Sticker SHOCK!

Had to resurrect this thread. Just got back from shopping for new kitchen cabinet knobs & pulls. Silly me thought it would nice to go for glass or something a bit artsy, yanno, to add some interest and be different from the typical stuff. Everything I liked was above $20. I have 50 knobs and 24 pulls in the kitchen = 74 total pieces of hardware. So anything I want that is different from the norm will cost me more than $1500  :blackeye:  :$$): Ain't gonna happen.

HI:

Thank you for reviving this thread. It gives me an opportunity to say (aka gripe) that I paid $18 for a cocktail, lately, in Maui. Sticker shock all the way down....twice :lickout:

At any rate Matata, I also had sticker shock when shopping for hardware with my kitchen remodel. I was fortunate that my renovator had a long association with the distributor that provided the knobs I wanted...and was able to get a 20% discount over "dealer" rate, locally. Unfortunately that didn't translate to most other stuff I wanted elsewhere in my house...

Buying online seems to help...but as with anything are limited to selection and quantity.

Ksinger made a good point in my reno thread....that in the long run (and I paraphrase), the knobs make a statement that are you and a focal point is perhaps worth it "for you". KWIM?

Have a cocktail. Buy the knobs. ;))

cheers--Sharon

sig worthy.....and while i'm not buying knobs, I am going to take the advice to have a cocktail!
cheers and have a great weekend, Sharon!

My DH and I have been house hunting ! It's totally ridiculous how much a small 3 bedroom home or condo costs in Los Angeles. Over 500K for a fixer upper with hardly any back yard to speak of...gimme a break !!

HI:

Nerve wracking and frustrating ($$) at the same time. Good luck on your search!

Shopping for a bike... Bikes seem really expensive. We live by a lake and there are lots of bike shops around... the cheapest bikes they sell are $800. Is this normal? I just keep thinking maybe I'd rather put that money in the bling fund than use it to exercise...

anything kitchen remodeling related blows my mind. We completely built a kitchen from the ground up (had to move a lot of stuff/plumbing around) after we priced everything, we figured 25,000, but it was almost double, and that was after we bargain shopped and did most of the installation myself.

sheesh!

That sounds like South Florida Prices too!

I felt this way in buying costly bikes every couple of year while my son was growing up. We would trade in/up with the same shop, but it was always $$. I enjoyed the quality of the products, but sheesh.

That said, i have had the same bike (Giant) for years and it was worth every penny, yet not OTT $$.

Picture frames! And worse- mats!

I'm working a renno/redecoration of my family's retail shop and picture frames are blowing my mind! 8x10 print, < $2; 11x14 frame with glass and mat > $15 (and that's the online discount place!). That adds up really quickly when you need 30 frames!

Text books!!! The CB just started back to school yesterday. Tuition for two classes at the community college to meet general requirements: $492. The books for those two classes: $290. Wow.

honey -- I just paid $20 for a jar :o (same jar I used to get for $7!)

maple syrup.

This is a great thread!! I find it amusing how we tend to be more accepting of the prices of some things, only to have complete sticker shock with others! Even though I knew the price, I still went into sticker shock mode, given the situation.

Hair cut: $135... IN ALABAMA!!! *WTF? Really??!! I ask my stylist if she would even up my hair on one side (my hair grows faster on the left... I know, wierd) and she just looked at me and sweetly said, "msop, now you know if I lift my scissors I have to charge you..." I've been going to her for forever, so we just laughed, but I don't think she was joking... :? :|

I don't get it...a hair cut joke?? Isn't the scissor "rental" factored into the cut? :D

If he's going to re-sell, have him look for the school bulletin board or the online board. He can sell directly to another student for FAR more than the bookstore would give him. One person in my class sold his math book to another student for $110 (new $190, used $150) after the bookstore wanted to give him $10!

I've been keeping all of my books because it just isn't worth it to take them to the bookstore. The only one I did that with they gave me $1.50  (physics, math, and engineering books make great reference books to use for later!)

I love a really good honey in my tea. Blackberry or raspberry or wild-berry or :lickout: :lickout:

Were chocolate chips always this expensive?!?
Got a bag for $4.99 the other day
Of course they were a dark chocolate (65% :appl: ) but still!

Having just come back from a cruise that included Norway and Sweden, London now seems extremely good value for money.

I wasn't scheduled for a cut, only color and blow dry. She would've done a full on cut since there was plenty of time, but I really didn't want a lot of length off, just a little "snip snip" for evening it out. I guess I was naive. Only REAL CUTS for that price!! Lol :|

Yes! I'm lucky that house prices are pretty cheap where I am. But I'm always shocked at how much things cost in other markets. House Hunters International is particularly shocking. I watched one episode that took place in the south of France and the man was buying a 300sf flat for something like $200-300k. Here, you could buy a 2500sf, fully upgraded single family home for that amount.

Billy Ray went in for his first oil change. At check-out:

Max (the service manager): That will be six twenty-five.
Me: Six twenty-five what?
Max: Six hundred twenty five dollars.
Me: American?!?

Welcome to the world of expensive upkeep. I will be taking the Lexus in for an oil change tomorrow morning... $19.95. American!

Maybe you have to because Norway is super-expensive! A friend of mine visited there lately and he told that in Oslo a pint of beer cost about 20e. I live in Finland (so Norway is a neighboring country and standard of living is pretty much the same) and in here a pint would more like 4-5e...

Latest major sticker shock for me was this spring when buying some plants for my little balcony pot garden. They were asking for 15e (about $20) for a tomato plant! So I decided to change my plan to strawberries and herbs instead. :lickout:

Also prices of jewelry here causes sticker shock too... :D Even with all the trouble doing business via email and having to pay our hefty VAT (24%) on anything bought outside Europe it's still so much cheaper to buy from US.
