I noticed an old diamond that I had re-set appears to have a scratch on its side, on the girdle. It was previously bezel set, so if it had always been there, I would not have known. Is it possible that it somehow got scratched while it was being reset? It really does not look like a chip, not sure what to call it other than a scratch. The jeweler who put the stone in a new setting said that it looks like a natural mark (forget what he called it exactly) and that it has probably been there since the beginning of time. He also said that this would not show up on the certificate because the certificate only shows imperfections within the diamond itself, not on its edge (or something like that.)

It doesn''t bother me so much. I will probably have them reset it so that one of the prongs covers it, but should I be concerned about this? To describe it better, it is almost like a tiny little diagonal line on the girdle, but not a fine line, kind of looks just like the girdle, except that it is diagonal through it.

It could well be a natural which is a little piece of the diamond's original skin, sometimes left to retain carat weight, and nothing to worry about. Naturals can be marked on a grading report in green if I remember rightly, but I don't know if this is always the case., or even if this diamond has a grading report if it is an old cut. What is the clarity of the diamond?

It's an SI1 if I recall correctly. There was a grading report . . . I just need to find it.

I read it (maybe wrongly) that the jeweller meant the inclusion was natural as in a feather or other inclusion which has been there since the diamond formed as opposed to a break/chip from an impact. Ofcourse if he said it was only on the surface then a 'natural' maybe was what he meant.

Hiya Pyrrie!

I was wondering this too, as I mentioned in an earlier post, but I am thinking more of a natural, or LV, did the jeweller mention the word gletz? If so, here is a useful thread where John explains it, if this was the word he used.
