more flat.

2) you can absolutely close the back of a rose cut and still have openings for cleaning. It will give you a lot more sparkle then then soft, subtle shimmer of open back stones- but many people like that look also!

3) If you have never seen them in person it is worth trying to do that before making a decision. However, i know many people who had never seen one in person and they don't regret their decision to take the plunge one bit.

At the end of the day, you want something that makes you happy. so focus on that, and go from there. #sparkjoy
