This kind of thinking is the exact reason I will not listen to BLM. She is one of the founders of this "movement."

Excerpt:

“How do we stop violence, looting, and riots? The way that we stop that is by making sure that people have the things that they need to thrive,” Garza says. “When people are systematically denied their right to adequate housing, adequate schools, to adequate food, to dignity—this is a response and a reaction that we should absolutely expect.”

IMO these things are not rights. You obtain them by working. Just like everyone else does.

And police-free communities? SMH.

Human beings do not have the right to dignity, food, and an education?

IMO - They have the responsibility to obtain these things for themselves as it is not the purpose of government to "make sure people have the things that they need to thrive."

So I'll ask again. You don't believe people are born with the right to dignity, food, and an education.

You don't believe people... on a very base level, should have the right to dignity. Really?

Wow, possibly one of the harshest things I've ever read. I understand when people don't like socialism, but wow.

There is a flaw in your logic though. What about food deserts? In some poor communities there are no grocery stores nearby - only 7/11, mcD, etc. Someone has enough money (earned through working, as you stipulate) to buy groceries, but not enough to buy a car. But they cannot get to a grocery store to get healthy food for their child. So they end up spending MORE by going to 711 to buy apples or get unhealthy mcD for their kids. How do you suggest that they obtain this themselves when the govt makes it near impossible? Who is responsible for putting transit routes in? Infrastructure? Bylaws to ensure fair distribution of these? BY GOLLY that sounds like the government!

Both of you are misunderstanding, or just don't like, my opinion that it is not the government's job to provide these things to people for free. I fully support assistance for the poor disabled and elderly who need it. But able bodied persons should be working. If a city/county decides that it needs a bus or train system, and can pay for it, then that is great. But the taxpayers of that city/county ultimately fund it. My area has a bus transit system that is private, not government, funded.

Dignity starts with one's self. Looting and rioting does not deserve respect or dignity.

So what is the purpose of the govt if not to care for the people of its country?

The government is elected by the people to work for them, represent them. The concept of the government CARING for its people is not how things are set up here. People don't need Big Brother in charge of them; the people are in charge of Big Brother.

I am a strong advocate of government safety net programs. No one likes to see them abused, including myself, but that doesn't mean they should end altogether.

I feel like a govt who is working for me and representing me also needs to care about me! If the govt doesn't care about the people it represents, what motivation does it have to actually do what we want?
So bizarre to me haha.

It is laid out in the preamble of the Constitution.

We the people of the United States, in order to form a more perfect union, establish justice, insure domestic tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general welfare, and secure the blessings of liberty to ourselves and our posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.

Again IMO it is not the purpose of government to care for its citizens.

ETA - as far as education, if the school system is bad in one's locale, then those citizens need to take action to rectify it. Demand that the schools and teachers do better, but do it in a proper and respectable way.

When a black woman in Kentucky was jailed for shoplifting, she was brought into court wearing no pants. In the days prior to that she was given no pants and no feminine hygiene products even when she requested them multiple times. By your logic she is not entitled to dignity because she committed a crime? That's the kind of country you want to live in?

Power.

True. Citizens should have the power but there is such a divide on what the purpose of government is, as we can see here in this thread. Government has proven time and time again that it cannot responsibly manage the funds it receives. Both sides of the aisle are guilty. It is now a behemoth of special interests and waste.

I already stated that I support assistance for the poor disabled and elderly. Your idea of "general welfare" and mine do not jibe it appears.

This has nothing to do with anything redwood said.

And just to be very clear, there is NO ONE on PS that would agree with the ugly way this woman was treated. The judge certainly did not agree with the way the inmate had been treated, and started an investigation into the jail and its employees.

Don't put words in another poster's mouth or assume you know what they think. Take their words at face value, and if you need clarification about their position ... ASK. But don't sling mud and pretend that you won the debate that way.

Uh, Holly. I am not intimidated whatsoever by your posting style, so let's get that straight right now. I asked for clarification twice, and was told that dignity starts with oneself and that rioting is not worthy of respect. So I remain as unclear about her position as I did when I asked. And I'm sure she is capable of answering me herself.

And I am not intimidated by yours. I don't know what was ambiguous about me stating that IMO housing, food and education are not rights to be given by taxpayers to able bodied people who should be responsible for themselves. If you cannot grasp that from my posts then I cannot help you any further. You just want to fight by bringing in a case that has nothing to do with the discussion - then cite "by your logic"?

First, make sure your children stay in school.

And make sure your children's schools are teaching the fundamentals they will need to make them a self supporting member of the community. Join a PTO to make your voices heard.

And 100%+ to you Redwood, as dignity comes from within in how you present yourself to others.

As far as the basics - food, clothing, housing - there is a difference between someone not letting you into a store or supermarket or to live in any neighborhood one chooses. That is blatant discrimination and should not be tolerated.

But in order to achieve this, children need to stay in school, get a job, and earn the money to obtain them, just live everyone else has to do.

Life is not a free ride.

Anything in there about reparations for the businesses the rioters looted and destroyed.

They should have insurance against looting. There is no insurance against being shot and killed for being black and not doing anything wrong.

T - This is where we lose each other on this issue - how much this actually happens when taken into account the millions of interactions between police and the public each year. The 24 hour media and instantaneous uploading of videos has made this seem more prevalent than the numbers bear out. Are there bad cops? Most definitely but not like these groups would like you to think.

ETA - not complying with lawful police orders is doing something wrong. I have said before, if the cop is in the wrong - stay alive and work that out later.

No DF. It is not the job of the government to create jobs. They have enough already. It is their responsibility to allow a free market that will allow businesses to create jobs without the hindrance of onerous regulation.

The other day you said you were going to start quoting the customary way.
You even demonstrated you knew how to do it.

Reminder: just click the quote"" button to the upper-right of the post you wish to quote.

Then, type your response below the quote.
Easy.

Then everyone will know whom you are quoting.
This makes it much easier for people to follow a thread ... at least we with imperfect memories, we who are not psychic, we who do not have photographic memories, and we who do more with our day than follow one single thread.

Thanks.
