Radiant Cut thoughts?

I agree with Charmy unfortnately, this video is fairly useless for judging color since it appears to be taken in a yellow room, which will limit the real color differences: http://vimeo.com/35035324

Do you think she would be happy with a tinted diamond? I have owned Gs and Js in RBs and the color diffeence is noticable. In a radiant it would likely be quite noticable, especially the tint in the J since the cut shows more body color.

But since she wants a larger diamond, how about this: Buy the J and have it sent to you loose or in an inexpensive mount. If *you* like it, then propose with it and tell her you can easily exchange for a slightly smaller less tinted rock. The risk is that she will like it and want a less tinted larger rock ;))

But me, I would get the G knowing it is a killer diamond, probably nicer than anything she imagined or has seen before.

HI:

My thoughts? As a radiant owner--and understand they have a propensity to hold their color--if color is an "issue" for you, get the "most" colorless stone within your budget.

cheers--Sharon

Dreamer -- we didnt talk about color, just that she wanted 2.0 ct or better and a radiant or rectangular shape (like the emerald). I couldnt bring it in me to spend that much money on Emerald so I convinced her after looking locally that radiants were much better.

I havent seen a J in person yet, but I feel like the photo say a lot right now.

well both the diamonds in the video are square! if she wants an emerald cut that has very different optics than the ones that you are looking at. I don't think an emerald cut will be more $$ than the branded radiant cuts in the video. GOG doesn't have a lot listed on their website but they have brought in ECs and made videos before.

Mike you know there is an emerald cut *diamond*, right? She likely wanted a diamond not an actualy "emerald" stone. If that is what she wants, for god's sake don't convince her to get a radiant!! That is like saying you want chocolate ice cream and your BF convincing you that you should get strawberry!

I think that a J colored radiant will show a tint- if your GF is particularly color sensitive you may want to stick with higher colors.

slg/dreamer- yep I've seen the emerald diamonds and dislike them totally

I hear you both, I should have said when we looked at them I "pursuaded her to look at radiants and other square/rectangular shapes" -- she ultimately changed her mind and said she wanted radiant, so I was also happy.

Anywho -- back to my delimia. The folks at GOG are cool, they also mentioned that if she doenst like it even after a year we could get something differnt as long as its $1 more (and they would apply the price I paid today). I just dont see her doing that. Once I give it to her doubtful she'll ever trade it in for better. (more like I'll end up being asked to buy better ;) )

One question I didnt ask. Regarding value -- since I notice that others are comment that "special shape" or "non round" diamonds are getting harder to cut since they seem harder to find the ones to produce high quality --- would it be safer to say the better color (G) would hold value better ?

I;m look at all the advise and really thinking that all this is really leading me G, since

1. It really isnt that much more in terms of size 1.8 - 2.3
2. J definitly shows the yellow
3. Apparently in lager size diamonds the J shows more
4. Last but not least, the POH is more brilliant

I agree with your points 1-4. For resale, I think a G color is better because it is more desirable, and also because it is better cut IMO. But never buy diamonds at retail for resale or investlemt, right? They don't hold value, diamonds are a little like cars. Drive it off the lot and it depreciated by about 50%.

Only get the second setting if you plan on her replacing it. You can get an Ingwer, just not that one.

What size is her finger, what is your setting budget? I'd put it in a Mark Morrell with split prongs.

Any reason why you recommend against Ingwer? Her ring is like 6.5

I really wanted a 4 prong. GOG highly recommended the Vatche, they said the customer service is great. They also said it would look great in both settings.

I havent seen the Mark Morrell

I think Julie may be alluding to the fact that the Ingwer setting appears to be very high. I very much prefer a lower-profile setting because it keeps me from banging my diamond around on walls, doors, tables, etc.

Sorry, I wasn't clear. I don't like the prongs that just stick straight out, it is very utilitarian looking. The prongs look like a V, basically. It can be made to look good with a large diamond set low, but since they are found on budget settings, it just doesn't seem to fit with a more expensive diamond. on the whole, I like something a little more stylized, but I think the Vatche prongs are not refined enough. Here's Mark's page: http://mwmjewelry.com/ GOG works with him.

I like the 1530, for some reason i just feel like the catherdral tapering higher is a more secure setting for a square or rectangular stone that has more potential for chipping- but i think that might just be me.
