Who Thing2, you''re the next contestant . . .

I''m glad to see you back here on PS although I understand why you needed a break.
7.gif
I definitely get all riled up in real life also...you should see how red my face gets when I fight with my parents about politics! My mom enacted a no politics rule but me and my dad like to argue so we break it all the time!
9.gif
It drives my twin sister and my fiance crazy because they think I''m just wasting my time, but I don''t want my family thinking their opinions are the only valid ones out there! I''m one of the few liberals they come across and since they made me I figure it means more when I''m flapping at them than when my super liberal hippy aunt and cousins are!

But back to clothes! Uh-oh, your first designer bag...there''s no going back now!
3.gif
And is there a good tailor in your town? If you can find one who can reattach the original hem on jeans you''ll be in business! You know how the hem of jeans always have kind of wear marks on them? Well if the tailor can reattach the original hem no one can tell you hemmed them. Also, if you want a pair of bootcut jeans, hemming jeans a ton will take off the flare at the bottom so they''ll end up straight leg. So if you''re going for a bootcut look but you have to chop a bunch of fabric off at the bottom, go for a flare leg instead. Tips I learned when I was selling jeans before all the designers came out with petite fits!

Let''s see, my favorite movies are: Royal Tenenbaums, Wet Hot American Summer, True Romance, Love Actually, Super Troopers, Saved...I think that''s most of them. Favorite books...that''s tough because I''ll read just about anything, but I love anything by David Sedaris. I also love Paul Auster and one of my favorite novels ever is probably Bel Canto by Ann Patchett. I also like nonfiction and love me a good feminist book. The Frailty Myth by Collette Dowling is a great book about women in sports and is one of my faves.

And I just graduated college a couple of weeks ago and I was a psych major with a minor in sociology. I should post a graduation picture in here, come to think of it. I''m still working as a buyer for now but I''m thinking about getting into clinical research...I just need some more experience in the clinical side. I did a lot of psych research in my last 2 semesters but I don''t have any clinical trials experience.

My fiance thinks I''m nuts too but I think he thinks it''s cute. This is the only forum I post on and I didn''t even really know about internet forums before PS so I didn''t know just how nerdy it made me that I post on a forum regularly until he told me!
3.gif
He''s nerdy so he knows about that kind of stuff. And although he doesn''t LOVE buying me diamonds yet, I''m working on him! He did split my earrings with me a while ago and he''s going to put some $ towards a diamond something or other I want to get for graduation, so he''s warming to the idea!

Okay, sorry, now I''m rambling way too much because I''m up way past my bedtime! I slept in too late today and I don''t need a ton of sleep so this is what I get for sleeping in!

At least you''re willing to debate! I love debate, even though sometimes I totally lose my head. I agree your parents might be more likely to listen to you since they made you [lol]. I think it''s so funny that you and your twin are the only liberals of so many of you- so funny. Were you raised conservatively? How did you get to be so liberal, anyways? I am usually the only really really liberal person [besides Wifey who is a true radical!
30.gif
] and I secretly love reading other peoples'' comments and stuff that are really liberal. Shhh! I know it''s a bad habit to love to hear the choir but it''s satisfying because even at my very liberal college there are few very progressive people.

I am not sure if there is a good tailor, but I am so glad you told me what to look for! You are a wealth of knowledge, I never would have guessed or thought of the hem thing. Maybe that is why they looked so Sh***y when I folded the bottoms up under the inside of the pants a few weeks ago when I was shopping... hmmm.... I can''t believe how good you are at this! I am so clueless with fashion.

Great movies! I am laughing out loud at you mentioning Saved.
36.gif
Have you ever seen the movie But I''m a Cheerleader? I know, sorry, I''m like a walking pride parade
20.gif
but it seems like you would think it was funny and cute. Good feminist books are my favourite! I have never read anything by the the specific authors you mentioned. I will have to look that one book up! All I read are books about politics and gender studies [my majors]... I think I need to branch out. Your major and minor sound really cool. I bet clinical psych would be really cool. I wish I knew more about psych. All I ever read about psych are those really dumb pop evolutionary psychology studies that are done really poorly! I''m not sure if you''ve seen them, but they come out alll the time and are often featured on the homepages of yahoo and msn and stuff. "Women are like ____ and men are like ____ based on some weird thing we made up that our "primitive ancestors" used to do that isn''t historically accurate."
20.gif
What is the coolest or most interesting thing you ever learned in school? What is your favourite part about learning about those subjects? Why do you want to get into clinical psych? So many questions! Congrats on graduating!!!! I graduate in May and it feels crazy. You should definitely post a picture.

