I recently got engaged, so naturally I think what if its FAKE? Did my man get ripped off!?
The internet is all over the place, one site says this, then the other says that.....Needless to say, it confused me even more......
Any experts out there that can help explain the difference between REAL or FAKE diamonds?!
Thank you!

Go see a jeweler on your lunch hour and ask them to test the stone. Problem solved.

Yep, this.

Yes any jeweler has diamond tester. But it is sad to think you are unsure of something that your fiance gave you

Did you ask him if the stone has a grading certificate? If you two talked at all in advance about getting engaged, it would have been good to set some parameters at the outset...like GIA excellent cut, etc.

This isn't a very scientific, but you can try the "fog test"...

Put the stone in front of your mouth and fog it (breathe hot air on it) like you would a mirror. If it stays fogged for a couple seconds, it’s probably a fake. A real diamond disperses the heat instantaneously so by the time you look at it, it has already cleared up, or if it happens to be a little dirty, it still clears much faster than a fake.

If you can, try this with a stone you know is real next to the suspect stone and fog both. You can watch how the real one stays clear while the fake one fogs over, plus if you breathe on them repeatedly, you will see condensation start to build up on the fake, it fogs more with with each puff, while the real one is still clean and clear.

The best way to know for sure is to take it to a jeweler. :))

Scratch on the mirror is sure sign its real. I(the mirror is scratched not the stone lol)

OMG PLEASE do not do this! You could damage your diamond. Just take it to a jeweler....

It was humor...........................................................................but hardest mineral in the world should damage the mirror and not your stone lol

It's pretty easy to tell real diamonds vs. fake and most jewelry stores are happy to do it for free and while you wait. A bit more difficult is to decide the grade and the value but that too is pretty straightforward and there are appraisers all over the country who can do this for a reasonable price. there's a list at the top of the page under the 'resources' tab.

All fakes used in the past 40 years or so will also scratch a mirror. This is a worthless test that will damage your mirrors. If you find an antique fake in good condition by all means don't ruin it--they are worth a bit to collectors.

The fog test is real but there are a ton of other factors like the weather. You really need a known diamond and a known fake for comparison. And the amount of difference varies depending on what sort of fake you have, so it's really only meaningful if you already know what sort of fake you have.

As said, any jeweler has a gadget that will tell you in 10 seconds.

Ok good! I can just imagine someone that doesn't know better doing it!

Any jeweler will tell you people ruin their counters all the time! :naughty:

My jeweler told me to take sandpaper to the diamond. If it has scratches on it after being rubbed with sandpaper, it's not real.

That's because they make sandpaper from sapphires!

But Moissanite is harder than sapphire so it's not a great test either.

I agree to take to jeweler; however, if you have a good magnifying glass look at the stone under bright light. Diamonds have inclusions - and a CZ really won't.

If it was my fiance... I'd ask for the paper work to review for "insurance purposes". That should help (look for GIA or AGS). If he says he doesn't have any or some under the table "deal", don't make him feel bad but head straight to the jeweler to test if it's real.

I can't believe anyone would test their diamond by scraping it against a mirror or sandpaper! What do they think sandpaper would do to the prongs! Buy, geez, why not just ask a jeweler?

For the love of Pete people. It takes a decent experienced jeweler a minute to determine if a diamond is real or not. Seriously. Put down the sandpaper. Walk away from the mirrors.

And if you have a new ring, you need to insure it. And for that you need a good INDEPENDENT appraisal anyway.

So go up to the the Resources tab, go to appraisers, find one, call for an appointment and get it all done in one stroke.

 I was trying to imagine how I would explain to DF how I managed to damage my ring. 'Um sorry, I suspected that you bought me a fake !'

I know that we already determined that the mirror recommendation was only meant in fun, but I always hear this recommended outside of PS. Anything harder than glass will scratch glass, and I believe (?) that most diamond simulants these days are made of materials harder than glass, so this isn't an effective test anyway.

I also didn't know that sandpaper was made with sapphires. Hmm! Interesting! :))

lol just saw gypsy's post!

I know all these post including mine are all in fun...but Real or Fake really is concerned that her stone might not be real. So back to the original suggestion. Just stop in any reliable jeweler and they will have a diamond tester.

f it is real then do have it appraised for insurance purposes. If it is not real consider the love you have for your fiance and your financial situation and then decide how you want to deal with it.

I have my fingers crossed that it is real but either way it was given to you as a symbol of his love so does it really matter :twirl:

I think this person is long gone haha. Not one reply

Thank you all for the replies!!
As a few of you mentioned, I asked my fiance if the ring came with any paper work...he said NO, so this is what got me a little nervous. I don't see any inclusions in the stone, but there is a scuff on the edge of the diamond, it seems way too "colorful" .
I told him I want to have it insured, but nothing has come of that yet, he shrugs it off....I know going to the local jeweler is the BEST way to go, I guess I'm scared if YES its fake, and my fiance had no idea? :? Would be horrible coming home and telling him that news.

He bought a diamond with no paperwork at all? I would still go to a jeweler adn have it tested to make sure it was real. If it passed that test I would then go to an indepdant appraiser to make up paperwork for it.

And FYI you dont' NEED your husband/fiance to insure the ring. You can take care of that yourself.

I can understand how you feel, but you really should go to a jeweler and find out for sure, for your peace of mind and to move forward if it's not a diamond. I have a feeling you're ok, but you seem very worried so I would have it checked out asap.

I did hear a story that someone bought his fiancé a fake diamond and lied about it. I would really think twice if this is the case. Get a tester or go to a jeweler and end the questioning.

My SIL rocked a CZ for years. Had NO idea.

Or are you afraid that it is fake and he had every idea...
