What are the main differences between a square and rectangle radiants, besides the obvious dimensions? Do the dimensions affect the quality of the cut? Squares seem a lot harder to find right now than rectangles and cut out a lot of options in my price range...under $5K. Do rectangles look clunky or anything on a finger? If rectangles are OK, is there a good L/W range to look for? Over 1.25?? Any help would be appreciated....looking for a radiant, very good cut, 1.0-1.25, H-I, VS2-S1.
Thanks!
Ben

Hey Bennyboy,

In my experience Sqaures are a little bit better for light return than rectangles. A sqaure stone is even on all four sides, so the faceting can be much more even all the way around the stone. Some rectangles show big dark spots due to light leaking out of the center of the stone. sqaures will do this as well, but to a much less extent. Accoring to major labs, 1.25 L X W ratio is considered the break point between square and rectangle, although you will still see a little rectangleness from stones that aren''t really close in the measurements. On the flip side, I personally think rectangles are easier to desgin a ring around, in that they have longer sides and usually look a little larger. The longness of the stone lends its self to the longness of the finger, so from a desgin standpoint it may look nicer. rectangles are also VERY easy to find in that a cutter has to acually try for a sqaure instead of just cutting what he has.

Any help?

Not really... a certain range (mentioned on the AGA charts here) is supposed to be preffered traditionally, but noone seems to advocate those strongly. It remains a matter of taste.

Good luck hunting the right rad !

I found a bunch of stones on PS and narrowed down to what I think are the 4 best in my budget (under $4.5K). Each has its positives and negatives. Which do you think is an overall better stone and why? I''ve accepted getting a rectangular radiant rather than a square as they''re harder to find or much smaller in my price range.
