Hi there, I am considering having some work done by Ocean Rose Pearlman, could you show me some of her pave work or just tell me about her in general. I know very little about her, but I like what I've seen. Has any had experience working with her? any advice? Does she have good long term customer service in case any stones fall out?

thanks PS!

Bumpity bump

Re: Tell me/Show me about pave work done by Ocean Rose Pearl

When I was first talking to Ocean she sent me many examples of her pave work in close ups. I would ask her for some pics.

Also another PSer Cehrabehra has a ring by Ocean, with a completely different style than mine, with pave as well. You can search for it.

As for Ocean's personality? She is one of the loveliest women I've ever talked to. I'd have her over for dinner at my house if I lived near her. She's a very geniune person.

I enjoyed her as a person as well, very thoughtful and considerate person. The process for me was not without issues, though gypsy did her ring directly after mine and she didn't have any of those issues. The work she did was perfect. The symmetry and execution was perfect.

thank you for the info, btw why did you pick her? I am torn between going with her or with a local jewelery store that does a lot of custom work and has experience w/ what I am doing.

I would encourage you to use this forum to read reviews on Ocean and well as other custom ring makers. If you could show us the style of ring you want made, we might could recommend others you could consider. One to consider would be Maytal Hannah. Her website ishttp://maytalhannah.com/

Actually from what I've seen of Maytal Hannah's work on and off this board I would really love to work with her. I have attempted to contact her twice by phone and via email and have yet to hear anything back :( I heard others were having similar problems reaching her

Calling is best, I never rely on emails for this kind of thing.. At least in the beginning.. Maytal does exceptional work.

I haven't had any contact with Ocean, but see she does great work as well...

My preference from what I have seen is Maytal. But that's just me... Good luck!!!

Re: Tell me/Show me about pave work done by Ocean Rose Pearl

Maytal must be out of town or something. But I actually emailed her last week for a quote myself (small project), and haven't heard back, so I know there must be a temporary issue of some kind. I did have contact with her in Nov. and Dec. because she made my daughter's wedding band. She was easy to work with, very nice, and the ring is just beautiful quality! So I'd just email her again in a couple of days and try again after that if you don't her from her. I hope she isn't sick!

Re: Tell me/Show me about pave work done by Ocean Rose Pearl

I think a lot of vendors are out of town, I went to a few jewelery stores in town today and a bunch of the managers were going out of town to Tuscon, I think there's a gem show there or something.

Re: Tell me/Show me about pave work done by Ocean Rose Pearl

Why did I go with Ocean? Well, there were a lot of things that went into my decision making.

I hadn't done any custom projects, and I wanted someone with a certain skill set and talent who would do handmade fabrication and who had an amenable personality. First three meant Leon, Maytal, Ocean (Durnell wasn't in the mix then). The reason having the right personality was important to me is because I wanted a collaboration. I knew what I wanted, but not how to make it work and I needed input about what my options were in terms of construction at each step. I wanted someone with enough patience to explain things to me but someone who was strong enough to tell me if I was flat out wrong. Leon has anything but an amenable personality. Quite the opposite. And doesn't put up with questions. Maytal didn't answer my emails for weeks and there was no 'out of office' reply to let me know when I could expect to hear from her and I wanted someone responsive and well, there. And I knew Wink both from the boards and by reputation, even though I didn't know Ocean, and I trusted him (still do) when he told me about Ocean skills and so I decided on Ocean after speaking to her about what I wanted.

What I've learned in the last four years as a result of the multiple custom projects:

Working on custom projects requires mutual trust. You have to trust your designer. And you have to trust yourself that you've chosen the right person and then get out of their way. But they have to keep that trust and not make 'executive changes' without contacting you and need to trust that you will listen to them when they say something isn't possible or advisable. And they need to understand that, when it comes to decisions that are purely asthetic (not structural), ultimately YOU will be wearing the ring and your opinion outweighs theirs. That's rare.

My advise is to pick the person who has the skills you want (as proven by multiple projects and reviews), who you trust the most... and who in turn rewards your trust with theirs.

Re: Tell me/Show me about pave work done by Ocean Rose Pearl

Gypsy - That is great advice and feedback you are sharing.

I have worked with 2 out of the 3 mentioned and spent a lot of time talking to the third. I actually found Leon very open to answering questions and was probably the most thorough in explaining the technical aspects to me. If the price is right, I will always go back to Leon and I have been plesantly surprised that his quote was not always the highest. I have 3 rings from him and I am very happy with them. I have also seen a lot of pieces he made and I love them.

I really liked Ocean and found her responsive. I know CCL was very pleased with the earrings she made for his wife.

Maytal really cares about making her customers happy and that is really important in a good relationship. She is not as quick on email but I think it is because she is busy with her kids.