Funny about your geeky fiance. It sounds like he''s coming around with the diamonds! We deeeefinitely can''t budget for diamonds but sometimes Wifey says something really cute about how someday she will buy me this or that. So sweet! Now that you''ve described your little progression in getting your fiance into buying you diamonds I will be taking notes so I can try a similar path...
31.gif

Goodnight! I feel like I never sleep and am on perpetual study-until-4am school time, even though I''ve been done for two weeks and have a month off now.

Richmond! Yay east coast!

I''m CA born and raised but I lived for 10 years in NC. I did live in VA Beach for a short time with an ex-bf who was Navy. My folks live near Lexington, VA. My sister (her husband is in the Navy) has a house in Norfolk but they are renting it out since they move around a lot. I''m in CA now but pining for a move. It''s so expensive here and I miss the seasons.

I don''t know a lot of Billy Bragg. Is it Mermaid Avenue that is the Billy Bragg/Wilco album? There''s one that one of my cooler exes had (he loves BB) that he played a lot that I liked. Is California Stars a BB or Wilco song? I bet BB is fun to see live.

Sorry if I''m thread-jacking!

You are definitely not thread-jacking-I like chatting with peeps here! I''ve been to Lexington, VA a few times. My sister''s ex-bf had a family cabin there and we went camping there once...so pretty and fun.

Mermaid Avenue is the BB/Wilco CD of Woodie Guthrie songs. Guthrie''s daughter contacted Billy Bragg and gave him access to the lyrics of thousands of unrecorded Guthrie songs, and then BB invited Wilco to be a part of it, too. Apparently Guthrie didn''t write music down-he just kept it in his head-so once he died the music to go with the lyrics were gone. (I should point out that I only know this because BB explained it at his show!) Anyways, I''m pretty sure it''s the guy from Wilco who sings California Stars.

My favorite song from that album is probably Way Over Yonder In The Minor Key-I love it! Oh and BB said that Woody Guthrie was a dirty old man, so the song Ingrid Bergman on that album is really pretty naughty...and if you listen to it with that in mind you''re like
6.gif
! He was awesome live-so funny, and he sounds exactly like the albums, which I like. I hate it when you see a band and they sound horrible compared to their album.

You should totally come back to VA! I could probably never not live on the east coast...I know I would definitely miss the seasons if I moved to the west coast, too. I actually don''t think I''ll ever leave Richmond! The only place I would move to is NYC but I don''t think I want to live there. Do you think you''ll definitely move back to the east coast eventually?
See you didn''t tell me all this! I really need to push this up on my priority list. Actually, I really need to get some Guthrie!

Oooh, that will be nice to have your sister and niece so close! My older sister and nieces are just a few hours away but I still wish she was closer! And my twin sis lives in my same apartment building which is about as close as we can get! (We lived together many years ago when we were 18-19 and it did NOT go well! Let''s just say our other roommates got used to tuning out all the yelling!)

I''ve heard Norfolk is nice-I''m not too familiar with that area but I have a lot of friends from VA Beach and they all like it there. And if your husband works for the D.O.D. that would be perfect. I know there are nice parts of Northern VA as well but it''s apparently very expensive there. But it would be nice to be close to DC! I''ve never been to the Birchmere in DC but I have heard of it. I''ve only been to the 9:30 Club and the Black Cat in DC. I think I saw the Yeah Yeah Yeahs at the Black Cat. And I saw Weezer at American University but I think it was just in their gym...
Why do I want to say I was at that show? That can''t be right. I think I saw them at 9:30. Speaking of Bender Arena (their gym), I had tickets to see Nirvana there and we didn''t make it to the show. Am I upset? Am I? Of course not.
39.gif

Wishful: (quotes are too long!)

Yeah, I don''t know why we''re the only liberals, either! Both of us have really never quite fit in (in school, at work, etc.). We''ve also always been more questioning of authority and tradition than our older siblings. Maybe because we''re spoiled because we''re the babies? Who knows! Not to sound like a silly scenester, but we both used to be pretty into punk music and that whole scene, so I''m sure that''s a part of it. It probably doesn''t hurt that we stopped going to church once we started driving! Plus we went to college that''s in the city, has a big art program, etc. And I feel you on reading stuff that''s preaching to the choir! I''ve "met" several people here on PS that believe in a lot of the same stuff I do and I love reading their super smart comments I just nod my head along to! I''m a pretty f-ing liberal feminist and it''s so nice to chat with like-minded peeps!

