Hello all,

I'm going to be getting a ~1c antique style cut cushion soon and now I've focused my attention to a setting. My GF likes halos as well as antique style looks. Halos do seem old school and I like them. Of course I could get a more traditional looking halo, say a halo with a paved band. Something like this also caught my eye:

http://www.debebians.com/split-shank-halo-engagement-ring-with-mobius-twist.html

That twist just really jumps out to me. Every female I have shown that ring too has really liked it too. I think they all secretly want a big bright sparkly ring :)

My concerns are that maybe it is "too much" or a little gaudy. Also I could see the ring getting knocked into everything and all those stones flying heh.

Thoughts?

Well since you asked for opinions......

I actually really like the setting but I agree I think it might be to gaudy for an ering. I would do the ring with only 1 level, though if you wanted to keep the twists on the side I think that could also be beautiful. I would question how a wedding band would fit with it though.

Do you like the picture of the ring below that I attached? I think something like this would have the same feel to the ring you linked too but a more scaled down classic version.

I highly recommend perhaps take your GF to a store and having her try on different styles halos to see what she likes as there can be soooo many different looks with an antique ring. If you haven't already I would also go on SingleStone. com or 23rd street jewelers to look at some of their rings as I have used them for inspiration many times. Other designers that do this style is Natalie K, Simon G, and Gabriel and Co.

Oh and I wouldn't worry too much about the ring getting knocked around.

Personally , I do like twist shank rings but this one seems like it would be very awkward and uncomfortable on due to all the height.

What about something like this? http://www.jamesallen.com/#!/engagement-rings/halo/18k-white-gold-pave-halo-and-twisted-shank-solitaire-item-6876
or http://www.since1910.com/engagement/sylvie/sylvie-twist-shank-halo-diamond-engagement-ring-sy260-ps4132.aspx
or http://www.since1910.com/engagement/stardust/stardust-twist-halo-micro-pave-diamond-engagement-ring--75cttw-sd-j1522-ps2037.aspx
or http://www.since1910.com/engagement/scott-kay/scott-kay-twist-shank-diamond-engagement-ring-m1756r310-ps4568.aspx
or this if you are considering a designer setting http://www.whiteflash.com/engagement-rings/diamond-settings/verragio-4-prong-bypass-diamond-engagement-ring-1825.htm

I also found this one linked on an older thread...https://www.pricescope.com/community/threads/looking-for-twisted-band-halo-engagement-ring.167401/ link given to a Doron Isaak but that looks like a different ring (http://moyenco.com/index.php/designers/doron-isaak/?nggpage=2&pid=39). Actual image looks like it came from http://www.cabochonfinejewelry.com/email_friend.aspx?sku=R200-1003 but no idea of the quality/reputation of that jeweler. It still has the halo and twist shank look but more delicate than the one you posted, but that may not be your lady's preference (just mine).

These are just a few settings I found...some other suggestions may be Tacori, Simon G, Danhov, or Beverly K. I think I have seen similar styles from those designers before but you could always look around and may find something you think your GF would like at a lower price point.

Another options that is like the quiet, non-crazy cousin but still pretty unique cousin of the twist shank is the split shank, so that may be an idea to entertain as well! Just figured I'd throw that in there just in case ;)) good luck!

I like the idea of the setting you posted but it looks very thick and chunky. I think that a similar style but something more delicate looking could be really stunning with an antique cushion.

Tacori has some very lovely twisted settings:

Ah, I almost linked the oval Tacori you posted (here with a round but the cushion halo http://www.since1910.com/engagement/tacori/tacori-engagement-ring-with-paveset-diamonds-2627rd-ps1279.aspx?gclid=CPKq2cjc1LUCFexaMgodv3QAVQ) but refrained because it's $4510 for 18k alone...if you have the budget set aside for a setting power to you, but I figured most people don't expect to spend that much on a relatively ready to go setting! It looks marvelous though. Although here's a best offer...http://www.ebay.com/itm/TACORI-Exclusive-Dantela-Collection-criss-crossing-shoulders-2627RD-/111011693806?pt=Loose_Diamonds&hash=item19d8d004ee :naughty: And good call on Gabriel, that's the last one I couldn't think of.

Here are some pics with/without a band.

Pics posted of the wedding band. I don't think it fits in there too awkwardly. I do like the ring you posted. We have pretty much reached the point where I'm not sure how much more of her input I need. A big part of this is her being surprised with what I get her, she wants something from me, not something she picked.

When we did go to look one time she did gravitate towards rings with some presence. Thanks for the suggestions, I'll check out that site and those designers.

Heh I've actually looked at quite a few of the rings you have linked. The top 2 are definitely in contention. I am also trying to keep my budget under 3k if possible.

I actually really like the pictures you posted of the ring with the plain band. The wedding bands didn't sit flush, but still looked very nice. I still think the ring you posted will sit up really high so I would pick something that sits lower on the finger but has more finger coverage so you will still get that presence she wants. I believe the ring I posted was on the page just down a few rows from the one you posted about. Warning that some of the designers I mentioned might be more money then what you want to spend. Gabriel and Co is much more wallet friendly and more in line with DB (which is one of my favorite designers for antique-y inspired rings). Another option I would look into is ERD who I think do art deco/ Edwardian/ Antique rings very well.

I am involved with ERD as well. I'm going to be getting my stone from them. There are lots of halo settings that I like, including this one:

http://www.engagementringsdirect.com/grace-classic-micro-pave-halo-enagement-ring-bpid-58-18.html

Oh too funny! Lots of threads on HW Halos. Perhaps you might perfer my advise compared to others.

This setting is a Harry Winston inspired halo. It is my absolutely favorite though I have one that is a round version from Victor Canera.

My neighbor has that exact ring but with a round from ERD and I think it is stunning. The pave work is excellent and I was extremely impressed...and even slightly jealous as my VC ring was a bit more $$$ then her ERD version. She did have the pave taken off the struts to prevent damage to her wedding band (true antique from her grandmother). But besides that detail you can barely tell our rings apart.

While I obviously LOVE this setting I do think it is a bit more modern then the first setting you choice and way more classic. Regardless both types of halos are gorgeous in my book so you can't go wrong either way. You just need to decide what direction you want to go, classic or more antique.

FWIW if you do decide to go with the HW halo there is a thread by Charmy explaining all the differences and designers who do this ring (many vendors have a version). My personal opinion is that ERD does the BEST version in a CAD/ CAST model and is priced more competively then others.

Did you mean to post a pic? I've actually referenced that thread quite a bit. VERY helpful!

Do you mean a picture of my neighbor's ring? I actually don't hav one and she is out of town at disney this week. She would probably thin I'm crazy if I asked for a photo to post online!!

There is a thread called a collection of halos which has several examples of differnent halos and vendors who produce them. Many are from ERD so if you want to see hand shots real life examples I would suggest looking there. I will find the thread shortly or you can do a search for it.

I think if I go more vintage I would like to stick with something like the ERD grace that I previously linked:

Since you asked ...these are my 2 cents..
Last weekend I stopped by Single Stone to get an idea for a setting for my antique cushion I just picked up last night...as I was browsing...I saw this...it' s not a halo but when set with the acc it was gorgeous!
http://www.singlestone.com/index.php?page=collections&catID=21&startRow=29
It was in Single Stones gorgeous rose gold too....
The side pear shapes are lovely...but...
I want a halo too...more like the tacori 2620 halo...so I am putting together my own custom ring ...but this SS setting I would get in a heart beat...it also is within price range for you...I know it's not a halo, but....hey ...I just wanted to put it out there...it was gorgeous...