Re: Tell me/Show me about pave work done by Ocean Rose Pearl

Hi Charmy, I've seen a lot of Leon's pieces of every type. Our Nor Cal Pser GTG litterally abound with his three stones, pave, and now even AN's gorgeous Cuprian Tourmaline with the french cut shank. His work is impressive. And he is the only designer outside or Durnell how doesn't fear working wtih smaller than 1 pointers. Ocean and Maytal are both uncomfortable with melee that small. I've also seen Leon's work next to my Oean and next to Durnell's pave.

I have also spoken with Leon, and I can tell you that in my experience, you question anything that man has TOLD YOU IS GOING TO BE THE WAY IT IS... he is not nice. And can be quite rude. I realize that's not everyone's experience. But my experience certainly isn't a unique one either.

Durnell's pave is a work of art and matches his easily. My own Ocean holds up nicely in a side by side louping, but my halo is slightly assymetrical and that does bugs me a bit. Plus I've lost 4 stones. 2 I've had to have fully replaced two I've found the stones and just had to have someone fix for me. That's a bit too much for me. But I contacted Ocean this week, and she is going willing to re-do my halo again, to make it more symetrical and to make it stronger and safer. I knew Ocean wasn't confortable with the delicacy of the pave I wanted. But I pushed forward anyway. She really is a doll ot work with and ABSOLUTELY wants you to have a wearable piece you are thrilled with. She's very geniune. And you are more than a project for her.

Now, four years later I've learned that if a designer tells me something isn't practical and that I will have issues with it (which Ocean did warn me) to listen to them.

A lot of working with designers is making sure you have the right fit. I have found Brian Gavin to be able to read my mind. I can send Brian a few concept pics, a blurb about what I want. And talk to him for 10 minutes and the next thing I know he's got the exact image in my head on a CAD. I just click with him. I didn't have that click with Ocean, but it was close. Much of that lack of click was my own fault though because I was scared and over-controlling with the custom process.

I have also learned to trust my instincts, if that click isn't there I don't proceed.

Re: Tell me/Show me about pave work done by Ocean Rose Pearl

I hope you don't mind me asking more questions. I am always looking for people who can meet my standards.

I have only seen Durnell's work online and in pictures and I found that the flow and curves are not as pleasing to my eyes. This is the one thing that has troubled me as I am unable to find someone that can make the rings with lines that flow as nicely as Leon can. I can find compareable pave work but not the actual ring design and . It's so hard to explain what I mean here ... :( How do you feel about this in real life?

On your Ocean ring, when did the pave start falling out? Do you take off your rings at home? Sorry, not questioning how you treat your rings but trying to understand the context. I also wonder if this has something to do with experience in building more delicate pieces. As an example, my Leon ring is "thinner" than my Maytal ring by .2 mm yet my Leon ring is much more sturdy than my Maytal ring. Although, the design of my Leon ring should be much less sturdy given that the shank does not connect to the lower donut.

Re: Tell me/Show me about pave work done by Ocean Rose Pearl

I think Leon is better at Delicacy IN GENERAL of any of our jewelers. He gets it right.

I don't think delicacy is what Durnell loves, so her stock pieces reflect that. But the piece of hers that I saw out did any Leon for delicacy construction and design. Plus I've seen custom work of hers that people have requested delicacy on and it's been lovely.

Here's the Durnell around my neck: Durnell%20GYPM.jpg

As for Maytal and Ocean... no I don't think either of them is used to doing delicate and sturdy the same way Leon is.

My first stone busted when I wore my setting to bed accidentally one night about 6 months after getting it. I actually broke that stone, still in the setting. Another dropped out at work ( I was only wearing it to work then) about a year ago. Then I stopped wearing it to work and only on weekends when out of the house. I had two stone fall out side by side just a while ago 8 months?

I baby it.

Gypsy i love your engagement ring and have been looking to have the same one made. Who would you recommend and where are these designers located?

Just in case Gypsy doesn't see this, I will tell you that she had her halo redone by Steven Kirsch in NYC:

The other outstanding pave master I would recommend is Victor Canera in LA. You can work with either one via long distance. They have both made many rings for people on this forum.

Re: Tell me/Show me about pave work done by Ocean Rose Pearl

Aww, I'm glad you like my ring.

As DS posted, I did have my halo re-done. Ocean's pave did not stand up to standard wear and tear.

I highly recommend Steven Kirsch if you have the budget for hand forged.
If you do not have the budget for it, then Engagement Rings Direct's CAD bench is a good choice. :wavey:

Let me know if there is anything I can do to help you.

Lucky you! You are also near Good Old Gold which has about the most diverse collection of well cut diamonds as any jeweler in the country, probably!

Re: Tell me/Show me about pave work done by Ocean Rose Pearl

Great news. Steven is great and believes in excellent customer service. That said, he's not cuddly. But personally, that's not what I look for. Make an appointment and go in to see him. :wavey:
