Ah! I thought the setting looked familiar. I even commented in your original thread.
Thanks for adding the additional information. Ah... to wear a Doug Menadue / Joe Escobar ring. Quality shows

Yes, indeed! I struggled for a while on how much $ to allocate towards the stone vs. the setting. I have since realized that I need every piece to be perfect, which means spending for the quality setting as well :wink2:

Wow! Kama your ring is spectacular
I love all the details and the underneath looks great too.

You make a very good point about the setting, I've been wondering how much one has to spend to do the stone justice and that really makes sense to me...unfortunately...So I'm looking at even more saving up time now!

It's a gorgeous ring and must be wonderful to wear.

lovedog's choice...
Doug Menadue cut these high crown Tangier cut natural blue topazes. Will Lovedogs choose left or right...
What would you do?

That's what I've decided :) I just couldn't decide and loved them both. Plus the exchange rate is heavily on my side right now and Doug gave me a great deal. Whoops!!! :twirl:

You did it!!! Congrats with your beautiful new stones. This design is irresistable. Any ideas on how you will set them?

I have a few ideas :) I love these choices:

1) Airline halo + bezel: lovely_milgrain.jpg

2) Something of a combo between this CVB ID and this DK design 11109810_359383527601595_1928987991764793833_n.jpg
10485142_903060209776784_6540093772505980868_n.jpg

3) Or something like this bezel + curved diamond design. 11011989_350429215163693_6414637138030572770_n.jpg s-l1600.jpg

Gorgeous design ideas lovedogs!!! :wavey:
Will you make one into a pendant and the other into a ring or will you have 2 rings created for you?
Who will make the setting for you?
In any case, you cannot go wrong with these design ideas.

Great thread! I am bumping so I remember to come back here for inspiration. I have an asscher from Doug from quite a while ago . . . a year or two . . . I have lost all track of time. No idea how to set or who to have set it!

Acinom - Hi, Do you love your ring? It's VERY pretty. Would you make any changes? Did you want french cut sides initially? I'm a CS newbie and need help!!

Hi Loves Vintage :wavey:
What kind of Asscher do you have from Doug? Do you have a photo?
I indeed initially wanted tapered french cuts or tapered carres to add some width to the sides. My OEC is also in a french cut setting though and I was not sure whether it would look odd to have a similar setting on both hands... I am really happy with the current setting: jeweller David Klass did magic with the depth of the stone. He made the ring look very balanced. I love the combo of the step cut with the single cut pave in the shank. A straight shank with french cuts would be lovely as well, but my Paraiba is already set like that

Thanks for your reply, Acinom. I will have to go through your other thread, which I just noticed. I never venture into this section. It's prolific! I really like your style, so I bet I will find something in there, though I do very much like how you've set your asscher.

From his email it's Natural Blue Topaz, O'Briens Creek, 8x8x7mm, 3.4 ct. I found a photo from Doug's email. I hope it's ok to post it here. I haven't taken any photos of it myself. I got it in 2013. Time to set it, right?!?! I should take some of my own photos too!

Your stone is amazing!!! Welcome to the natural blue topaz club!! I cannot believe you could resist setting your beautiful stone. Time to set indeed. I can really recommend working with David Klass: high quality for a very reasonable price.

Looking forward to see how you will set yours. Pleasssse make a lot of pics pf your stone as soon as you can 8-) 8-)

My two stones came from Doug! Sadly I was out of town when they arrived, and now it's too late to take pics, but I promise some tomorrow. They are gorgeous! So glad I decided to buy both!

As promised: I'm back with TONS of pics! I just can't stop staring at these stones--the cut is incredible and Doug did an excellent job as usual. They are like colorless pools--so much depth and such an amazing cut on both.

Ooooh! Both stones are stunning to the max
What a fabulous cut! And I love the dewdrop blue colour.

Best decision ever to buy both. Any setting ideas yet now that you have seen the stones in real life?

Acinom: I'm fairly sold on this style (below) likely done by DK so it can have lots of engraving :)

That Tangier cut looks fantastic (and kinda makes me want one)!
I love your ring inspiration and I agree that engraving would really take it up a notch.

Lovedogs & Sparkliesluver: you might have started a trend with the Tangier cut.

lovedogs: I love the design you have in mind for one of the Tangiers. It will be amazing with engraving.
sparkliesluver: how are your setting plans progressing for your Tangier natural blue topaz?

It's truly a spectacular cut, Acinom! It really is.

It's actually paused for now. I'll probably resume sometime next year. I'm currently working on two ring designs and realized those need my full attention.

Bahahahaha, elle. :D One is my Burmese red spinel ring and the other is my Jeff White red-pink spinel. The former has a thread, but my stupid self didn't realize certain things applied/didn't apply to sketches, so I really shouldn't have posted anything. The CADs for that are approved, so I'll be sure to post the finished ring (and the CADs) when I hear from David. And the latter ring is still in the sketch phase, but I recently had a huge change of direction on the design so I'm investigating that right now.

Wanted to resurrect this thread since I'm hoping to have the larger of my two tangier stones set in the next month or so. Trying to decide on a setting--I moved a little bit away from the DK design I posted before since I'm trying to be more cost effective :)

I have a few potential options from MDZ and another one that's quite different. Anyone have preferences for one in particular? I can't decide, and think they are each very pretty in their own way!

1.

s-l500-1.jpg
s-l500.jpg

2.

s-l500-3.jpg
s-l500-2.jpg

3. Ignore the stone in there now, but this was the best way to show the setting for a stone this size

s-l500-4.jpg
s-l500-5.jpg

4. The entirely different one. I'd ask the vendor to not use a split shank w. diamonds (either a single shank or double is fine without diamonds--I'd prefer engraving)