And I''m only good at the fashion stuff because it''s my job! Hahaha...believe it or not I was once a pop punk girl who lived in Dickies or cargo shorts and band t-shirts!

I love the movie But I''m A Cheerleader! It''s so good! And speaking of movies, have you seen the documentary Jesus Camp? YIKES. It''s about these super evangelical kids and it just blows your mind.
23.gif
Basically a horror movie!

I do enjoy gender studies...I''ve taken a few classes on it and I wrote a paper about fashion for a sociology class and a lot of it had to do with gender. There''s a book by Diana Crane called Fashion and Its Social Agenda: Class, Gender and Identity in Clothing that''s good. Pretty interesting read although if I recall, the majority was not about gender. (I own it but I can''t find it right now to double check!)

When I was a kid I was never much into being a girl. I decided my name (Chrissy) sounded too girly and babyish so I made everyone call me Chris. And I had short hair and was a total tomboy, so of course most people thought I was a boy. Which I never minded. And I remember being furious that I couldn''t be an altar server (raised Catholic) because I was a girl. I tried to get my mom to take me to the classes anyways but she wouldn''t. I like to think I was a feminist before I even knew what one was!
3.gif

What do you want to do when you graduate? I know you''ve mentioned grad school but any ideas career-wise?

Oh, another good feminist read is called Where The Girls Are: Growing Up Female with the Mass Media, by Susan J. Douglas. I''m sure you don''t need any more academic books to read but this one is an easy read.

And I also HATE evolutionary psychology! I think it''s total BS and it is such a copout. "Men want a woman to make babies, so that''s why they like younger women!" Yeah, I''m sure it has nothing to do with how women are sexualized in our society! It''s all about our primitive brains! UGH. Probably the most interesting stuff I learned was in a class I took this past semester on Conformity, Compliance and Obedience. We went over everything from people just wanting to fit in, to compliance techniques, to the Asch line experiments, the Milgram experiments and cults like Jonestown. I''m very interested in cults for some reason so I loved learning about them. Random aside, but my twin sister''s boyf from high school is now apparently in some cult! He changed his name and ran away with his wife after his parents tried to have an intervention. I find that so crazy and just fascinating!

I want to get into clinical research because I find it so interesting and it''s more of a career than what I do now. The studies I worked on for one of my research teams were about some pretty obscure stuff (Terror Management Theory which is basically about how people compensate when one area of their knowledge is threatened) and I liked learning about it. And the other study I worked on was about interventions and teaching coping methods to at-risk adolescents so it had very important practical applications which was also sweet. Most of the jobs I''ve seen have been for clinical research-I think most non-clinical research is probably run by students and grad students like the ones I worked on! And I''ve always been interested in medical stuff so I think it would be cool to do clinical research. The stuff I''ve seen jobs listed for have mostly had to do with cancer research and drug addiction research. I actually applied to one job but I don''t think I''m really qualified because of my lack of *clinical* research experience, so I doubt I''ll get a call, but I figured it was worth a shot.

And we both have no excuse to stay up so late right now! I''m done with school and you''re out! I just like staying up late for some reason...I''ve always been a night owl. Alright, I have to actually get to work at 9 tomorrow so I better get off the computer soon. I''m sure I rambled enough for you anyways!

39.gif

OMG you missed Nirvana?! Sad. A guy I used to work with missed a Nirvana show because his mom was driving him and his friend to the show, and he called a cop who wouldn''t let them drive somewhere near the show a "f-ing pig" and she heard him...and she''s a cop! So she turned around and wouldn''t let him go! Hahaha! Horrible!

When did you see Weezer at the 9:30 Club? I don''t think I ever saw them there but my show years are all blending together at this point! I think I saw them twice, though, so once could have been at the 9:30 Club. I had so much fun at the Bender Arena show! That would be so funny if you were there too!

And I should have told you about Billy Bragg doing Guthrie! You should definitely check out that album-it is sooooo good! I only know about the Guthrie stuff because Billy Bragg told us at his show! I''m a bad music fan and I just thought all the songs I knew were his.

Thing, I have missed some posts but did you get any fun presents for graduating? hehe Any fun trips planned??

Just money for graduation and I already spent it all! I was broke from not being able to work much because of school!

I don''t have a trip planned currently-I wanted to go somewhere right after I graduated but I was too low on funds. I''m thinking about going to Ireland in March with my sister but nothing is set in stone! I don''t really know where I want to go to be honest! Glad you liked the pics!

