Ring Design Opinions

Hello,

I've made a few 3D renderings of the ring I'm getting made for my GF. In this album http://imgur.com/a/DcJe6, the first 2 are actual settings that I modelled mine after, the third image is the dimensions of the stone I bought, and the rest are images of the setting I'm going to have made.

The criteria for my design was a thick setting, princess cut solitaire, white gold.

I'd like to hear any opinions (positive and negative), advice, or tips for comissioning custom work.

Thanks!

just some thoughts and observations:

with a princess, the corners are the most vulnerable to chipping. in your design, it looks like that has been taken care of.

i think the pics of what are the inspiration ring (the first 2 pictures), the metal shoulders look rounder. it isnt as sharp/ pointed compared to your design. The shoulder area being the interface between the diamond and the metal, also from the top edge of the shoulder to the ring. So, it may or may not be an issue with it catching on clothing etc.

Width of the shoulder- not sure if that should be the same width as the diamond or wider.....if the shoulders are wider than the diamond as with the 2nd picture of the insipration ring, it makes the ring look 'softer' easier to my eye. but that may also be a cause for catching on clothing... hmmm...

thickness of the shoulders - they look good. nice and proportionate.

height of the diamond.. i prefer the setting in the original 2 pictures- the girdle of the princess being lower than the shoulders of the ring. the table of the princess at the same height of the shoulder of the ring. to me it is easier to my eye, i guess more aesthetic to me.

sorry, i may not be helping.

have fun with the process..

Hi Barrus,

I read your other thread and congrats on finding out her ring size.

I have looked at your CAD rendering and let me put it this way, it is not an ordinary design, as in a round diamond sitting in a solitaire setting. You want to totally surprise her and blow her off her feet, right? Do you know if she will like this design? Remember she is going to wear it, not you, and you and she want to show it off to her family and friends and get that "wow" from everyone.

After all your hard work it would be unfortunate to give her a ring she was not gaga over.

I surprised my wife to some extent, we looked at engagement rings for fun and I knew rather quickly what she liked and disliked. Hey this worked for me, may not work for you. Best of luck.

I think its masculine. I also think the diamond is set too high.

If she likes the masculine look, I'd only fix the height of the diamond, as it looks like the inspiration pic, ams if thats what she gave you then you're right on track. :wavey:

Hi. I agree with your other comments. My concern is that this is a very different style of ring and it won't appeal to everyone. If you know this is what her taste is, awesome. If she hasn't shown you styles like this, this ring is a gamble. It's very modern and maybe a touch masculine, which can be a good thing - please don't think I'm being negative. I had a 1 ct princess set in a very wide platinum band, but it had prongs rather than a tension setting, and I loved it. I know you've put a ton of work into this project, so I'm assuming you feel comfortable with the questions I've raised ;)) As an aside, what style of wedding band do you envision?

did she say she wanted that kind of a setting?

I'm a little worried that with this design the band will be the star instead of the diamond. It seems that the band width will be 5mm which will allow very little/no room for a wedding band, depending on her finger size. I would recommend that you taper the band from wider at the top to narrower at the bottom and also round the edges. I think this would help with aesthetics (more feminine) and comfort quite a bit. The overall look will still be similar but more comfy. I have a RHR with those sharp edges and it actually hurts to wear after a while.

She's been out with a friend to a large engagement ring store in town (Spence). This was her favorite because of the wide setting and square stone. As you can see the band she liked is plain as well (although I think a band with pave stones all around would look nice too)

Here is a pic of her hand with the 3 ct behemoth she liked (http://imgur.com/a/TjJk9). This one was way too much for my budget. She also liked other styles becasue they remained thick all around.

So yes, the design is based on her preferences, but with a smaller stone (0.75 ct). She bought a ring the other day which is just plain silver about 5-6mm wide, and basically looks like a man's wedding band...and said she loved it because it was solid, thick, and simple (maybe just like her man?).

I also know that she doesnt care for halos, cathedrals, multi-stones, or prongs.

WOW! Then I think you nailed it!

Very insightful, thankyou. I agree that the table should (and will) be fluch with the setting...again, my beginner skills at rendering come through.

Point taken about the width of the setting v diamond. Might make the stone more secure as well.

Did the same thing, she always came back to a style like this (no prongs). Good looking out ;)

Thanks for your helpful (as always) input. Se my previous post with her hand in it and the style she chose of hundreds. I've confirmed this style on a casual mall walk-by with her.

Also, for anyone else, I believe it's more of a semi-bezel, rather than a tension setting (the ring is closed beneath the stone).

You're very close with your design but have a good look at the pic of her hand and you can see that the band tapers from wider at the top to narrower. This makes it much more comfortable to wear. Good luck and she's very lucky that you want to get her exactly what she prefers!!

I knew you couldn't possibly be shooting in the dark. You're too detail oriented for that. Given the photo you posted and what sounds like her taste, I think she's going to love what you've designed. Thanks for the correction - I didn't notice that it was a semi-bezel, which I think is a better choice than a tension. Who is doing the setting for you?

I would do two thing besides lowering the diamond.

Smooth out the whole thing. Make it more rounded at the corners and on the band.

Taper it. That makes it more comfortable and feminine

It would look more like the insperstion that way, too

I'll find out on Saturday. Local guy I'm sure, I have an appointment with the guy who sold me the stone who in turn outsources custom work to a short list of jewelers. Im Canadian, BTW.

Kuddos to you - you definitely know what your girlfriend wants in her engagement ring! Whether it's someone else's taste or not, that doesn't matter...that's what SHE wants and it looks like that's what she's getting! :appl:

I'm sure it will turn out beautiful!
