just wondering if a diamond that has been certified in the past by GIA, gets updated later on again by GIA, would the diamond ever come back with higher grades? I personally think not possible, more likely to come back with lower grades

anyone please?

If they know there is a prior report, and are just renewing it, I believe the color and cut would stay the same. The clarity could differ if, say, in the intervening time, a chip occurred or something.

If GIA thinks it is a fresh analysis (i.e., no report number inscribed on the girdle), it could differ if it was on the borderline for color or clarity. I think cut would be the same, as those are calculated by number (although are averaged).

Why do you think you wish to resubmit it ? Why do you fear it could be downgraded?

Stones are graded by humans, therefore there is a possibility a stone may come back a different grade if it is 'on the border' between grades.

anyone please?

OoohShiny...you are right I am sorry! and kinda realised that when I sent that message
:silenced: thanks or the border tip

ringo865 a diamond I am looking to buy had a GIA report five years old, I asked for it to be renewed as I wanted to ensure there had been no damage since then

I believe clarity will either be the same or worse...

Others believe that the colour may be graded higher, which I find very strange as the same lab is being used. I just suppose I wanted to know if they are trying to get my hopes up for nothing;)2:D

There has been some discussion around whether clarity grading has been getting 'softer' in recent years (so a historical SI1 would get a VS2 now, for example) but it would seem impossible to verify whether or not this is the case.

A re-grade is a good idea on an older stone if you are buying secondhand or 'New Old Stock' - it means you can check whether it is in good condition.

re: the forum thing, I think of it like a fridge in a communal kitchen - stick a post-it note on it with a question and someone may reply to it with another post-it note when they are passing the fridge, but you have no idea how long it will take or who will reply :)

haha yeah throwback to uni days!

thank you anyway for the help , I am just going to hope it comes back the same!

Please do let us know how it goes - one example does not make a comprehensive case, of course, but it is interesting and adds to the knowledge base :)

Having re-submitted dozens of stones over the years:
Our experience is that the vast majority come back with the same grade.
Variables include
* how old the original report is...... it's more common to find a grade change on a 20 year old report
* the grade of the stone. "Regular" diamonds are less likely to see a grade change as compared to some fancy colored diamonds.....but even then, GIA is fairly consistent.

Definitely come back and tell us how the new cert compares to the old!