Haha- I like you. Always the odd duck out. Lucky you you have a twin to be the odd duck with you! It's so cool how close the two of you are. I used to wish I had a twin, but my sister is only 16 months younger than me, so at some points in our lives it has felt as though we were twins. She is SO different from me, though, and I think she judges me for not being a social butterfly and for being married already... we don't get along very well right now, but have in the past so I hope it changes soon! I agree about the cool people on PS; I always love reading the stuff you guys are saying. I am trying to be less combative so if I know I am going to get all freaked out and have to debate with someone on here I back down from saying anything... so bad, I know, but I think I've thrown enough hissy fits in the ss marriage threads to last me a lifetime of bad associations on this board! I've moved on to arguing with people on facebook, which isn't much better in terms of making me look good, but a lot more entertaining for my smart-a** personality.

So funny you've seen But I'm a Cheerleader. I have TOTALLY seen Jesus Camp and it scared the bejeezus out of me [
3.gif
] It is absolutely a horror movie. If you like stuff like that you might like some of the documentary segments done by Louis Theroux. He is a British journalist and has tailed some really interesting [as in frightening!] people, like Fred Phelps, the Westboro Baptist Church guy, and his family, as well as the girls in Prussian Blue. He is really adorable and British and good at getting people to open up. Clips of his stuff can be found on Youtube if you search his name and "Prussian Blue" or "Fred Phelps."

Gender Studies is pretty much my favourite. The paper you wrote sounds really interesting. My Gender Studies program [and most of 3rd wave feminism, really] focuses on "intersectionality"--so, the connections between race, class, sexual orientation, and gender, etc. That book sounds great, and something I would be really interested in. Cute that you were a feminist before you even knew what it was. I definitely was too, but not about the usual things people talk about, like noticing the gender bias in religion or toys. My parents are both hippies and feminists and most everything we were introduced to was femininst-friendly. I don't think I realized how bad sexism really was until I started to be more cognizant about the world around me... maybe in middle school. The other book by Susan J. Douglas sounds interesting too. Who am I kidding... I always end up reading the academic ones even for fun. Geek.

I am not really sure what I want to do when I graduate. I am 99% sure I want to be a professor, but the tricky part is what I want to profess. I need to figure that out before this coming fall so I can apply to programs! My primary area of research [undergrad honors thesis and classwork] is in public policy and law, but not from a traditional standpoint at all... sort of where public policy and politics, especially political theory, intersects with gender studies and critical legal theory. I am working on my thesis analyzing Welfare reform and abstinence only sex ed legislation through the lens of political/social theorists [Foucault and Levi-Strauss, mostly] to examine the ways in which these policies contribute to an American understanding of ideal citizenship, as well as the ways in which these ideals are introduced to Americans through education and political/social discourse. Okay.. that was WAY more than you ever wanted to know, sorry. I think I would be best in a Political Theory PhD program, but I am also looking at Public Policy, Gender Studies, Jurisprudence and Social Policy, or Feminist Studies of some sort... or maybe Cultural Studies? In any of those programs I would continue doing the research I am doing now, but it's hard to tell what department I will be a professor in. I am also interested in maybe doing political advising for non-profit organizations or possibly getting an [additional.. ugh] law degree with a focus in civil rights pertaining to women and minoritarian sexualities and genders. Okay... I am done now.

And yes, I know there has to be more to psych than that crap!! I just don't learn about most of it, which is too bad. I would love to learn more. Lately my evo-psych hate is directed towards the "men are primitive animals" camp... am I *really* supposed to believe that men are incapable of controlling themselves? Lack of sexual control is usually what they focus on, and how it's the woman's job to fend off the poor, animalistic men who can't help but rape women if women aren't careful. Ugh. If men are so stupid [and they're obviously not] why do the SAME people who say that claim that men are the ones who should be in charge of everything? I have to read about this a lot because it's in a lot of the abstinence education textbooks I am using in my analysis... I can't believe my money is funding brainwashing teenagers with this stuff.
The class on Conformity, Compliance, and Obedience sounds really good, and really scary! Some of those experiments are terrifying, if I am thinking of the right ones [the one with the guard and prisoner where they shock them? YECH!]. Cults are also really interesting. Wifey is into that sort of thing, and also serial killers.

What sort of at-risk adolescents were you working with in your studies? I used to be at-risk because of my mental health [bipolar], so that sort of thing is really interesting to me. It's also such a great way to help people, which is really awesome. I am really interested in disability studies, but my college doesn't offer much on it, unfortunately. It's good that there are jobs available in the field you want to go into, even if you don't yet have the experience. Do you have to do more school to get that experience, or is it something you can learn more hands-on in the workplace?

