Shared prong halo vs pave

My gf really likes halos with her main criteria being a delicate halo with very little metal showing. She's all about not being able to see individual stones and just sparkling diamonds. My problem is she's shown me both both types of setting shared prong, and pave (fishtail & mushroom).

Is a shared prong going to give the effects she likes? I've seen more pave example so if someone has a shared prong to show that would be helpful.

Hi,

In order to have a nice halo with little metal showing you can try shared prongs - but that's not really the best solution, because as a halo is round the prongs at the outside edge end up really big and essentially flat wide prongs. Having a nicely split prong at the top and spared at the bottom will make it appear there is less metal, and will reflect white the off the inside of the splits. When we make these to show less metal it's important that the stones be seated properly and close together. Also, the smaller the stones in the halo the less gap you will see.

I always suggest split (2) prongs at the outer edge because the look is much better - but it has to be set properly to have that reduced metal look.



In this photo, you see that we've made the ring with the outside split and inside shared. It's the only way to get it really tight. Remember also, that this is about 5X zoomed in, so in the original 3ct ring, the halo looks like a smooth sparkly ring of white.

Micropave. Victor is highly recommended on here. So is Steven Kirsch.

Setting should be in platinum. And will run you about 4000-5500 depending on what specific choices you make.

It sounds like your GF wants what I wanted for my fairly recent re-set. Initially, I chose the VC Emilya halo, but ended up choosing ERD to design my ring. While I have no doubt that VC's designs are lovely, I achieved my goal and was (and still am!) extremely pleased with my ERD round halo. I get compliments on my ring all the time. I agree that you should go with a platinum setting.

Thanks for the help everyone. Those examples are what I'm leaning towards and I've talked to some of the PS vendors. The local jewelers all were saying they can get that look, but with shared prongs. Not sure if that just because they can't do pave or not...

It has to be done by hand. Sometimes companies try to do "pre-setting" where they design the full prongs into the model. In this case it would not work correctly - the beads need to be raised by hand, and the most efficient way is with a microscope. Of course, that alone does not guarantee a clean job.
