If you were thinking of getting a bezel band w/either rose or french cuts, which would you choose? I just pulled these off Singlestone for reference-they aren''t specifically ones I''m looking at. I''m just thinking down the road... The pictures are small and kinda hard to see the cuts on them.

Alternating Rose and OEC rounds.

French cuts are an older cut square stone, but not step cut. They are much more like the oldest faceted diamonds with very small tables and high crowns. One entire cubic crystal per stone. They can be very attractive and are generally set in channel when small. Most of them are cut in relatively small sizes, under .10ct, most well under .05ct. Maybe someone still cuts a few of them today, but most come out of old items. Items set with French cuts command a very nice premium when found in excellent condition because of rarity and demand.

Rose cuts are flat bottomed slivers with only cown facets. While many are old, many are still be manufactured today. They have little to no internal reflection and tend to be subtle and watery in appearance. Many are bezel set, some are backed up with foil, or lampblack. Some of the modern ones are left open backed. You''ll find lots of rose cuts in Moghul jewelry styles common to India. Rose cuts were commonly used in Victorian jewelry on occasion. Some recent designers continue to use rose cuts with great effect.

I prefer French cuts for their brilliancy and consistant matching. I like rose cuts in modern, casual pieces.

Here''s a picture of my rose cut band. It is alternating sapphires and diamonds bezel set in 18k brushed yellow gold. I bought it from Jewels by Erica Grace.

French cuts for me

It''s really a matter of individual preference. Both give very different looks, so it''s just what appeals to your eye more.

I prefer French cuts myself.

I prefer French Cuts!

i have two eternity bands of french cuts set in platinum: one is all white diamonds and the other is 3/3 rubies and diamonds. they sparkle like crazy in a more subtle way that modern brilliant cut stones. (rose cuts dont do much for me-i like them mixed with pearls or colored stones for earrings and other types of jewelry)

Thanks for the replies!

Upgradable, thanks for the picture of your ring-it''s very pretty!
bgray, do you have pictures of your french cut bands on here?

I suppose when the time comes, I''ll need to visit and play with both styles and see which calls to me most! I''ve never actually seen either cut in person, just browsing here and on SS.

Maybe french cut band, and then do rose cut earrings! (thanks for the idea bgray hehe) Or a couple little rose cut stones in my kids birthstones in little stacker rings or something.

If you hear any crying and sobbing, it''s my bank account begging me to get off here and go watch tv so I quit coming up with new ideas for pretties.

I also like rose cuts in modern designs. Utilized well, they have a great look. Rose cuts don''s always have to be round either. This style features pear shaped rose cuts surrounded in a pave paisley. The rose cuts help to give this pendant necklace a much bigger look than .39ctw would suggest. Rose cuts are a great specialty cut, and really do have a unique charm.

I''d do French cuts in the ring too for maximum sparkle.

Thanks Diamond Explorer (that pendant is so pretty!) and Chrono! I think I''ll look into french cuts for my future wband, so long as they don''t break my bank and will look good w/the ering I get..and do rose cuts for another piece! Would Singlestone be the best place to contact when I''m ready?

That''s who I''d go to first. Ari is very easy to work with!

Thanks Uppy! I sent him an email. I don''t like asking vendors about things that aren''t in the cards for like-a year-but it''s nice to have a ballpark idea of price so I know if it will work or not...and dang but it''s fun to look and think of ideas!

And I like tradergirl''s suggestion the best. But she and I have very similar taste in jewelry, so that doesn''t surprise me!!

Important point Dave...
Some confuse French Cuts with "Carre" (step cut square)...
French Cuts are unique in the square cut family and are actually mixed cuts (although GIA ID''s them as "Square Modified Brilliants").

I am trying to attach a close up....

I found a few alternating french and oec and they''re really pretty-is alternating oec/rose cut an unusual combination? I wonder if alternating french/rose cut would look ok...maybe they''re too different and it would look funny.

That''s interesting DiaGem-thank you! Love the diamonds in the picture too!

I happen to own an antique French Cut diamond ring that was my Grandmothers.

While I would not sell that ring for 1 million dollars, because of sentimental reasons, I do know it has virtually
no fire because the bottom part of the diamond is like it is sliced right off and flat as a pancake.

Can you look at both side by side? Or is this strictly an internet purchase?

I am curious to know what you decide.

I completely agree on David Atlas assesment of these beautiful diamonds.

Having one antique rose cut I can attest that it truly does make it a very casual ring.

It doesnt sound like a FC..., you sure the Diamond was identified as FC?

Usually those cuts run pretty deep..., both on the pavilion and crown side of the girdle plane...

I am attaching another profile version: (this on has a stepped pavilion and the crown corner facets are made of one single facet as opposed to the line on top which has split crown corner facets..., just two versions which exist Historically).

Sugar-I thought rose cuts were the flat ones on the bottom? I''ve never seen either in person, so when I''m ready down the road to actually get something, I''ll check w/the local jewelers to see if they have anything to try on and get a feel for what I am drawn to. If none of the locals have anything, then..well, I dunno, haha! I''m sure when I''m ready Singlestone will help me figure something out. I see I have email from them now so I gotta go check it out!

I am intrigued with French Cuts too, but I don''t use any in my designs yet. But, you better believe if I found a good source, I would use them.