I am always up late. Midnight-4am are my peak brain hours, so it's usually when I am reading and writing papers. What a sad life... how am I ever going to hold a job?
20.gif

OK..Thing, Wishful, you two just scare me. (Freaky smart!) And I think I''m getting depressed. I can''t keep UP! I never had evolutionary psych, (pretty sure it didn''t even exist when I was in college! LOL!) and all this talk of doing graduate work and being a prof. Sigh. I could just kick myself for not staying in school. Of course back then I really didn''t know what I wanted to be when I grew up. Still don''t I guess.... But I DO have books on Milgram and other obedience type studies, so can I join your clubhouse??
17.gif

I am soooo not the ruler of this clubhouse, but I think it's safe to say on everyone's behalf that we would love for you to join in!!! Karen, you are on of my favourite PS posters. I always look forward to reading your helpful and informative posts and lending your knowledge to so many different threads. You are so intelligent. Bah with the degrees and chosen professions. I am every day thankful for the opportunities I have had to be able to pursue an education at all. Not to mention the 70k in debt I'll be once it's all over.
28.gif

Evo-psych is its own beast... I hear that outside of the "pop" [as in, pop culture] version there is a legit field of psychology dedicated to it, but I've heard just as many people say that it's ridiculous, so I take that for what it's worth. I do think it is a relatively new field, but it [at the least the flimsy studies I've seen] is often used to justify the stupid things people have been saying for centuries, often about sex and gender: men are superior to women; women are raped because men can't help themselves; pink is a "girl's" colour because women used to gather berries in the forest...
20.gif
It's just a pseudo-scientific way to argue those tired points.

Hmmmm... back to questions for Thing- What is your favourite place that you have traveled thus far? If you could buy any one piece of clothing or fashion-related item regardless of cost, what would it be?

I keep forgetting to tell you I love Weezer! I meant to tell you about a few pages back! I have a few of their cd''s! Do you have a favorite song of theirs or you like it all? I like Jaime, but I like it all! Is there still a restaurant named Stella''s out there? It is my hubbys favorite Greek restaurant!

Welcome back!!

Thing, where in KY is your FI from?

Off to convince my MD to prescribe some Retin A...lol!

He moved around a bit as a kid but his hometown is probably Bowling Green. And he went to Western Kentucky University. Are you from KY?

And yes, get your doctor to get you some Retin A-it''s amazing! I stopped using it this summer because it makes your skin sensitive to the sun and I play outdoor soccer a lot in the summer, but I recently started using it again and my skin is looking awesome!
Hey Thing2 - random note. I''ve been off PS forever but checked in today. I''m sure I''ll be in a fight before it''s over

Anyway, once again, we have something in common. I have a great deal of family from KY and more specifically Bowling Green. My mom graduated from WKU and my grandfather was the Dean of English there many decades ago. Always nice to read you Thing. Happy Inauguration Day!

Funny! I wonder if your family knows his family! His grandmother was pretty well known and loved in Bowling Green and she lived there for many years.

And Happy Inauguration Day to you! I noticed I hadn''t seen you around lately...good to see you back and swinging!

Thanks Miscka! I visited my dress last weekend at my parents'' house...I love it! BTW, my fiance''s mom lives in Lexington...I don''t know if I told you that already!

I got 1 pair of wedding shoes already but I can''t keep them on my feet because the heel strap is not adjustable (I have narrow feet and extra narrow heels) so they''re going back. They''re crazy high also, so I would probably break an ankle in them if I did wear them. But I ordered another pair last night and I''m hoping they work out because I love them!

These are the Stuart Weitzman shoes I can''t keep on my feet:

swhiartsdfa.jpg

And these are the newest ones I just ordered...love them! Hopefully they''ll fit and look good with my dress! They''re by Pura Lopez...I''m not familiar with the line at all but they look pretty nice:

I love those shoes!!!!!!!

I love your new shoes, Thing! I think they will look great with your adorable dress. Hope they work out!

Randomly: I always want to type "Thingie" instead of "Thing" because it sounds less horrible, like you are a thing. Eeek! I know I could call you "Thing2" but usually I forget that too. If an occasional Thingie pops out, don''t be too surprised.

You ARE good, Karen! Love the Ren & Stimpy song, Moon-I used to love that show!

I will totally hunt down a picture of me with all the earrings...I know just the one but my sister has it and I''ll have to scan it so it may be a few days. You all will laugh at me, I guarantee it!

For now I have a little sneak preview from back when I was more pop punk, but without all my earrings. I just had my plugs here...yes that''s right. I am an idiot who stretched out her ear holes and it''s pretty permanent...but the good news is you can''t tell when I have my studs in!
