Today I stopped at an antique mall.
I told the lady (my age) at the counter that I wanted to look at something in a jewelry case that was in another room.
She handed keys to a young man (25- ish) working there. He looked up from his phone, took the keys, stood up and stared at me.
So I proceeded to walk to the case. He followed me. He opened the case and took out the item, a loose, very large star diopside. Dead silence. I showed him the star by shining my phone flashlight on it. Awkward silence. So I started to talk about this stone, comparing it to star sapphire. He mumbled, "oh, that's cool"
That was all I could get out of him.
I guess an old lady babbling about gemstones was not his cup of tea.
Maybe they just don't want to talk to anyone who looks "old" to them.
These silent workers are just beyond the pale to me!
