I did hear a story that someone bought his fiancé a fake diamond and lied about it. I would really think twice if this is the case. Get a tester or go to a jeweler and end the questioning.

My SIL rocked a CZ for years. Had NO idea.
Sooo,Did she divorced him when she found out about it?...

That would be a giant YES. But, he was a jackass. That was only ONE of the things he lied about.

OP, If it IS fake, we have no way of knowing if he was swindled or tried to pass it off. That is your call. But you have the direction you need. Go see a jeweler. It is quick and simple. As far as the diamond goes.

For the love of Pete people. It takes a decent experienced jeweler a minute to determine if a diamond is real or not. Seriously. Put down the sandpaper. Walk away from the mirrors.

And if you have a new ring, you need to insure it. And for that you need a good INDEPENDENT appraisal anyway.

So go up to the the Resources tab, go to appraisers, find one, call for an appointment and get it all done in one stroke.

This.

If it IS real, you need to get in insured pronto.

So inquiring minds want to know...Real or fake?

I can fully understand an honest fellow wanting the best for his intended and going with the fakey. (don't want to break the rules here...)
Let's face it, diamonds are expensive, and there's a lot of pressure to present a beautiful (large) ring for an engagement.
A lot of men wouldn't have the time, imagination, knowledge or interest to even go near a coloured stone ring...

My man wouldn't spend more than $600 on my original e-ring... not everyone is born with the proverbial silver spoon from birth...it takes time to get established.
I wouldn't hold it against the man, in and of itself - context is everything heheh

There's nothing at all wrong with an imitation stone, or no ring at all for that matter. This stuff is completely unnecessary. The problem is in how it's represented. The bride can say whatever she wants to the world but if the groom is lying to the bride, that's a problem. If the merchant lied to the groom, that's a different problem. Both would be severe.

Well! Its REAL! I took it in, and had it appraised (for insurance purposes). Thank you all for your thoughts and suggestions.
I keep hearing diamonds shouldn't have color sparkle, and they should be more grey/white within the stone...which is where this confusion started from!
Thanks again!

Whew! :appl:

Alexis thanks for posting back! A lot of people post, but then don't follow back up and leave us "hanging". Thanks for clearing it up.

Diamonds do have dispersion, the colorful sparkles you see, more than many stones out there (I can think of sapphire, quartz, beryl just off my head). However the diamond simulants CZ and moissiante have more dispersion than diamonds. It is difficult to judge whether a particular stone has "too much" color play, because it depends on the cutting of the diamond and also the type of lighting available. Probably the most favorite quality I like about diamonds is their dispersion or "fire"

YAAAAAAYYYYY!!!! ...I was wondering how this turned out -- happy and relieved for you, OP! :D

phew!

I thought diamonds were supposed to throw out colors? In direct sunlight, mine looks like rainbow brite threw up on it.

I'm glad you got it sorted out. Yes, diamonds do have colored light dispersion (fire, as it was pointed out). It's unfortunate that someone actually believes a diamond should look grey or dirty. A badly cut one certainly will (and a lot of the ones available in mall stores surely will not be all that well cut) so I can see how that conclusion keeps hanging on in the world.

Also, a diamond cut that was popular some decades ago had more white light return (brightness) than fire but had a larger diameter for weight (spread). You traded the better spread and lost some fire and got more white light, but that doesn't exactly sound like what the person who told you diamonds should be grey was saying....It sounds like they were used to seeing not so well cut ones. Or maybe they are confused? Diamonds will often darken in sunshine to silvery grey or darker. Your brain basically can't process all the information it is receiving from the diamond (in terms of light) so it reads as darker. I think it's called cancellation.

Congrats on your engagement! It sounds like your FI did a good job!

here's an entire thread on PS devoted to colored light return pictures (fire). Feel free to add some!

Goes both ways.

Thank goodness it turned out okay! The boyfriend has proved himself to an audience of millions, and the OP has proof of his love.
 I love a happy ending!! :)

What a great outcome - I'm so happy for you that it is REAL and not fake. Did your FI know of all your worry? did you share w him that you were concerned? How did he react when he found out is was legit and you were all relieved? Just curious.... :twirl:

The diamond is real the OP is fake. :Up_to_something:
