I've spent some time looking at a variety of diamonds in store and only just recently decided on the ring and am now looking into diamonds.

To be completely honest I really can't tell much of a difference among the diamonds I have looked at. I've compared this specific diamond with a subpar diamond and could easily see the difference between the color and clarity. However comparing it to a VVS2 under a magnification it there were very little differences that I could see.

Long story short I found the perfect ring in the correct size at a local Ben Bridge. They just so happened to have a diamond in the same size I was looking for and within my original budget of $15k. The following is the ring I'm looking at, A. Jaffe Double Pave. (http://www.ajaffe.com/details.php?t...-shank-engagement-ring-mes521&iz=MES521_B.jpg). Based on the advice of the jeweler a 1 ct diamond is the best for this specific ring, I was originally considering a 1 1/4 diamond but agree tend to agree with the 1 ct recommendation.

Diamond information:

http://www.agslab.com/pdf_sync_reports/104067420038-PDQDF.PDF
1.01 ct
VS2
G color
Florescence: Medium blue
$12.2k

The link above will have additional information that may help.

I feel as if the diamond is significantly overpriced, the one nice benefit is that this specific location has both the diamond and ring. Originally I had planned to propose sometime in January, but the fact that the ring could be ready by Friday is appealing as I could put something together for when family is in town between Christmas and New Years.

Having looked at online retailers it seems that most of the diamonds I have found are 30-50% cheaper. Am I crazy? I'd love some advice from the pros here.

Thanks!

That is very ver expensive compared to what you can get online. Its up to you to decide if the ease of purchasing from that store is worth an extra $3-5k. It's not worth it to me, though ;))

PS: its a beautifully proportioned diamonds, just really pricey.

Thank you so very much for you quick response, I agree I cannot even find a comparably priced diamond online with similar specs.

I know many people do end up buying online, the biggest concern I have is not seeing the diamond in person first. Then again, I don't really know what I'm looking for.

I'd really like for it to be perfect for her, however paying 30%+ is throwing away money that can be used for an amazing proposal night.

That is a sweet diamond on paper, and pretty average retail markup for a chain. You will not find prices comparable to online in a store like that, and that's what you're paying for - right here, right now, right in front of my eyes. Immediate gratification, simple. Only you can decide what that convenience and freedom from stress and worry about the unknown is worth to you. If you have more money than time, and want to save a few grey hairs, buy it and celebrate with your family this holiday season. You'll have the bonus of local future store maintenance and support, likely free cleanings and inspections and whatnot.

On the other hand, if you'll always have a craw in your gut knowing you could have saved some dough and want to take some time searching online, follow that path. Only you know how much the hassle is worth to you.

1 ct, G VS2 A Cut Above (which is top cut quality hearts and arrows) from WhiteFlash, $8833 with pricescope discount and wire payment:

$12k is crazy. I wouldn't even consider it. The stones posted from BG and WF are top of the line and don't need to be seen in advance as long as you know you like G color and want 1 ct.

Another with even better price from Good Old Gold...$8250

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/11255/

Both of these are in-house and could be shipped to you to take to your jeweler before Christmas if you can wire the money quickly.

Thanks, I agree that $12k is out of line after spending the day researching prices.

Regarding the color, would you recommend something better than G?

I personally have had more than one ideal cut G stone and found that it certainly faced up white. I think G is a great choice and my personal first choice for modern round brilliants.

BUT, I would not buy that setting and I will tell you why in another post.

Uh-oh, ok! She's very dead set on this setting but I would love to hear more.

Yes, get the setting, just not the sample setting!

If your budget really is $15k, then you can have that setting made to order to fit the diamond you buy and in her ring size. More than likely, a jeweler would send the diamond to A Jaffe to set rather than you buying a sample ring and be forced to buy a 1 ct diamond just because the jeweler has the sample in the store. I do not know how much that setting costs, but if it would cost $3k to order, then that would leave you $12k for the diamond and you COULD get a larger stone.

This one is $9365 with discounts:

This one is has ideal light performance although not quite hearts and arrows:

http://www.goodoldgold.com/diamond/11493/ (ignore error in the caption, but it is a borderline F/G)

Still looking for diamonds....

This one is ideal cut and 1.40 F SI1...just ask if it is eyeclean from all sides:

This is an outstanding stone if you'd consider H color (ideal cuts are generally going to face up very white in the G-H range):

This one is likely eyeclean:

http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3016687.htm ($11,197 with discounts)

This one faces up with a diameter of 7.2 mm so it would look close to a 1.5 ct stone!

http://www.whiteflash.com/loose-diamonds/round-cut-loose-diamond-3034512.htm ($11,356)

In addition, I would ask both of these jewelers if they can order the AJ setting. It is easiest to have the diamond seller have the stone set.

Just for reference, I picked up an AGS 0 cut, H, VS1 1.016 carat on Blue Nile recently for $7100. It's an absolutely stunning fireball, very very white and has near-perfect hearts and arrows.

$12K is crazy. Look around. You can easily find comparable or better stones for less.
