Slight issue with engagement ring setting

Hi guys,

I received the engagement ring today. I was totally excited - the diamond is gorgeous.

However, upon close inspection, I noticed an imperfection in the platinum ring. There are two *very* small scratches on the shank near the prongs. It looks like the ring was scratched during the setting process. The marks are parallel, maybe 1/4 millimeter long each. You can only see them if you hold the ring up to your eye. I would post pictures, but I don''t think my camera will accurately pick up this detail.

I know this is a personal decision that I''ll need to make - but how would you handle this? Would you return the ring to the vendor and ask for a new one? I''ll likely have to pay return shipping, but I feel like it is reasonable to demand perfection with such a purchase.

If it is very obvious, the vendor will cover the shipping. Give them a call and talk about it.

It is possible they could be polished out without difficulty, contact the vendor and explain and see what they suggest. You bought it from James Allen if I remember rightly? They will take care of you.

Marks like you describe can usually be easily polished out, so that would be the likely fix for it.

The tools used in the setting process leave marks on the metal and the final step of finishing is to remove these marks. What you describe sounds like less of a defect as it does an incomplete job. Either way it’s reasonable to complain to the maker about it if it bugs you. Call up the vendor and ask them how they would like to handle it. It shouldn’t be necessary to replace the whole piece and within logistical limits of shipping times and the like they should be able to fix it quickly and 100% to your satisfaction.

This actually happened to me too. On one area of my ring the tool marks were not polished out. Tacori agreed to take the ring back and finish it. My appraiser was surprised that is passed quality control but I really didn''t care, I just wanted it fixed.

Thanks for the insight. That is what I assumed happened. A bit disappointed that the quality control wasn''t a bit more thorough.

I''ll contact the vendor and see how they think we should handle this.

That is good advice from Lorelei and Denverappraiser and all the other posters.
Such tiny marks are not an uncommon result of the setting process and are usually able to be polished off - in fact as Denverappraiser explained, the polishing is the final step that completes the ring. If you can only see the marks close up and if they are so tiny as not to be picked up normal view, it may be that the polisher did do his job but had not allowed for someone to look at the ring so closely.

I agree that the ring should have been polished to perfection...but keeping in mind that your ring will be worn daily and in a short time will pick up much deeper and obvious scratches,nicks and marks...the patination created by daily wear will cover the marks in question anyway...is it worth giving up your ring for a period of time to have the minor scraps removed....the first scratches on a new piece are always the worst to the wearer...and in most cases never noticable to others...
