Scratches on High Polish Platinum...

For those of you that have solitaires without sidestones, do you find there are a lot of scratches? I know you can get them polished off, but was wondering how much maintenance that took?

Also, for those that have the pave, or eternity style rings with stones, was that a consideration to get that particular style? (so you wouldnt have to deal with so many scratches).

Am considering changing my e-ring mount (very preliminary stage) & although I love the Royal Crown & other simple solitaires, not sure if the scratches would really get to me. A shiny new platinum ring doesnt stay shiny or new looking for long once the patina starts setting in.

teagreen just got a new solitaire with a shiny platinum band and she noted how it was already getting scratched up on the first day she got it. as much as i love the thought of a solitaire, this always bugs me mentally too. i don''t know if i could take it...hehee. part of the perk of having eternity is that the diamonds really take the brunt of most of it and hide scratches as well. not a lot of metal going on there to get beat up. but i do love a nice solitaire too. maybe if i could get it polished every WEEK? hehee.

I agree with Mara. Another perk of having stones on the band is it hides the scratches. The high polish on the under 1/2 of my ring is pretty scratched up and I have only had it for a little over a year. I have even noticed some scratches on my prongs.

Over time the platinum will turn totally satin due to wear. My first diamond (E, VS1, 1.29 princess) is a simple solitaire and the wedding band is plain platinum, no stones. I recently put on the wedding band with my new ring, which is also a solitaire. Oh, the difference in the platinum! The new one is shiny as anything, the older one is looking like old sterling silver.

I thought for sure I will send this out to be polished. Then I changed my mind. What I noticed is that the older one has developed a "lighter" color. Meaning b/c it is not so shiny it does not have that "steely" look of new platinum. It was mellow, softer. I cleaned it and it looked nice.

I decided to leave it alone and enjoy it as it shows it''s "experience" of six years of wear and six years of participation in my life.

First week my wife picked up her platinum rings she noticed scratches. Didnt bother her, there small fine scratches that can be polished out.

The ring I have now is ribbed (Scott Kay) & I lucky that there is some detailing there that hides the scratches or I think I would go insane. Geez, I think I just made up my mind. LOL I''m going to need to figure out the sidestone issue cause I''m going to have to go that route.

Thanks for the input. Mara, can you imagine how well a home ring polisher would sell! LOL Then we can all not only sonic clean our sparklies, but polish the ring too. LOL Maybe its just a matter of time. haha

As one of the more anal retentive PS''ers with a platinum ring, I would be first in line to buy such a home polisher if it was available!!!! I am extremely careful with my ring and mentally have to work hard at not dinging my ring much. So far so good and my ring only has been polished once in the last six months and it looks new. But, to be able to keep that just polished look at home really appeals to me.

seriously if i had a plain solitaire i think i would buy a home polisher too....because sometimes i clean greg''s ring and all the scratches on his titanium bothers me!!! i would totally obsess on it if i had a solitaire. also when i US my ring, i love how shiny the metal on the head gets, it looks newly polished since that doesn''t have any scratches on it really...so i know i would LOVE that high polished shine from a home polisher over a patina. just me being a wacko!!

I must be weird because I LOVE the tiny little scratches that make up platinum patina. I feel like it makes the ring look old and loved, and gives it more character.

I have heard several people on this forum say that they got milgraining/filigree/engraving/pave in order to avoid acquiring scratches.

I don''t mind the tiny scratches on my platinum solitaire ring. It gets checked, cleaned, and polished about every 6 months and comes back looking brand new. That''s good enough for me.

That''s interesting, because I am already sad about the scratches I have accumulated over 4 days of having my ring!

I was curious about whether your old solitaire setting and plain plat band scratched each other - that''s what I plan to get and I want to know if I will need to worry about scratching. I tried on a silver band with my ring without knowing the silver could scratch the platinum, and I caused some scratching along the edge of the shank, oops! Do you still have your old setting and band, and do you have close up pics of the platinum? I''m curious to see what it looks like after some more time.

There are also scratches the "middle" areas of the shank that must have come from only normal wear and tear, because I haven''t even done anything w/the ring on like wash dishes, grab or carry stuff, except maybe opening doors, which I will stop doing with my left hand!

I just got mine polished yesterday. It looks great...I was amazed, as the bottom was getting pretty scratched up.

The sides were fine before they went in for a shine. It helps I work from home and don''t always wear my rings. I am pretty careful with them, although I have some icky dings on one side from an accident (it hit the concrete). They are harder to notice since I polished the ring, but of course I can tell.

I like the solitaire look. With what I''ve done to my ring, I would have lost a diamond for sure if I had an eternity band. My Jeff Cooper setting is Plat/Ruthenium (sp?) and I think it''s pretty tough for platinum.

I agree! While I don''t have my platinum ring yet, I love the idea of the scratches showing the years of wear.

I have a stainless steel ring that I wear daily, and my BF has a matching one, and I like seeing the little dings and scratches in both of them.
