I recently did a RHR on nearly your budget - WF .52 I SI1 ACA for ~$1,000 and a halo setting from LOGR won at auction for $150, and I'll bet your g/f's friends will never have any idea that you didn't spend a fortune on hers! It can absolutely be done, and your results are gorgeous!
